The increased need for animal protein increases the need for quail eggs.
Quails have ease of maintenance, but some problems often hit, namely that
production is not directly proportional to the level of need. Inefficient feeding
management will increase production costs, so innovation is needed to improve
feed quality, including adding feed additives. The addition of additives to this
study used probiotics because they can improve the digestive system so that it is
more efficient in the use of feed and can increase the digestibility of the feed.
Probiotics that can be used as additives are Lactobacillus acidophilus and
Lactococcus lactis.
Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria produce lactic acid, which results in a
decrease in pH in the digestive tract. Decreasing the pH to an acidic level will
interfere with the metabolism of pathogenic bacteria so that they cannot grow and
make the absorption by the intestinal wall increases. Lactococcus lactis bacteria
are known to produce bacteriocins with nisin products. This bacteria can rapidly
produce lactic acid and has greater proteolytic activity than other lactic acid
bacteria.
This study aims to determine the effect of adding a combination of lactic acid
bacteria probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactococcus lactis) on the
production performance (feed consumption, QDP, and FCR) of Japanese quails to
reduce production costs and increase profits in the quail farming business. This
type of research was experimental research using Completely Randomized Design
(CRD). This study used 120 11-week-old Coturnix coturnix-japonica quails that
were randomized into four treatments and six tests, each containing five quails.
This research was carried out for 35 days, one weeks of adaptation, and 28 days of
treatment. Treatment included of a probiotic combination of lactic acid bacteria
(Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactococcus lactis) with various doses of 0
ml/liter of drinking water, 1 ml/liter of drinking water, 2 ml/liter of drinking water
and 3 ml/liter of drinking water.Feed consumption was calculated through the
amount of feed given minus the remaining feed; egg production was calculated
through QDP in %; FCR was calculated from the amount of feed consumption
divided by production results; and business analysis was conducted through
contribution margin (CM). The obtained data were then analyzed statistically
using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), which, if real different results were
obtained (p<0.05), was followed by the Duncan multiple range test.
The results showed that the addition of a combination of lactic acid
bacteria probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus dan Lactococcus lactis) could
reduce feed consumption, increase the QDP value, and reduce the FCR value of
laying quails to reduce production costs, in addition to an increase in the value of

the contribution margin so that profits can be realized in the laying quail farming
business. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended to laying quail
farmers that they give lactic acid bacteria probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus
dan Lactococcus lactis) in as much as 3 ml per liter of drinking water to increase
income and profits by reducing feed production costs and maximizing the
production of laying quail farms.
