History Of
Sekolah Kebangsaan Lutong (English Version)
This school was built in 1957 and school started in 1958. It was built on a triangular
piece of land which is about 1 hectare. It is situated 1km from Lutong. Initially this
school was built for children of employees of Sarawak Shell Oilfields Limited. Later
it was handed over to and managed by the Miri Municipal Council. The switch to
Bahasa Malaysia as a medium of instruction was done in 1971. In 1973, the school
became a government school. In 1982, it was a Grade B school but by 1986 it had
become a Grade A school due to influx of people coming to work for the oil and gas
companies in Miri. A new block was built and officially opened by Datuk Hj.
Sulaiman B. Hj. Daud in 1983 while he was the Minister of Education. In 1988,
it became a two-session school. In 2005 a Computer Lab was built. The school that
started with about 50 pupils has now grown to a school with 1056 pupils and a staff of
50 teachers.
Like many schools in the big towns in Malaysia, the staff and pupils of SK Lutong are
multi-racial. In 1983, there were only two West Malaysian teachers, a husband and
wife, teaching Pendidikan Islam in the school. Now there are ten West Malaysian
teachers teaching various subjects. This clearly shows the effort made by the
Kementerian Pendidikan to enhance national integration among the various races of
different states in Malaysia. We sometimes do get to sample Keropok Lekor when any
of our colleagues return from Semenanjung Malaysia after a semester break. Our
West Malaysian colleagues have also learnt to appreciate Umai and Ikan Tahai.
This school is well-known for excellence in Sports. The sports activities include
sailing and also golf. There is no proper field for these activities in the school. The
road in front of the school is used as a track for training our athletes. However, we are
lucky that the school is offered the use of the Piasau Boat Club facilities for the
sailing and the Miri Golf Club for golf.
Results in the UPSR are still not satisfactory yet. The weakest subject is English
Language. The pupils are shy to speak English both in class as well as outside. Efforts
have been made to encourage pupils to read more English story books in order to
improve their vocabulary, however the pupils prefer to read Bahasa Melayu story
books. Needless to say, with teaching of Mathematics and Science in English in Year
6, hopefully the result will improve this year.
One of the problems faced by teachers here is restlessness among the pupils. When
the school was built, the classrooms were to accommodate around 35 pupils per class,
but now we are squeezing in around 45 pupils. Some of the pupils have not attended
any Kindergarten classes prior to entering Primary One and so they lag behind. Out of
every four classes in each standard, one class is a KIA class.
A strategy that might help in overcoming this problem would be to have more English
teachers teaching fewer students in each class during English lessons. This would
allow the teacher to give more attention to every pupil. As was mentioned earlier, the
pupils who have not been to any kindergarten classes, would not have any background
in English. Their parents would probably be speaking in their mother tongue or the
local Malay dialect. Thus it would be very difficult for the child to learn English in a
meaningful way.
This year we are celebrating our Golden Jubilee. One of the programs laid out is the
Jogathon held in March to raise funds for the school. The school building will be
taken down to make way for new classrooms. The Golden Jubilee Dinner is also
planned. This will be a time for all who have taught or studied in this school to meet
and reminisce and to renew acquaintance.
The construction of the new classrooms will begin at the end of this year. Therefore
learning and teaching will take place amidst the sounds of construction and the
laughter of our pupils in our makeshift classrooms until 2010. And, in not so distant a
future, we hope to be able to enjoy the space and the comfort of a modern school just
like any other in the country.

Sejarah
Sekolah Kebangsaan Lutong (Versi Bahasa Malaysia)
minyak Sarawak Shell Berhad. Kemudian ia diserahkan dan diuruskan oleh Majlis
Perbandaran Miri. Bahasa Malaysia dijadikan sebagai bahasa pengantar telah
dilakukan pada tahun 1971. Pada tahun 1973, sekolah ini menjadi sebuah sekolah
kerajaan.
Sekarang terdapat sepuluh guru Malaysia Barat
mengajar pelbagai mata pelajaran.
Semenanjung Malaysia sebaik sahaja cuti semester berakhir.
meningkatkan perbendaharaan kata mereka. Walau bagaimanapun, murid-murid lebih
suka membaca buku-buku cerita Bahasa Melayu. Tidak perlu dikatakan, dengan
