ABSTRACT
Pb and Cd are heavy metals that are widely used in laboratory activities. The
increasing use of Pb and Cd causes water pollution if the levels exceed the
established quality standards. To reduce the waste from the laboratory that
produces Pb and Cd can be done by means of phytoremediation techniques. This
study was conducted to determine the efficiency of absorption of heavy metals Pb
and Cd by water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) with different concentrations and
contact times. This study uses a laboratory-scale experimental method with a
descriptive-quantitative research approach. Variations in the concentration of
water hyacinth plants used in this study were 100%, 50%, 25% with 15 plants in
each reactor. To determine the level of efficiency produced in this study, the
analysis of heavy metals Pb and Cd was carried out using an Atomic Absorption
Spectrophotometer (AAS). Based on the results of the study, water hyacinth was
effective in reducing the levels of heavy metals Pb and Cd. In this study, reactor A
had Pb and Cd removal efficiency of 79.25% and 39.32%, respectively.
Meanwhile, reactor B has the efficiency of heavy metal removal of Pb and Cd of
60% and 30.8%, respectively. And the reactor C has a heavy metal removal
efficiency of Pb and Cd of 28% and 32.9%, respectively. The results of this study
indicate a decrease in the levels of heavy metals Pb and Cd with various
treatments of waste concentration and contact time.
