3. Dengan memahami sistem, sarjana teknik industri akan memiliki pandangan looking at the full picture sehingga pemahaman dan penyelesaian terhadap suatu kasus tidak secara parsial
4. viewing complexity as a property of the relationship between a system and its observer: the person who is observing a system says that this system is complex when she is not satisfied with the mental model she has of it.
In the end of the introduction, Fioretti makes the distinction between complex, complicated and simple systems:
If the observer knows that he did not identify all the relevant elementary particles, or if he knows that he did not identify all the causal relationships that link the events these particles generate to the actions he undertakes upon the system, or both, then he says that the system is complex.
If the observer did identify all the relevant elementary particles, as well as the causal relationships that link the events that these particles generate to the actions he undertakes upon the system, but he is not able to express all these relationships by means of a universal law, then he says that the system is complicated.
If the observer identified all the relevant elementary particles as well as the causal relationships that link the events these particles generate to the actions he undertakes upon the system, and if he is able to express these relationships by means of a universal law, then he says that the system is simple.
5. Many scientific ideas that are generally accepted by people today were formerly considered to be contrary to intuition and common sense.
For example, most everyday experience suggests that the Earth is flat; actually, this view turns out to be a remarkably good approximation to the true state of affairs, which is that the Earth is a very big (relative to the day to day scale familiar to humans) Oblate spheroid. Furthermore, prior to the Copernican revolution, heliocentrism, the belief that the Earth goes around the Sun, rather than vice versa, was considered to be contrary to common sense.
Another counterintuitive scientific idea concerns space travel: it was initially believed that highly streamlined shapes would be best for re-entering the earth's atmosphere. In fact, experiments proved that blunt-shaped re-entry bodies make the most efficient heat shields when returning to earth from space. Blunt-shaped re-entry vehicles have been used for all manned-spaceflights, including the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle missions.[3]
The Michelson-Morley experiment sought to measure the velocity of the Earth through the aether as it revolved around the Sun. The result was that it has no ether velocity at all. Relativity theory later explained the results, replacing the conventional notions of aether and separate space, time, mass, and energy with a counterintuitive four-dimensional non-Euclidean universe

7. a black box is a device, system or object which can be viewed solely in terms of its input, output and transfer characteristics without any knowledge of its internal workings, that is, its implementation is "opaque" (black). Almost anything might be referred to as a black box: a transistor, an algorithm, or the human mind. The opposite of a black box is a system where the inner components or logic are available for inspection, which is sometimes known as a white box, a glass box, or a clear box.
Ex: black box -> dispenser white box->terlibat dalam sistem misalnya dalam mengambil keputusan
Positive feedback tends to increase the event that caused it, such as in a nuclear chain- reaction. It is also known as a self-reinforcing loop.[2] An event influenced by positive feedback can increase or decrease its output/activation until it hits a limiting constraint. Such a constraint may be destructive, as in thermal runaway or a nuclear chain reaction. Self-reinforcing loops can be a smaller part of a larger balancing loop, especially in biological systems such as regulatory circuits.
Negative feedback, which tends to reduce the input signal that caused it, is also known as a self-correcting or balancing loop.[2] Such loops tend to be goal-seeking, as in a thermostat, which compares actual temperature with desired temperature and seeks to reduce the difference. Balancing loops are sometimes prone to hunting: an oscillation caused by an excessive or delayed negative feedback signal, resulting in over-correction, wherein the signal becomes a positive feedback. What is a feedback system? In its most basic form, feedback is information. A feedback system, in the context of performance technology, is a means of communication whereby the performer, whether it is an individual or a group, receives information that guides their future actions, in order to achieve a desired outcome. Feedback systems can be used as part of an intervention in organizations to increase awareness and improve performance.
The nature of feedback Feedback may have either of two purposes: to influence the quality or quantity of performance. Feedback that affects quality of performance is called formative feedback, while feedback that affects quantity of performance is called summative feedback. In addition, feedback can encourage or discourage behavior depending on what form it takes; positive feedback reinforces behavior while negative feedback extinguishes it. In general, negative feedback can result in an unpredictable substitution or change of behavior (Tosti, 1986), and should be used with caution or avoided altogether. As a rule, develop performance with formative feedback, and encourage repeat performance with summative feedback.
