359 5. PRESSURE DROP ACROSS GEOTHERMAL TWO-PHASE ORIFICE ORIFICE PLATE
360 Quantifying the pressure drop across the two-phase orifice plate is critical to the operation of the
361 geothermal two-phase pipeline as it affects the siz ing of the two-phase pipeline. While it is desirabl e to
362 have a low pressure drop especially when the geothe rmal WHP is low, it is inevitable.
363 The pressure in the geothermal two-phase pipeline d ecreases on encountering an orifice because the flo w
364 restriction produces higher velocity. The pressure continues to decrease for a short distance after th e orifice
365 and then rises as the flow slows and the velocity p rofile returns to fully developed conditions. The
366 difference between pressure upstream and downstream of the device is called the “net pressure drop”. L ow
367 net pressure drop is desirable for geothermal appli cations and there are currently no specific methods for
two phase geothermal flows to estimate this quantit y, therefore, a new relationship is desirable.

523 measurements across the two-phase orifice plate hav e the advantage of providing real-time data for low
524 running costs and moderate installation (investment ) cost. The advantages of the new correlation are a n
525 improvement in accuracy and the ability to use data from other enthalpy measurement techniques easily.

531 very good agreement compared with field data, inclu ding estimates of pressure drop, discharge coeffici ent
532 and mass flow rate. The computationally predicted p ressure drop for an eccentric orifice type with the same
533 flow rate was lower than the concentric orifice (by 7.6%). This is promising for future geothermal
534 applications that require a low-pressure drop and m inimum mineral scaling deposition.

Highlights
Measuring two-phase is important for geothermal reservoir management and monitoring wells output.
The two-phase orifice plate is the most simple and low-cost flow meter for geothermal applications.
A new simplified two-phase flow correlation with high accuracy is developed for measuring flow from geothermal
wells.
T
Six existing and new correlations for measuring two-phase flow rate were examined and compared to the field
testing.
IP
CFD modelling is used to predict the flow rate of geothermal fluid through the orifice plate.
