SUMMARY REPORT
Badai magnet menimbulkan
anomali pengukuran medan magnet permukaan Bumi.

TINJAUAN PUSTAKA
11.1 MEDAN MAGNET BUMI
D=arcta{~)
rete:{~)
I= a
F=.JH +Z
intensitas medan magnet permukaan Bumi. Medan magnet utama ini mengalami perubahan
sangat lambat dengan skala waktu berorde tahunan.
Inti Bumi memiliki jari-jari sekitar 3480 km, yang mana ukurannya hampir sekitar
setengah jari-jari Bumi.
300.000 Siemen/m. Aliran fluida inti disepanjang garis medan didekati oleh kondisi frozen-in;
'-'
90 km), E (90- 150 km) and F ( >150 km). Arus ionosferik horisontal, seperti elektrojet aurora,
plasma gan rongga plasma (plasma bubbles).
seluruh sistem arus magnetosferik.

11.2 INTERNATIONAL GEOMAGNETIC REFERENCE FIELD {IGRF)

PeS sore hari

kemunculannya.
gelombang plasma permukaan (Warnecke, 1990; lysak and Lee, 1992), anomali magnetik lokal
Hubungan kuatan

ionosfer mengintensifikasi arus cincin hingga melebihi nilai ambang kuantifikasi indeks Dst
mekanisme transfer energi selama terjadinya persambungan garis medan magnet (magnetic
merging).

magnetosphere) selama berlangsungnya substorm magnetosfer.
Dst. (i) Fase awal (initial phase) badai magnet dapat berlangsung selama 5 menit hingga ode
.........
jam.
gelombang
magnetohidrodinamika
(ULF)
dan
12
menjalar
melewati
anisotropi
partikel
magnetosfer. (ii) Fase utama (main phase) berlangsung dalam rentang waktu setengah hingga
beberapa jam.
Substorm magnetosfer
bersumber dari dinamika magnetosfer. Selama berlansungnya substorm teramati pemunculan
gelombang ULF yang berkaitan peningkatan arus ionosferik yang memberikan tambahan
terhadap medan magnet Bumi. Seperti badai magnet, substorm magnetosfer juga dibagi
menjadi 3 fase yaitu (i) fase pertumbuhan, (ii) fase ekspansi dan (iii) fase pulih (Rostoker dkk.,
1980).
(Rostoker dkk., 1987; Baker dkk., 1997b). Proses driven mendisipasi energi secara global dan
"----'
kontinyu (Opgenoorth dan Pellinen, ICS-4 meeting, 1998). Sedangkan proses loading-unloading

Sedangkan perhitungan spektrum daya signal ULF digunakan metode FFT (Fast Fourier
Transform). Deteksi peak badai magnet digunakan metode fungsi spline kubik.
GNU Octave (open source).

BABV

sebutan hukum pangkat (power law).
at. dan Smirnova et. at. (liha [2], [3], dan [5]). Oleh karena itu dengan mempertimbangkan
23
Sekali lagi tujuan
penelitian ini antara lain, a). Menyelidiki keterkaitan kedua karakteristik fraktal sinyal ULF
I
serupa (similarity dimensionL analisis dimensi hitungan kotak (Box-counting dimension), relasi
hukum pangkat (power law relationships), fraksi gerakan-gerakan Brown (fractional Brown

pengamat medan magnet st3sioner, surveyor, maupun rekaman satelit.

semakin besar nilainya kearah barat laut. Sedangkan perbedaan skala grid mengakibatkan
Data magnetometer mengandung informasi gangguan berupa kemunculan signal ULF
me nit.

badai magnet sangat besar diberikan dalam LAMPIRAN A.

Request Data

ABSTRACT
Shock in the solar wind occurs when supersonic stream comes into subsonic stream. ln the interplanetary space the
particles speeds of solar wind are super-Alfvenic. When the solar stream reaches Earth 's magnetic field it will be decelerated.
Recently there are many satellites which have been launched to observe the parameters of solar wind such as speed, density,
temperature and interplanetary magnetic field. In this study we used the data of solar wind recorded by ACE (Advanced Satellite
Explorer) satellite to indentify type of shock in the solar wind. Understanding on the type of shock is very important to study the
effect of interaction between solar wind and Earth's magnetosfer. The shock in the solar wind is associated with the change of its
density and plasma pressure, temperature, velocity and interplanetary magnetic field. The changing of solar wind parameters if it
is combined with magnetohydrodynamic fundamental mode cause various shocks or discontinuity in the solar wind. In this paper
we derived the methods to identify shock or discontinuity in the solar wind. We also give two examples how two identify the
shock of solar wind.
Keywords: plasma, solar wind, discontinuity, shock wave

INTRODUCTION
One of important thing to for space weather is how the solar wind changes in the interplanetary
space. The changes of solar wind affect some important and interest effects to the Earth magnetosphere
as example the discontinuity/shock in the solar wind around Earth magnetosphere.
In this paper we will derive the methods to identizy and classifY the type of discontinuity in the solar
wind by using satellite observation in the interplanetary space. This paper will be organized as follow.
Section I give the brief introduction the content of this paper, section 2 present the theoretical
background and how to derive and clas~izy the type of discontinuity/shock, and Section 3 give the data
and example of shock and how to identify the type of shocks.

II.
THEORETiCAL BACKGROUND
Discontinuities and shock at interplanetary space depend on the condition of solar wind. Simply,
the discontinuities a"ld shock occur when the supersonic flow come into the subsonic flow. That means
that there must be changes in the density, temperature, magnetic field, etc. of the solar wind from
upstream to downstream side of the discontinuities. Solar wind is a hot plasma which can be considered
as magnetized fluid. Therefore, to describe them the conservation equations of mass, momentum and
energy in hydrodynamic tluid as well as the Maxwell equations that govern the electromagnetic law
should be satisfied.
For MHD, the conservation laws of mass, energy and momentum are given by (Kivelson and
Russel, 1995; Parks, 2004):

In the frame of plasma the plasma cancel out the electric field and the plasma should satisfY frozen-in
condition which is given by
E uxB

(6)
To describe the changing of plasma parameters across a discontinuity or shock we can defme parameter
to represent that changing as follows (Nishida, 1978):
[X]= Xu -Xct
Then, this equation is called as jump condition of variable X from upstream to downstream of the
discontinuity. Superscripts u and d represent the condition at upstream and downstream sides,
respectively.
The conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy in the jump condition, respectively are
given by:
[pun]= 0

The steady state condition of the Maxwell equation (4) in the term of jump equation can be written as
[EJ= E~ -
E: =0
(10)
[BJ=B~ -B~ =0
(II)
(Bnu, -B ,uJ=O
(12)
The subscripts e and n represent the tangential and normal components corresponding parameter,
respectively.
There are two possible solutions for equation (12), namely, U 0 =
0 and U 0
:f::.
0. First, we will
consider condition corresponding to u n = 0. This means that there is no plasma flow across the
surface of discontinuity. And, this continuity is designated as contact discontinuity or tangential
discontinuity. When the magnetic field parallel to the surface of discontinuity,
(Bn] = 0
(13)
By using (12), the momentum conservation law in equation (8) can be written as
[ p+~]=o
2Jlo
(14)
The equation (14) indicates that the total pressure of plasma across the surface is balance. This kind of
continuity is called as tangential discontinuity. In the tangential discontinuity, the other equations are
satisfied automatically.
Then we will consider another condition of solution where u n = 0, namely when B n :f::. 0 . This
means that there is magnetic field component across the surface of discontinuity. From equation (8-12)
we find
[B,] = 0
hence,
[BJ = o
(15)

[iit]=O
.H-'
[u] = o
hence,
(16)
[p] = 0
(17)
This equation describes the contact discontinuity. Therefore, this discontinuity represents a stable
plasma structure because the plasma at the upstream and downstream sides will migrate by diffusion
along the magnetic field line.
Second, consider the solution of equation ( 12) for u n =f. 0 . This is means that there is plasma flow
across discontinuity. In other word, the structure propagates through the medium. Therefore, this
solution represents a wave and then, this kind of discontinuity is called as shock wave. The mass,
momentum and energy conservations, respecti vely can be transformed into

(24)
which indicate internal energy. Meanwhile. from the conservation of magnetic flux and frozen-in
condition of plasma we can obtain
(25)
F < 1: > [B]+ < B > [uJ- Bn [u]
The tangential component of (25) is similar with (12) and its normal component is similar with (II)
which correspond to tangential and contact discontinuity, respectively.
From equations (18) to (20) and (25) we can find a mass flux equation as follow
2
<'t>2
Bn
<'t>F2 __
llo
n }
llo

(26)
llo
The solutions of this equation can be obtained corresponding to F = 0 and F =t= 0. The condition
F = 0 corresponds with the tangential and contact discontinuity. So, the wave shock corresponds
to F =f. 0 . Thus, the roots of (26)
F=+~

(27)
[un]=O
(28)
and hence,

This means that intermediate shock have no affect to the change of solar wind density. Propagation
velocity of the intermed iate shock to the medium is given by
- un
B
C
= V A ,n =
"\}!-LoP
(30)
Hence, the propagation velocity is perpendicular component of Alfven velocity to magnetic field.
Another solution of shock wave can be obtained when the last factor in (28) is zero, thus
F2 +

(3 1)

Because the right hand of (31) always positive we have two roots of the equation, namely:
p2 > _[p]

s
( 't]
and
p2 > p2

(32)

where FA indicates velocity of intermediate shock. The shock wave which corresponds to Fr is
designed as fast-shock and which corresponds to F5 which is known as slow-shock. Within the shock
front the kinetic energy of the bulk motion of the solar wind is dissipated and the entropy is increased.
Therefore jumps in pressure and density across me shock should satisfy
[p] > O:md [1:] < 0
(34)
From tangential component of equations (19) and (25) it follows that
Bt =
(35)
and hence
[B~J=2 < B ,
(36)
The sign of the denominator on the right-hand of equation (36) depends on the mode of the shock. For
fast shock it is positive due to (32) and we have
-2
[B,] > 0 ,
hence
[B ] > 0
(37)
which mean the strength of the magnetic field increases through a fast shock wave. For slow shock it
follows from (33) that

Figure I: Parameters of solar wind and total of interplanetary magnetic field recorded by ACE satellite
on 24 October, 2003.
First we will identifY the A shock. First panel shows there is an increasing of density of solar wind.
This increasing then we labeled it with (+). Second panel represents the bulk speed of solar wind.
Associated with the shock there speed of solar wind was increased. So, we can label it with (+). Third
panel show the proton temperature of solar wind and the temperature was increased associated with
shock. Then, we labeled it with (+). And, last panel shows there is an increasing of interplanetary
magnetic field and it is labeled with(+). Then, we will identifY the A shock as shown in the Figure 1.
The increasing of temperature at the downstream side of the shock means that the plasma pressure was
increased. Therefore, the pressure we can label it with(+). Also, the increasing of magnetic field and
plasma pressure mean that the total pressure of solar wind was increased. This means that the column 7
in the Table 1 can be labeled as(+). Hence, by using Table I, the shock A of the solar wind is called as
fast shock.
Concern to second shock that labeled with B, the first panel shows an increasing of density of solar
wind, then we label it with (+). The second panel shows that the speeds of solar wir.d increase. Then,
we label it with(+). The third panel shows an increasing of the temperature and then we label it with
(+).The last panel shows that the interplanetary magnetic field decrease and thus, we label it with().
Hence, the sixth column in the table I will be (+) because the temperature of solar wind was increased
in the downstream of the shock. The seventh column will be(+) and fifth column will be(-). Therefore
we can conclude that the shock that labeled with B is called as slow-shock.

ABSTRACT
Magnetic storm on October 2003 associated with solar flare which followed by CME (coronal mass ejection) date 28-29
Oktober 2003. Shock at the magnetopause that corresponds with the magnetic storms is called as storm sudden commencement
which indicates compression to the Eanh 's magnetosphere. The interaction between solar wind and Earth' s magnetic field
generated various hydromagnetic signal. The Pc3 magnetic pulsations is one of the hydromagnetic signal with period between I 0
- 45 seconds. This pulsation is believed tobe generated at the magnetopause and propagate through magnetosphere and
ionosphere, then can be obser ved by using ground-based magnetometer. Charactenstics of Pc3 magnetic pulsation have good
correlation with the speed of solar wind. In this paper we analyzed amplitude of Pc3 magnetic pulsations during magnetic storms
on 29-30 October, 2003. We also analyzed effect of shock in the solar wind to the amplitude of Pc3 magnetic pulsation. We used
the magnetometer data of Biak station, ACE and Dst index. To e>ract Pc3 magnetic pulsations we applied second order of
Butterworth filter and using Hamming windowing.

I. INTRODUCTION
Pc3 magnetic pulsation is a hydromagnetic wave that generated as consequence of interaction
between solar wind and magnetosphere. As well, this pulsation is a quasi-continuous pulsation with
period in the range between I 0-45 seconds. The pulsations are believed generated at the magnetopause
and then propagate through Earth' s magnetosphere and ionosphere and finally can be observed from
ground-based stations.
Magnetic storm on October, 2003 associated with very large flares which followed by CME (Coronal
Mass Ejectbn) that occurred before the storm. The CME ejected high energy particles with high
velocity and density. As an effect the interplanetary magnetic field can be modified by the solar wind
stream time by time. As a result it will increase the occurrence probability of the magnetic storm
become higher.
The main of this study is how to detect the magnetic storm by using ULF wave which can be
rer, orded single ground based magnetometer in Indonesia that located at low-latitude geomagnetic
coordinates_ Therefore, first we need to analyze and investigate the relationship between the Pc3
magnetic pulsation and solar wind parameter during the large magnetic storm_ In this study we will
analyze the Pc3 magnetic pulsation during the magnetic storm on 29-30 October, 2003.

Pc3 magnetic pulsations extracted from magnetic field variation which recorded by ground-based
magnetometer at BIK (Biak). The location of BIK station in the geomagnetic coordinates is (-1 .088,
136.05E) or L = 1.05. The magnetometer records data with t!me resolut!on 1-second and have high
sensitivity. Extraction of Pc3 magnetic pulsations are performed by using second order of Butterworth
filter with applying Hamming windowing (Musafar, L. M., 2009). In this paper we analyzed the Pc3
magnetic pulsation during th'! magnetic storms. The Pc3 magnetic pulsation extracted every range 20
minutes. We also analyzed the relation between speed of solar wind and Pc3 magnetic pulsation. We
used the data of solar wind speed that recorded by ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer).

Figure 3. Time evolution of speed of solar wind (upper panel) and amplitude of Pc3 magnetic

This gives first evidence that Pc3 magnetic pulsations can be used to study about evolution of magnetic
storm, as well to study of effects the shock wave in the interplanetary space to the Earth
magnetosphere. The amplitude of Pc3 magnetic pulsations has good correlation with shock in the solar
wind. But we need to analyze more cases to understand completely the correlation between Pc3
magnetic pulsations with the shock. We also show that evolution of amplitude magnetic pulsations are
correlated with the speed of solar wind.
IV. CONCLUDING REMARKS
We analyzed the amplitude of Pc3 magnetic pulsations during magnetic storm on 29-30 October,
2003. At the sudden commencement correspond to the magnetic storm we observed there is increasing
of amplitude of Pc3 magnetic pulsations. As well, we observed similar time evolution between Dst
index and amplitude magnetic pulsations. This could be meant that we can use the Pc3 magnetic
pulsation recorded by low-latitude single station can be used to monitor the magnetic storm. Another
results, we observed that amplitude magnetic pulsations could be related with the shock of solar wind.

ABSTRACT
Magnetic storm is believed triggered by long duration merging of interplanetary magnetic field and Earth's
magnetosphere. Southward orientation of Bz-component of magnetic field has believed as necessary
condition for the merging. During merging of interplanetary and Earth's magnetic field energetic particles of
solar wind that origin from the Sun are injected into Earth's magnetosphere. We will examine correspondence
between Bz-component and Dst index for several large magnetic storms.
Keywords: interplanetary magnetic field, southward orientation of interplanetary magnetic field, magnetic
storm
INTRODUCTION
Magnetic storm is a manifestation of ring current growth where the ring current is a largest
magnetic disturbance in Earth's magnetosphere current system. According to its strength magnetic
storm is classified into small, intem1ediate and large storm. Strength of the storm could be measured
by using Dst (Disturbance Storm Time) index where the index were derived from averaging of
global magnetic field observed by ground-based stations that uniform distributed at mid and low
latitude. Large, intermediate and small magnetic storm can be identified according to magnitude of
Dst index in the range between 30 < Dst <50 nT, 50< Dst <100 nT and> 100 nT, respectively.
Time evolution of a magnetic storm is divided into 3 phases: initial, main and recovery phase.
Initial phase is a period when the storm is initiated until the Dst value decreased monotonically.
Main phase starts at the end of initial phase until the Dst index reached its minimum value and
recovery phase is started when Dst reached it minimum value until Dst back to its initial value
before the storm.
r
According to its initiation type magnetic stonns are distinguished into gradual and commencement
storm. A gradual storm is a storm that associated with high speed recurrent stream solar wind that .
origin of coronal hole. While commencement storm is usually initiated by a storm sudden
commencement that associated with solar transient phenomena such as solar flares that
accompanied by coronal mass ejection (CME) and/or shock in the solar wind. In this paper we
analyzed large commencement storm with magnitude of Dst index larger than 100 nT. Analysis is
performed by looking at interplanetary magnetic recorded by ACE (Advanced Satellite Explorer).

magnitude of interplanetary magnetic field increased to 29 nT. That caused large magnetic storm
grew to 182 nT dming that period. This means that southward orientation magnitude of magnetic
field can be corresponded with strength of the storm. After maximum of the storm were observed
that magnitude interplanetary field slowly decreased to zero level. This long duration of southward

interplanetary magnetic field and gradually decreasing Qf its magnitude affect long duration of
recovery phase of magnetic storm.
CONCLUDING REMARKS
Large magnetic storms were observed on February and October, 2000. Duration of expansion phase
of the storms seems depend to duration of southward interplanetary magnetic field and sudden
increasing of its magnitude. Large increasing of southward interplanetary magnetic field can affect
an intense magnetic storm. Long duration of southward interplanetary magnetic field and gradually
decreasing of its magnitude can be associated with long duration of recovery phase of magnetic
storm.

termodinamika seperti generalisasi dimensi fraktal Dq dan spektrum singularitasf(a).
geomagnet.
1. Pcndahuluan
Salah satu a! at yang dimiliki LAP AN saat ini adalah magnetometer. A! at ini mempunyai
Maksimum Modulus Transformasi Wavelet (WTMM = Wavelet Transform Modulus
berikut : f(a) = DF{ x I a(x) = a}= D H{ x E supp fJ I a(x) = a}, dengan a(x) mewakili

hanya mempt.myai satu titik, namun spektrum
Sedangkan
Supp:f(a) didefinisikan sebagai selang tutup [a,in , Umaks ], dalam hal ini a,nin ditafsirkan
tentang gambaran ukuran-ukuran singulir.
singularitas sinyal ULF geomagnet. Dengan demikian tujuan pembahasan makalah ini adalah
memformuJasikan spektnun singularitas f(a) sebagai pengganti generalisasi dimensi fraktal
Dq.
proses forrnulasinya seperti kondisi Lipschitz (lipschitz condition), eksponen Holder Jokal
Definisi I. Misalkan 0:::; a< I, vE{a, b) dan tER. Fungsifdikatakan Lipschitz seragam

Jika a < I di titik v maka fungsi f tak terdiferensial di v.
Definisi 2.
fungsif =a, ditulis Sa ~ { tE R I a= reg. Lipschitz f). Selanjutnya spektrum singularitas
f(a) darifadalah dimensi fraktal Sa, ditulisf(a) = DimF Sa. Dan support/(a) adalah himpunan
semua a dengan Sa f. @ , ditulis Supp f(a) = {a I Sa f. f2J}.
Definisi 3.

plementasikan pada data sinyal ULF yang siap dipakai (real time data or near real time

Magnetic storm is the largest magnetic field disturbances in space environment. This
lnce is result of interaction between solar-wind and Earth's magnetic field where via
~of interplanetary magnetic field and geomagnetic field particles that origin of the sun
into Earth's magnetosphere. Magnitude of a magnetic storm is measured by Dst
?ance Storm Time) index. The index is calculated as average of magnetic field that
~d by ground-based magnetometer in the low- and mid-latitude. In this paper we show
ities to monitor the magnetic storm by using magnetic field variation recorded by
ilagnetometer at low-latitude. ULF (ultra-low frequency) in the range period of Pc3
i magnetic pulsation with period between 10-45 and 150-600 seconds, respectively,
1 analyzed.
;ds: Dst index, Pc3 and Pc5 magnetic pulsations, exponent spectral.
RODUCI'ION
Magnetic storm is a consequence caused by ring current development that trigged by
ration somhward orientation of interplanetary magnetic field. During that periods
11etary magnetic field merge with Earth's magnetic field and energetic particles that
rom the Sun injected into magnetosphere and ionosphere. Manifestation of ring
development can be observed as world-wide decreasing H-component of magnetic
ten, the growth of ring-current usually measured by Dst index where it is derived by
tg of global magnetic field.
Another manifestation of interaction between solar wind and Earth's magnetic field
magnetic wave that propagate from interplanetary space through magnetosphere and
~re to ground. According to its waveform and frequency ULF signals are divided into
>US and irregular wave and the continuous signal were divided into Pc3, Pc4 and PeS
iod in the range between 10-45, 45-150 and 150-600 seconds, respectively. This
performed to investigate possibility to use ULF signal that extracted from single
based magnetometer to monitor the storm activity.
A AND METHODS
ln this study the magnetic data recorded by ground-base magnetometer at Biak (BIK)
tas been used. The magnetometer records three components of magnetic field with
ilpling 1-second and high resolution. This only considered H-component of magnetic
ere it represents direction of magnetic field in the north-south. The H-component is
d in Figure 1. To investigate the possibilities of detection of magnetic storm by using
easurement of ground-based magnetometer the ULF signal in the range periods
10 - 600 seconds has been conducted.

In this paper we calculated the spectral exponent ofPLF signals that associated wit
three magnetic storms. We extracted the ULF signal in the band frequency 10-45, 150-60
and 10-600 second for each 20 minutes data as shown in Figure 3. We shifted the windm
every I 0 minutes to the end of one-day data. The spectral exponent was calculated by us in
following relation (Baykut, et. al., 2006):
S(w) ~
fil1
or
log 10 S(w) ~ -~log 1 0 f
Where S( w ), f and p represent power spectral, frequency and coefficient of spectral exponen
respectively. The coefficient of exponent spectral was calculated by taking compariso
between logarithm of power spectral and frequency of ULF signals when the power spectre
maximum. In this case, the power spectral and ULF frequencies was calculated by using Fa~
Fourier Transform as shown in Figure 4. Top, middle and bottom panels in Figure 4 represer

CSULTS AND DISCUSSION
In this paper we considered 3 cases of magnetic storms during September, 1992,
and May, 2000. The magnetic storm usually is measured by using Dst (Disturbance
Time) index where the Dst express strength of ring current that flowing in Earth's
>here and magnetosphere during the storm period. The current causes magnetic
~ances to the Earth's magnetic field where it is as well recorded by ground-base
:tometer. The Dst index which associated magnetic storm September, 1992 is shown in
: 5. The Figure also shows the one-month magnetic variations recorded by groundmagnetometer at BIK station.
We considered large magnetic storm 11-15 April, 1993 where the magnitude of
is > I 50 nT. By using magnetic field variation of BIK we observed the is a big
~ances during that period where its magnitude > 200 nT. Coefficients of spectral
ent associated with the storm are shown in Figure 5 and 6 correspond to ULF signal in
md frequency between 10-45 and 150-600 seconds, respectively. Coefficients of
255
spectral exponent were plotted during 1-day before and after peak of Dst. The coefficients of
exponent spectral in the band frequency of 150-600 seconds is shown in Figure 7 minimum at
- 10:14 UT on 13 September, 1993 as well as in Figure 6 for band-frequency 10-45 seconds.
These minimum values associated with magnetic storm are about -0.95 and -0.32 for ULF
signal with period between 150-600 and 10-45 seconds, respectively.

Figure 12: Coefficient of spectral exponent which calculated for ULF signal in the range
period between 10-45 seconds on 23-25 Mei 2000.
Similarly, magnetic storm on May, 2000 where minimum Dst is about -160 nT caused strong
disturbances at BlK stations. The minimum ~ is - -0.92 at 00:20 UT on 24 May, 2000 for
signal in the range between 10-45 seconds, as shown in Figure 12, and is -1.5 at 00:00 UT on
24 May, 2000 for signal in the range between 150-600 seconds, shown in Figure 13. From
this study the minimum coefficient of spectral exponent of ULF signal in the range period
259
between 10-45 and 150-600 seconds associated to magnetic storm has been observed. The
minimum value coincides with minimum of Dst that describe maximum magnitude of
magnetic storm. Thus, coefficient spectral of ULF signa ls may be can be used to detect a
magnetic storm by using single ground based observation. In future we will analyze more
cases of magnetic storm.

4. CONCLUDING REMARKS
We investigated the possibilities to detect of magnetic storm by using single
measurement of ground-based magnetometer. Coefficients of spectral exponent of ULF
signals in the range period between 10-45 and 150-600 seconds associated with three
magnetic storms on September 1993, and April and May, 2000 has been calculated. And,
good correspondence between minimum coefficients of spectral exponent and minimum Dst
were observed. This shows that coefficient of spectral exponent ofULF signal can be used to
monitor magnetic storm using single ground-based magnetometer.
