AFFIX, PREFIX, SUFFIX AND INFIX

A. AFFIX
Affix adalah elemen kata yang ditambahkan sebelum, sesudah atau di
dalam root atau stem (base form dari suatu kata) untuk menghasilkan kata baru.
Tipe Affix
Affix adalah (imbuhan) yang meliputi imbuhan di depan (prefix), belakang
(suffix) dan ditengah (infix)

Infix

Derivation dan Inflection

Kata baru yang dihasilkan mungkin melalui derivation (proses pembentukkan
kata turunan: electrician, happyness, weight ) atau melalui inflection (variasi pada
kata: walks, studied).
Derivation mungkin merubah kelas kata dari base form,
sedangkan inflection tidak. Selain itu, makna pada kata hasil derivation biasanya
berubah secara drastis.
Tidak seperti inflection yang cenderung dapat diprediksi.
Misalnya melalui derivation, happy (adjective) dikombinasikan dengan ness (derivational suffix), menjadi happiness (noun) yang berubah kelas katanya.
Lain halnya dengan walk (verb) yang dikombinasikan dengan -s (inflectional suffix)
menjadi walks (verb) yang tidak berubah kelasnya melalui inflection.
Berbeda dengan derivational suffix, derivational prefix normalnya tidak mengubah
kelas kata dari suatu base form.

B. PREFIX
Prefixes adalah awalan yang diletakkan pada sebuah kata untuk menciptakan
rangkaian kata baru dengan arti yang berbeda untuk memberikan informasi.

Setiap prefix memiliki arti yang berbeda, ketika prefix ditambahkan pada sebuah akar
kata, prefix merubah arti kata tersebut menjadi kata baru yang telah ditambahkan.

2) rederivational prefix + callroot (verb) = recall (verb)

C. SUFFIX
Suffix adalah huruf atau kelompok huruf yang ditempatkan di akhir kata
atau root (bentuk paling sederhana (base form) dari suatu kata tidak dapat
diuraikan lagi) untuk menghasilkan kata baru. Suffix merupakan salah satu
tipeaffix (imbuhan).
Ada dua tipe suffix, yaitu:
1. Derivational Suffix

Derivational suffix jika ditambahkan pada akhir suatu kata akan

menentukan part of speech (kelas kata) nya. Kata baru yang dihasilkan melalui
proses yang disebutderivation (proses pembentukkan kata turunan) dimana
maknanya akan berbeda dari kata atau root sebelumnya.

2. Inflectional Suffix
Inflectional suffix jika ditambahkan pada akhir suatu kata akan memberikan
variasi secara grammatical tanpa mengubah kelas kata dan maknanya secara drastis
(cenderung dapat diprediksi).
