Pengalaman Menerbitkan Artikel di Jurnal Ilmiah
Awal-awal Publikasi Ilmiah:
• Selalu berusaha menulis sesuatu yang kelihatan besar, mewah, complicated,
susah (megalomania view).
• Menulis sesuatu yang sederhana, strong and systematic introduction,
original research.

10
Desk Rejection
• Thank you for your recent submission to Public Choice of "Does Money Matter for
Electability? Lessons Learned from the 2014 Legislative Election in Indonesia." I
have now had an opportunity to read through your paper. While your paper
addresses an interesting topic, I do not believe it is a candidate for publication in
Public Choice.
• Rather than hold your manuscript hostage to a long review process, I have
decided that I should return it to you immediately in case you want to send it to
another journal.

Those results are consistent with the bulk of the literature on proportional
representation. What's new about your findings is that these effects occur in
Indonesia. Your submission is therefore not a good fit for our journal and may
better suited for one specializing in Indonesian politics or perhaps a comparative
politics journal.

How to Write a Statistical Story
• A statistical story should contain material that is newsworthy:
catching the reader’s attention with a headline or image:
providing the story behind the numbers, interesting and
entertaining fashion.
• First and foremost, you need a story to tell. You should think in
terms of issues or themes, rather than a description of data.
• A story tells the reader briefly what you found and why it is
important to the reader. Focus on how the findings affect
people.
• If readers are able to relate the information to important events
in their life, your article becomes a lot more interesting.
29
Writing Technique
• Tittle and subheading tittle are important
• Language: keep it clear, concise and simple
• Simple language is at the heart of any successful communication.
• The old-adage “keep it short and simple” (KISS) is as true now as it has ever been.
• Avoiding passive sentence
• Some tips for clear writing:
• Use short sentences;
• Aim for one idea per sentence;
• Break up long sentences;
• Start each paragraph with the most important message;
• Keep paragraphs short;
• Keep your writing crisp.

Kenapa Kita Gagal Publikasi?
Apa yang reviewer inginkan?

“Bukan tentang cerita penelitian Anda, tetapi tentang

produksi pengetahuan untuk semua”

Pengalaman Review Paper-paper orang Indonesia
(Asia)
• Introduction: not straightforward, too humble (tidak menunjukkan
keunggulan (novelty) riset (atau memang tidak tahu?)), penjelasan
yang tidak efisien.
• Literature review: sangat kurang dan tidak sistematis disampaikan
(kadang menunjukkan ringkasan dibandingkan diskusi).
• Framework yang lemah (not systematic thinking).
33
Apa yang Reviewer Inginkan?
(Ingat Reviewer punya Pekerjaan Utama, Review adalah kerjaan Volunter)

• Eye catching Title: “I Just Run Two Million Regressions” “Good

Intention, Bad Outcome”.
• A good and strong abstract: 1-2 sentences introducing why this
research is conducted; 1-3 sentence describes data and methodology;
showing only interesting results.
• Strong and systematic Introduction:
• Straightforward in writing introduction
• Showing the position of article compare to others (previous research)
• Show the novelty of research and contribution (don’t be humble)
• Showing the big picture of addressed issue: literature review,
descriptive statistics.

34
Apa yang Reviewer Inginkan? Lanjut...
• Clear Methodology: why this methodology is used, what is
the advantage and disadvantage compared to other methods;
not need to show technical methodology (if this is not
originally developed).
• Analysis of Results: don’t explain all
econometric/quantitative results (for example; F-stat, R-
square, coefficient), showing what is the rational behind of
findings .
• Conclusion : showing only the interesting and important
findings related to research question (don’t summarize).

What Should Be
Done:
- Change the mindset
NO - Be Passion
- Hardworking
for Publication - Trying, Trying,
