After a long struggle and hard work, Alif is finally appointed as the director of a national company where
he works. Many of his friends who work at the same company congratulate him.
Samuel : Alif, congratulations. You deserved it, Man.
Alif : Thank you very much. This is because you always help me.
Sinta : I am very happy for you, Alif. Now, that you are the director of the
company, I believe the company will develop even faster.
Alif : (replies with a happy tone) Thank you. I cannot forget your collaboration
with me, and I will still need your help.

Let’s play rock, paper and scissors.
Work in pairs. Play scissors, rock, and paper. The winner chooses for himself/herself a situation. The partner
makes an expression of congratulations. For example, the winner chooses situation 11. He/She says, “I just
graduated from SMA.” The partner says, “Congratulations. Your new bag is gorgeous.” Then develop, a
conversation based on that. After that, start all over again by doing the scissors, rock, and paper again, and so
forth. Continue doing that with all the situations provided in the table below.

COMPLEMENTING

a. Social function
Compliments express approval and are aimed at showing that you like some aspects of the other
person’s appearance, belonging or work. It is also to appreciate other people.
o Whom to Compliment:
 Anyone you have occasion to talk with (friends, family, colleagues, and even
strangers)
o What to Compliment
 On someone’s appearance: new car, new haircut, a piece of jewellery, etc
 On a person of his or her achievement/good deed: ‘You’ve done a great job’
 On someone’s possession: ‘What a beautiful house you have.’
 On a person of his or her works/creation: ‘The meal was delicious’.
