 Introduction
Secara umum, manajemen merupakan
suatu seni dalam ilmu dan pengorganisasian
seperti menyusun perencanaan, membangun
organisasi dan pengorganisasiannya,
pergerakan, serta pengendalian atau
pengawasan.
Sejarah Ilmu Manajemen
Ilmu manajemen telah ada sejak ribuan tahun yang lalu.

Bukti : Adanya piramida di Mesir.

Piramida tersebut dibangun oleh lebih dari 100.000 orang selama 20 tahun.
Pembangunan piramida ini tak mungkin terlaksana tanpa adanya seseorang yang
merencanakan, mengorganisasikan dan menggerakan para pekerja, dan
mengontrol pembangunannya.

Selama tahun 1400-an di kota Venesia, Italia, yang ketika itu menjadi pusat
perekonomian dan perdagangan di sana. Penduduk Venesia mengembangkan
bentuk awal perusahaan bisnis dan melakukan banyak kegiatan yang lazim terjadi
di organisasi modern saat ini.
Cth: Orang Venesia memiliki sistem penyimpanan dan pergudangan untuk
memantau isinya, manajemen sumber daya manusia untuk mengelola angkatan
kerja, dan sistem akuntansi untuk melacak pendapatan dan biaya.
Sejarah Ilmu Manajemen
Sebelum abad ke-20, terjadi dua peristiwa penting dalam ilmu manajemen.

Terjadi pada tahun 1776 ketika Adam Smith menerbitkan sebuah doktrin ekonomi
klasik, The Wealth of Nation.
Dalam bukunya itu, ia mengemukakan keunggulan ekonomis yang akan diperoleh
organisasi dari pembagian kerja (division of labor) yaitu perincian pekerjaan ke
dalam tugas-tugas yang spesifik dan berulang.

Revolusi industri di Inggris. Revolusi Industri menandai dimulainya penggunaan
mesin, menggantikan tenaga manusia, yang berakibat pada pindahnya kegiatan
produksi dari rumah-rumah menuju tempat khusus yang disebut pabrik.
Perpindahan ini mengakibatkan manajer-manajer ketika itu membutuhkan teori yang
dapat membantu mereka meramalkan permintaan, memastikan cukupnya persediaan
bahan baku, memberikan tugas kepada bawahan, mengarahkan kegiatan sehari-hari,
dan lain-lain, sehingga ilmu manajamen mulai dikembangkan oleh para ahli.
Ilmu- ilmu manajemen yang dikembangkan oleh para ahli pada saat Revolusi Industri, yaitu:
★ Henry Fayol seorang industriawan Perancis pada awal abad ke-20 mengajukan gagasan
lima fungsi utama manajemen: merancang, mengorganisasi, memerintah, mengkoordinasi,
dan mengendalikan.
Gagasan Fayol itu kemudian mulai digunakan sebagai kerangka kerja buku ajar ilmu
manajemen pada pertengahan tahun 1950 dan terus berlangsung hingga sekarang.
★ Max Weber seorang ahli sosiologi Jerman menggambarkan suatu tipe ideal organisasi
yang disebut sebagai birokrasi bentuk organisasi yang dicirikan oleh pembagian kerja,
hierarki yang didefinisikan dengan jelas, peraturan dan ketetapan yang rinci, dan sejumlah
hubungan yang impersonal.
★ Patrick Blackett pada tahun 1940-an melahirkan ilmu riset operasi yang merupakan
kombinasi dari teori statistika dengan teori mikroekonomi. Dikenal dengan “Sains
Manajemen”.
★ Peter F. Drucker sering disebut sebagai Bapak Ilmu Manajemen pada tahun 1946
menerbitkan salah satu buku paling awal tentang manajemen terapan: “Konsep Korporasi”
(Concept of the Corporation). Buku ini muncul atas ide Alfred Sloan (chairman dari
General Motors) yang menugaskan penelitian tentang organisasi.
Aliran Ilmu Manajemen
Aliran ini muncul untuk memecahkan persoalan yang dihadapi organisasi melalui
penelitian operasional (operational research-OR).

Permasalahan-permasalahan bisnis dipecahkan dengan teknologi dan strategi dengan

menerapkan OR. Metode OR dilakukan melalui langkah-langkah yang digali secara
sistematis yang diawali dari mengidentifikasi dan merumuskan masalah yang dihadapi
organisasi hingga memperoleh kesimpulan sebagai pemecahan masalah.

Para manajer memecahkan persoalan yang dihadapi perusahaannya secara kuantitatif.

Aliran ini disebut sebagai aliran ilmu manajemen yang dipelopori oleh Robert McNamara
(1950-an). Metode OR biasanya diterapkan oleh para manajer berkaitan dengan kegiatan
produksi seperti peramalan (forecasting), penjadwalan produksi (production schedulling),
program linear dan nonlinear (linear and non-linear program), pengembangan produk
(product development), dan analisis titik impas (break event point).
Namun aliran ini juga memiliki kelemahan karena kurang memberi perhatian kepada
hubungan manusia. Oleh karena itu sangat cocok untuk bidang perencanaan dan
pengendalian, tetapi tidak dapat menjawab masalah-masalah sosial individu seperti
motivasi, organisasi dan kepegawaian. Konsep dari aliran ini sebenarnya sukar
dipahami oleh para manajer karena dapat menyangkut kuantitatif sehingga para
manajer itu merasa jauh dan tidak terlibat dengan penggunaan teknik-teknik ilmu
manajemen yang sangat ilmiah dan kompleks.
Paham Ilmu Manajemen

Paham ilmu manajemen dalam teorinya melakukan pendekatan kontemporer untuk

manajemen yang berfokus pada penggunaan teknik kuantitatif yang ketat untuk
membantu manajer memanfaatkan sumber daya organisasi secara maksimal untuk
menghasilkan barang dan jasa. Dalam teori ini, manajemen dikolaborasikan dengan
ilmu matematika dan statistika.

Oleh karena itu teori ilmu manajemen menggunakan banyak pendekatan berbasis
matematika atau kuantitatif. Pada dasarnya, teori ini adalah perpanjangan
kontemporer dari manajemen ilmiah, yang dikembangkan oleh Taylor. Teori ini juga
mengambil pendekatan kuantitatif untuk mengukur campuran tugas pekerja untuk
meningkatkan efisiensi.
Teori ilmu manajemen memiliki banyak cabang yang masing-masing dari cabang
teori ini membahas masalah-masalah tertentu. Cabang-cabang dalam teori ilmu
manajemen adalah sebagai berikut:

Manajemen kuantitatif

Menggunakan teknik matematika seperti pemrograman linier dan nonlinier,

pemodelan, simulasi, teori antrian, dan teori chaos untuk membantu manajer
memutuskan berapa banyak persediaan yang akan disimpan pada waktu yang
berbeda dalam setahun, di mana menemukan pabrik baru, dan cara terbaik untuk
menginvestasikan modal keuangan organisasi.

Manajemen operasi

Memberikan para manajer serangkaian teknik yang dapat mereka gunakan untuk
menganalisis aspek apa pun dari sistem produksi organisasi untuk meningkatkan
efisiensi.
Total quality management (TQM)

Fokus pada analisis aktivitas input, konversi, dan output organisasi untuk
meningkatkan kualitas produk.

Sistem informasi manajemen

Membantu para manajer merancang sistem informasi yang menyediakan informasi

tentang peristiwa yang terjadi di dalam organisasi serta dalam lingkungan eksternal-
informasi yang sangat penting untuk pengambilan keputusan yang efektif.
