The minimental stage examination is a screening test for several different

cognitive functions :

Orientation of person, time,and place establishes full awareness of self

and the environment. Further testing requires the patient to be alert.
Registration and recall tests immediated and recent memory
respectively. Remote memory many be tested by asking about memories
of childhood, work, or amrriage. These need corroboration with family or
friends to be certain the details are correct. Verbal memory can be tested
by asking the patient to remember a sentence or short story and to recall
it 15 minutes later. Visual memory can be assessed b asking the petient
to memorize three object on a table and recall them after 15 minutes.
Attention and calculation can be tested by asking the patient to spell a
five-letter word backwards and to subtract 7 from 100 continue to subtrac
7 from each answer obtauned; if the letter is too complex for the patients
premorbid calculation skill, simple arithmetic can be used.
Language examination tests comprehensionn of speech and written
language and includes tests for dysphasia, dyslexia and dysgraphia.
