PERTEMUAN KE 1
POKOK BAHASAN : REQUEST, PERMISSION AND OFFERS
A. TUJUAN PEMBELAJARAN
Adapun tujuan pembelajaran yang akan dicapai sebagai berikut :
1.1 Mahasiswa mampu memahami ungkapan request, permission and offers
1.2 Mahasiswa mampu menunjukan ungkapan request, permission and offers dalam
sebuah kalimat tertulis
1.3 Mahasiswa mampu menggunakan ungkapan request, permission and offers
sederhana secara lisan.
B. URAIAN MATERI
Tujuan pembelajaran 1.1
Request
Kalimat request biasanya diiringi kalimat permintaan/permohonan, bisa dibilang kalimat
perintah, namun terlihat lebih halus/sopan saat menggunakannya. Kalimat request
biasanya digunakan oleh orang yg lebih muda kepada orang yg lebih tua. Spesifikasinya,
kalimat request terdapat kata tolong (please) dan terdapat kata bantu “would, could dan
can”...
Example :
1. Could you help me to turn on the lamp, please?
2. Can you help me to open the window, please?
3. Would you like to order meatball for me, please?
4. Would you mind repairing my watch?
4. Can I have your pen?
5. Could I have a seat?
Permissions
Dalam percakapan sehari-hari, ada tata krama atau adab yang harus dijaga, agar orang
yang kita ajak bicara merasa nyaman dan senang. Seperti meminta izin jika ingin
meminjam sesuatu. minta izin jika akan berkunjung, dll. dalam Bahasa Inggris disebut
PERMISSION atau MINTA IZIN (BOLEHKAH?)
Example
 Can I ask you a question? (Bolehkah saya bertanya?)
 May I have a piece of cake? (Bolehkah saya makan kue ini?)
 Could I get you to turn off the lights? (Bisa padamkan lampunya?)
 Do you mind if I smoke?
 Would you mind if I asked you something?
 Is it okay if I sit here?
 Would it be all right if I borrowd your book ?

Offers
Expression of offering help atau ungkapan menawarkan bantuan untuk
membawakan sesuatu dibawah ini adalah contoh ungkapan penawaran bantuan
kepada seseorang yang umumnya akan ada jawaban juga dari penerima penawaran
apakah akan menerima atau menolak tawaran.
Example
 Could I offer you a glass of tea?
 Can I get you something to drink?
 Can I post this letter for you
 Shall I post this letter for you
 Would you like me to post this letter for you

TUJUAN PEMBELAJARAN 1.2

Match these questions from the conversation to their function.

TUJUAN PEMBELAJARAN 1.3

In the conversation below, two guests and friends are visiting at their house. Read the
conversation and answer question a), b), and c).
a) There are four speakers, A, B, C, D. Which ones lives at the house, and which ones are
visitors?
b) Does everyone know everyone else? How do you know?
c) A says,” shall I put these upstairs? What do you think these are?

A: Actually, I wonder if they’re in.

Oh, they are in.
B: They obviously are
C: Hello
A: Hello
C: Come in
B: I’m Mike
C: How are you
B: Fine
A: shall I just put these upstairs
C: well, yeah. Can you put them in our room, please?

C. LATIHAN SOAL/TUGAS
Decide if questions 1-5 are a request, asking permission or offers.
1. You don’t look so good. Shall I call a doctor for you?
2. Would you post this letters for me on your way to work?
3. Would you mind being a bit quieter, I got a headache?
4. Could I use your phone for a minute?
5. Can you pick up some milk for me when you go out?
6. Do you want to lay the table for me?
Making request, permission and offers based on the situations below.
• Someone is carrying heavy bag.
• You’re in a friend’s house. It’s hot.
• Your friend needs to go to the airport.
• You’re at the restaurant. You need salt.
• You need a new motorcycle.
• Your neighbor is playing loud music at late night.
• You need a day off work. Ask your boss for permission
