DISTRIBUSI TEGANGAN DI
SEKITAR TEROWONGAN - 6
6-1

Selain pendinginan, perubahan mineralogi

batuan.

g = 10 m/detik2, tegangan in situ vertikal pada elemen 2700 t/m2 atau 27 MPa.
6-15

6-34
tegangan dibebaskan total.
The method for the measuring the stress in the rock was first described by Habib
and Marchand (197x). This procedure was effected by first mounting two vibratingwire strain gages on a rock surface, orienting them to measure in the line of
intended stress determination & then making an initial strain reading.
A slot of sufficient area to partially relieve the strain in the proximity of the strain
gages is then cut between the strain gages, and a flatjack grouted into the slot.
After the grout has cured, the flatjack is pressurized to a value such that the strain
gages indicate their initial value. The flatjack pressure is considered equal to
stress normal to the plane of the flatjack that existed in the rock before the
slot was cut hence no elastic properties of the rock mass is required.
Panek and Stock (19xx) modified this procedure by replacing the surface mounted
strain gages with copper-foil jacketed resistance strain gages (Valory type)
grounted in slots cut above & below the intended flatjack slot.
The gages are placed directly over and under the center of the flatjack & oriented
so that they will measure the strain in the direction normal to the flatjack. Panek
found that this modification improved both the sensitivity and accuracy of the
stress determinations.
In a later modification the resistance strain gages were replaced by small hydraulic
cells grouted in similarly placed drill holes. It was found that stability of the
6-35
hydraulic cells is excellent, that is, their zero drift is virtually nil.
6-37
Metode Overcoring-1
Strain recovery by stress relief through overcoring is accomplished by a variety
of procedures. All ground is compressed due to the stress acting on it. When a
piece of rock is drilled out of the surrounding material (overcored), it expands due
to elasticity. If the elastic strain recovery is measured, and the elastic properties
of the overcored material are determined, then the stresses which were acting on
the overcored material can be calculated according to Hookes Law.
Overcoring is the easiest method to use and provides the most complete results.
To measure the elastic strain recovery during relaxation of the rock, the
instrumentation has to be very sensitive because the deformations during elastic
strain recovery are very small. Considering that the elastic modulus is in the
vicinity of 70 GPa, the equipment has to be capable of determining deformations
Metode Overcoring-2
Early developments in overcoring instrumentation were the US Bureau of Mines
deformation meter and the South African doorstopper. In the case of the US
Bureau of Mines meter an EX drill hole (38 mm) is overcored with a nominally
153 mm diameter coring bit (Panex 1965, Hooker et al. 1974).
The expansion of the EX hole is determined with an instrument which contains
one or more strain gauged cantilevers connected to the EX borehole wall with
the aid of protruding buttons. The US Bureau of Mines meter has a sensitivity of
one micro-inch/inch across the diameter and a temperature sensitivity of only 2
micro-inches per inch per degree Fahrenheit. The system works well in adverse
6-40
The doorstopper system uses strain gauges as a transducer. An IBX hole (59.5 mm) is
drilled to the required depth and the bottom is ground flat (Figure 1.4). Onto this flat drill
hole bottom, the so called doorstopper is glued and the resistance of the gauges is read
before overcoring commences. Overcoring is carried out with an IBX 750 thin wall coring
bit yielding a 44 mm core. The sensitivity of the gauges on the doorstopper is 5-10
microinches per inch and the gluing process can be difficult if moisture is present. Recent
development of glues which tolerate moisture in rock have eliminated this advantage. The
doorstopper system uses a rather small drill hole and the borehole geometry for testing is
simple. Installations have been successful to a depth of about 60 metres (Leeman 1969).
Both the USBM meter and the doorstopper measure strain recovery in one plane only, that
means the full ground stress tensor can only be obtained by drilling three holes in
independent directions of each other.
To remedy this limitation, a triaxial strain cell method has been developed in South Africa.
Its borehole geometry is similar to that of the USBM meter, but three strain rosettes, each
carrying four strain gauges, are glued to the inside of an EX drill hole as shown in Figure
1.5 (Leeman 1969). This triaxial strain cell is overcored, and the overcoring provides
sufficient readings of strain recovery in the required directions so that a stress tensor can
be determined. Achieving a thorough bonding of strain gauges to the bore hole wall is
absolutely essential and the quality of the bond must be checked after a completed stress
determination test (Gray et al. 1969, Herget 1973b).
6-41
A more recent development in this line of instrumentation has been the Australian triaxial strain cell which
is a far more rugged but also a more expensive triaxial strain cell. The South African strain cell carries 12
strain gauges while the Australian unit carries 9. Both types of instrumentation provide enough redundancy
in strain readings to carry out a calculation of the stress tensor according to the method of least squares.
Thus a result of best fit and a measure of reliability is obtained (Worotnicki 1976).
The standard South African methods do not permit recording of strain recovery during overcoring but rely
on readings taken before and after overcoring. However, modifications allow readings to be taken during
overcoring similar to the USBM meter and the Australian triaxial strain cell system. This requires more
effort during installation, but procedures more detailed results.
6-42
Doorstopper
The "Doorstopper" method is based on the strain relief at the flattened bottom of the
borehole (BX-60 mm or NX-76 mm in diameter). A strain rosette at the bottom of the strain
cell, resembling the shape of a household hardware doorstopper, is cemented to the end
of the borehole. The measurements of baseline strains ex, ez, & gxz are recorded. Then,
the borehole is extended to leave the strain cell attached on top of the rock stub released
from the surrounding stresses. Thus, the changes in strains, Dex, Dez, & Dgxz, can be
related to the in situ stresses for a given configuration at the end of the borehole if the
material properties of the rock is known.

This equipment has an impressive track record for successful stress measurement by
overcoring in weak rock conditions. It can also be used for stress change monitoring if
installed and left in-situ. RMT can also provide suitable software, adhesive pack sundries,
installation and readout equipment and bi-axial cells for determination of elastic properties
during stress measurement.
6-47
6-48
Care has to be exercised when carrying out ground stress determinations. The location should
preferably be dry and remote from mining operations. The rocks should be sound because
broken or heavily fractured rocks are not suitable for elastic strain recovery. Also, environmental
conditions should be bearable, otherwise the frequency of mistakes will increase.
Sites should be selected on the basis of geological information, so that results which are
obtained at the stress determination site can be extrapolated to other areas of the mine.
Generally, errors of less than 10% can be achieved for the stress tensor but one should be aware
that the results will represent only an estimate of the existing ground stresses.
The quality or reliability of strain recovery measurements depends primarily on the complete
transmission of deformation from the rock to the strain gauges. It is therefore essential, for the
methods using strain gauges bonded to a borehole wall, to check the bond for each overcored
strain gauge. This can be done by subjecting the overcored sample to compression in a testing
machine or a portable hydraulic loading device
6-49
Hydraulic Fracturing
In the case of hydraulic fracturing a section of a drill hole is sealed off and hydraulic
fluid is injected into the sealed off section under such a pressure that finally the
borehole wall develops a crack. The magnitude and direction of the principal stresses
may then be determined by the strength properties of the rock, the orientation of the
crack, the fluid pressure at the time of crack development and the pressure to
maintain crack growth.
Hydraulic fracturing is presently the only method which allows the determination of
ground stress levels in deep drill holes. The method originated in the oil industry from
oil well simulation methods.
The equipment comprises bore hole tools to set packers, a flow pump, injection fluids
and borehole inspection units to determine orientation of cracks in the pressurized
section. Demand and size of equipment increase with the diameter and depth of the
boreholes which are being tested. A schematic layout is provided in Figure 1.9a.
A borehole subjected to fluid pressure will develop an extension fracture if the tensile
stresses developed by the fluid pressure (p) exceed the external stresses on the
borehole wall and the tensile strength (To) of the material (Jaeger 1963).
6-50
Hydraulic Fracturing
If To is zero, as in the case of an old fracture intersecting the drill hole wall which is held
closed by the normal stress acting on it, the fracture will open when:
p > s (fracture)
If the fracture is horizontal:
p = sv = gravity stress gradient x depth
For a vertical hole in continuous ground with the principal stresses oriented vertical and
horizontal, fracture development may occur in horizontal direction if:
p > sv + To
(1.6)
or in vertical direction if:
p > st (tangential stress) + To
If horizontal stress components are s1 & s2, then, ignoring pore-pressure in the rock:
st = (s1 + s2 p) 2 (s1 - s2) cos 2
(1.7)
st max = 3 s1 - s2 p at = p
(1.8)
st min = 3 s2 - s1 p at = 0
(1.9)
Tensile failure is possible when:
p > 3s2 + To - s1
(1.10)
6-51
Hydraulic Fracturing
This occurs in the plane radial from the borehole in the
direction of s1 at the point of fracture the required fluid
pressure equals to:
p = 3s2 + To - s1
or
-s1 = p 3s2 - To
For a case of:
s1 = sH max = 4000 psi
Hydraulic Fracturing
The orientation of the cracks can be obtained by an impression packer or borehole viewing
devices. A pressure diagram is given in Figure Hydraulic Fracture Arrangement which
shows the breakdown pressure (p) (Bredehoft et al. 1976). Fracture development is very
quick and if the fracture has propagated beyond the immediate vicinity of the borehole, the
work required the fracture process is small, because of high stress concentrations at the
crack tip. This shows up in the Figure as a number of closely spaced pressure peaks. This
stress level is called the instantaneous shut-in pressure ISIP and it is this pressure which
is required to keep the fracture open and growing. This is approximately equal to the
normal stress acting on the fracture. In the above example ISIP = s2.
Theoretical and laboratory studies have shown that in the case of rubber packers, the
initial hydrofracture in a vertical drill hole is always vertical and perpendicular to the least
horizontal stress irrespective of the magnitude of sv. In case sv is the minimum principal
compressive stress, the vertical crack at the hole boundary will change direction towards
horizontal as the crack propagation away from the local stress field imposed by the
pressurized drill hole (Haimson 1978).the results is that shut-in pressure (psvert & pshor)
may be recorded.
6-53
Hydraulic Fracturing
In the case of a vertical crack with the propagation towards
horizontal, the stress field is defined as follows:
p
= 3s2 + To - s1

Shut-in Pressure (Ps) adalah tekanan penutupan rekahan yang diperlukan agar rekahan tetap
terbuka tanpa menambah rekahan.

Near-field stress. The natural stress state within the vicinity of, and perturbed by, a
heterogeneity (usually caused by engineering activities, e.g. a tunnel as a low-modulus
inclusion).
Far-field stress. The stress state that exists in the region beyond the near-field, where
no significant perturbation due to the heterogeneity occurs.
