PETA LOKASI
Fisiografi Regional
Berdasarkan geomorfologinya fisiografi daerah Buton dibagi menjadi tiga
bagian, yaitu :
pantai barat, batuan sedimennya berarah timur laut.
Banyak
pembentukan Buru, Seram, Banggai-Sula, dan Timor (Audley-Charles et al., 1972;
Price, 1976; Hamilton, 1979; Pilgram dan Panggabean, 1984; Gerrard et al., 1988;

fasies tadi.
Semua analisis mengindikasikan sedimen-sedimen Formasi Winto berumur
Trias tengah sampai akhir (Hetzel, 1963 ; Smith, 1983 ; dan De Smet, 1991). Saai
Diendapkan
pada lingkungan neritik luar sampai open marine. Struktur sedimen minim, dan
kandungan fosil pada karbonat nya mengindikasikan proses pengendapan suspensi
pada lingkungan laut dengan air yang tenang. Ketebalan minimum formasi ini
diestimasikan sekitar 500 meter. Berdasarkan analisis biostratigrafi Formasi ini
diperkirakan berumur Jura bawah (Bothe, 1928 ; Hetzel, 1936; Gulf Oil Company,
1972; dan Nolan et al, 1989).
Formasi Rumu
Ketebalan maksimum diperkirakan 400 meter.
Formasi Rumu terdiri atas tiga fasies yang berbeda ; pink calcilutites yang
terdiri atas red cherts, pale gray sampai brick red mangan siliceous mudstones yang
terdiri atas belemite, dan skeletal/pelletal wackstones. Smith (1983) mengemukakan
Dominasi litologi umumnya masif sampai berlapis tipis, warna putih sampai
orange, rekristalisasi mudstones, dan wackstones terdiri atas fosil planktonik
bentonik lokal dan radiolaria. Presentase chert berlapis abu-abu gelap sampai hitam
tinggi, rekahan atau fracture, dan nodul-nodul. Asal dari chert ini terkait dengan
dissolusi diatom, radiolaria, dan spikula sponge.
Batugamping Formasi Tobelo diendapkan pada open marine, lingkungan
yang kaya oksigen, neritik luar sampai bathial atas. Umur formasi ini berkisar antara
Kapur awal (Berriasian) sampai Oligosen.
calcisphere inoceramid prism limestone, radiolarian planktic foraminifera limestones,
poorly bedded, pelagic Cretaceous member, dan well laminated Eosen sampai
ofiolit Buton sebelah barat.

four-way dip closure. Pada daerah offshore, struktur utamanya adalah wrench-
related anticline.
Klastika kasar
Formasi Tondo adalah reservoar objektif yang utama.
Wrench-related anticline melingkupi daerah Selat Buton dan sebagian besar
bagian barat Pulau Buton (Gambar 6). Strukturnya berupa tight asymetric folds,
interbedded pinacle reefs.
Perangkap stratigrafinya yaitu reefal buildup berumur Pliosen / Pleistosen dan
endapan kipas berumur Pliosen. Perangkap ini melingkupi daerah offshore antara
Pulau Buton, Muna, dan Sulawesi. Data seismik tambahan diperlukan untuk
mengetahui potensi play ini.
VI1.1 Introduction
Buton island is located in Eastern Indonesia region, off the Southeast coast of Sulawesi (Figure
1). Stratigraphy and structural style of the islands are distinctly different from S.E. Sulawesi and
Muna Island. However, broad similarities are recognized between Buton and adjacent islands in
the BandaArea, specifically Timor, Seram, and Buru. Buton Island is on the western margin of
the Banda Sea in the Province of South East Sulawesi, Indonesia. The island is approximately
155 kilometres long and between 15 and 60 kilometres wide.
origin situated in or adjacent to Eastern Sulawesi (Figure 2). The Sula-Buton Province is
bounded to the West by the Western Sulawesi Volcanic Arc province and metamorphic-
Ophiolitic material. The imbricated sequences consist of ophiolite, metamorphic rocks and
sediments of Australian affinity which range as young as Upper Oligocene, are grouped
together as the Wolio Complex (Smith, 1983). These are overlain by syn to post orogenic
The lower part of the pre-Neogene sequence contains of clastic detritus, showing its affinity
with continental margin of Australia. Towards the upper part of the clastics are gradually
replaced by deep-water carbonates. Stratigraphic correlation with other islands along the
Sorong Fault Zone (i.e. Buru and Seram) indicate that Buton and other two islands are rifted
and drifted from the continental margin of Australia/Papua New Guinea which collided with
Sulawesi Plate during The Early Miocene. This collision is marked by ophiolite obduction onto
the Buton micro-plate and development of linear (NE-SW) sedimentary basins between thrust
culminations.
At least three main sedimentary basins can be recognized in this area: Bulu Lisamale Basin
lies in the southern part of the Buton Island, Lambale Basin locates in the northern part of the
Buton Island, and Buton Strait Basin. These basins range in age from Early to Late Miocene
and contain thick sedimentary sequences deposited in an essentially deep marine turbidite
environment. The sediments are derived from thrusted and deformed pre-Neogene and
ophiolite sequences. Deformation proceeded through the Neogene firstly as a thrusting and
associated folds, which involved pre-Neogene sequence, and later followed by block faulting
associated strike-slip deformation. Strike-slip faults were interpreted active during deposition
of Upper Tondo and Sampolakosa Formation. Pleistocene regional uplift in this region was
accommodated by block faulting resulted in the formation of Wapulaka limestone terraces.

Buton is the island of Muna, which consists of predominantly marine sediments (Pliocene to
Pre-Neogene rocks floor the Neogene basins in both South and North Buton. The pre
In general, the pre-Neogene rocks in this region compose of Triassic Winto, Jurassic Ogena,
Late Jurassic Rumu, and Late Cretaceous to Oligocene Tobelo Formations. The Winto
Formation in North Buton comprises of limestones, whereas rocks in south Buton contain a
mixture of clastic, shales and carbonate rocks.
Stratigraphically, the Winto Formation is overlain by the Jurassic Ogena Formation. The
minimum thickness of this rock unit is about 500 m in south of Buton, and is estimated
approximately 1,000 m in North Buton. The Ogena Formation consists of well-bedded
limestones (calcilutite) and thin shale intercalations. In the North Buton Area, the limestones
contain small amounts of chert.
In the South of Buton, the Late Jurassic Rumu Formation is interpreted to conformably overlay
the Ogena Formation. The minimum thickness of the Rumu Formation is about 450 m. The
rock as its type locality consists of pink coloured calcilutite, with red chert bands and pale grey
mudstones containing belemnites and dolomites.
Neogene Stratigraphy South Buton Neogene Basin Two Neogene sedimentary basins are
recognized in South Buton, firstly The Buton Strait Basin and secondly the Bulu Basin in SE
Buton. The stratigraphy of the South Buton Neogene Basins is described below: Tondo Group
Trie Tondo Group broadly can be divided into three divisions, such as a coarse clastic facies, a
fine clastic facies, and a limestone facies.
Coarse Clastic Facies
The fine clastic facies is dominated by mudstones (fissile siltstones and claystone)
intercalated with thinly bedded, fine to coarse-grained sandstones. Sandstones usually
constitute less than 25% of the fine clastic units. This type of facies may present a sequence
of either inter-channel fan deposits or distal turbidites.
Limestone Facies
Two types of limestones are present in the Tondo Group of South Buton. These are:
- Massive limestones up to 200 m thick with occur on the east flanks of the Kapantoreh
Ophiolite. These limestones have been interpreted as shelf limestones and reveal
Middle to Late Miocene ages.
- Argillaceous limestones occur as occasional intercalation within the fine clastic facies.
This type facies consists of grey to buff coloured muddy limestones rich in coral
detritus.
Two types of depositional environments for the Tondo limestones are interpreted; firstly shelf
environment flanking the Kapantoreh High for the massive limestones, secondly a basinal
environment forthe argillaceous limestone interbeds in the clastic sequences. Overlying the
Tondo Group rocks of South Buton area are a series of grey to white coloured marl and
calcarenite, which reach a maximum thickness approximately 400 m of Early to Late Pliocene
of an outer shelf to bathyal sediments of the Sampolakosa Formation. The marls are often
bioturbated and contain occasional carbonate concretions.
North Buton Neogene Basin The
Lambale Basin
Similar to the South Bone Basin, Tertiary sediments of the Lambale Basin are composed of two
main rock units: Tondo Group, and Sampolakosa Formation.
Tondo Group
As in South Buton, the Tondo Group of the Lambale Basin can be subdivided into three
lithofacies; limestone facies and both a coarse and fine clastic facies.
Limestone facies
Unlike in the southern Buton Area, the limestone facies of the Lambale Basin consists of
dominantly massive, cream to buff coloured micrite Early-Middle Miocene limestones with
occasional conglomerate and breccia horizons intercalation, particularly in the upper part of the
sequence.
Coarse Clastic Facies
Tondo clastic rocks in the Lambale Basin are younger than the limestone facies and are
interpreted to overlie unconformable the limestone facies. The lithologies within the Tondo
coarse clastic facies are similar to those in South Buton. The rocks are mainly conglomerates
and medium to coarse grained, lithic sandstones. The overall thickness of the coarse clastic
facies is highly variable. The maximum thickness of this unit measured from cross-section is on
the order of 500 m at the basin margin.
Sampolakosa Formation
The Pliocene Sampolakosa Formation of the Lambale Basin crops out in the central part of the
basin. In this basin, the Sampolakosa is composed of massive/bedded, white coloured marl and
calcarenites in the upper part. The presence of calcarenite in the upper part ofthe Lambale Basin
succession may indicate of a shallow upwards sequence. Wapulaka Formation in the South and
North Buton
Buton indicates that uplift is very much less than in South Buton. Limestones terraces up to 700
m above sea level are present in South Butan whereas in North Buton limited in lateral extend
and terraces are rarely greater than 50 - 75 m above sea level.
Source Rock
The Triassic Winto Formation that was deposited under anoxic conditions during a marine
transgression contains the petroleum source rock for the Buton petroleum system. It contains
mostly marine shales with some fine-grained limestone with some calcareous shales and large
amounts of organic matter. The Winto Formation has been ascribed to be potential source
quality in the Buton Basin, whilst other formations of preTertiary age have poor organic content
and were suggested to have no source potential due to low organic quality.
VI1.3.2 Reservoir Rock
Primary target for reservoir plays are the Tondo Coarse Clastic Facies and karstic horizons at
the top of the Tobelo and Tondo Limestones.
Tondo Clastic
In general coarse clastic submarine fan facies of the Tondo Formation are almost entirely lithic
in composition, although some feldspatic lithic sandstones have been identified. Lithic
fragments are dominantly serpentinites derived from the Kapantoreh Ophiolite Complex with
lesser amounts of carbonate, chert and metamorphic fragments exist. Despite the presence of
ophiolitic fragments in many Tondo Clastic Units, a feature that may be expected to reduce
porosity, asphalt impregnation is widespread. Asphalt impregnations are widespread across
South Buton and around the margins of the Lambale Basin.
The total thickness of this unit varies between 90-140 m, with lateral variation in thickness of
individual sandstone and conglomerate are extremely variable. Individual
sandstone/conglomerate units range between 10 to 15 m thick (ERI, 1990). This unit has
porosity value range from 19-28 %. Surface weathering has been enhanced the porosity of the
Tondo Coarse Clastic Unit.
Palaeokarst
Two Palaeokarst reservoir horizons exist on Buton. These occur at the following stratigraphic
intervals: top of the deformed pre-Neogene sequence, and top of the Tondo Limestone Unit.
Pre-Neogene Limestone Karst
A palaeokarst horizon of the Tobelo Limestone (sub-unconformity trap) exists at the top of the
deformed pre-Neogene sequence and is overlain by the Tondo Group. In this type of reservoir,
Tondo clastics overlie the unconformity surface and infill cracks and fractures in the karsted
Tobelo limestone. The other possible potential karst reservoir may exist within the pre-Neogene
carbonate succession of Ogena and Tobelo Formations.
Tondo Limestone Karst
This type of palaeokarst play appears to be restricted to the North Buton. Although was not
observed in surface outcrops, this horizon appears as a strong reflector on seismic line
crossing the Lambale Basin. The development of the base Neogene palaeokarst can be
inferred to the pre-Neogene (Early Miocene?) major uplift event on Buton. In this type of
reservoir, karstification may lead to formation of fracture porosity at the top of the Tondo
limestone facies.
VI1.3.3 Seal Rock
Various seals potential exist in the Buton Basinal area, which include the fine clastic facies units
of the Tondo Group and marls and mudstone of the Sampolakosa Formation. Tondo fine clastic
facies unit that predominantly composes of claystones and siltstones separate stacked sand
and conglomerate units. In the Lambale Basin, mudstones and marls ofthe Tondo and
Sampolakosa Formations overlie Tondo coarse clastic horizons, which are interpreted to extend
across the Lambale Basin at depth. The lack of any oil and gas seeps and the restriction of
asphalt impregnations to the margins of the Lambale Basin is the strongest argument forgood
seal potential in the basin.
VI1.3.4 Migration
Migration of oil and gas through fault into reservoir within anticlinal traps in Neogene Basin is
envisaged. Migration of oil into Tondo Clastic rocks is interpreted to have been occurred at an
early stage of the diagenesis.
Faults are interpreted to be the principal migration pathways for hydrocarbons. The Winto
Formation source rocks have been structurally thickened and repeated by thrust faults.
Migration of hydrocarbons occurred initially along thrust faults to potential reservoirs and traps
An important consideration is the presence of deep-seated late strike-slip faults, which post
date thrusts and fold and have been active from Late Miocene to possible Recent. These
structures may breach potential hydrocarbon reservoirs and therefore present an alternative
pathwayforhydrocarbon migration.
VI1.3.5 Trapping Mechanism
Primary trap for hydrocarbon in the Buton Area are structural trap which include anticline and
The anticlinal trap involves Middle Miocene-Pliocene sediments (N14 and younger). The
anticlinal trap can be grouped as upright open fold structures that formed during the latest
tectonic event of the Plio-Pleistocene. The axis of the anticlinal structures trends NE-SW
direction. In the Lambale Basin, the anticlinal structures are generally small. The axis of the
in the Tondo clastic indicates potential for stratigraphic traps in this area. Possible combined
stratigraphic-structural trap may also exist in this area that is formed by folded intraformational
