B. Balancing Reciprocating Mass
1. The two-cylinder engine shown in Figure 1 has identical cranks, connecting rods, and pistons.
The rotary masses are perfectly balanced. Derive an expression for the shaking forces and
shaking moments using the symbols indicated if φ2 = 90o. Are the primary or secondary
shaking forces balanced? What about the primary and secondary shaking moments?
2. Fig. 2 shows a 8-cylinders in-line engine, with distance between two consecutive planes of a.
For this engine, determine:
a. Crank-angle and Crank-distance relative to the first Crank (Crank number 1).!
b. Then, determine the shaking force and shaking moment due to the 8 reciprocating
unbalances as a function of the first crank angle (1) !
Note: Rotating masses have been fully balanced.
3. The eight-cylinder V engine shown in Figure 3 has identical cranks, connecting rods, and
pistons. The rotary masses are perfectly balanced. Derive an expression for the shaking forces
and shaking moments for the angles and offset values indicated. The V angle is ψ = 90o, and
the phase angles are φ1 = φ5= 0o, φ2 = φ6 = 90o, φ3 = φ7 = 270o, and φ4 = φ8 = 180o. Are the
primary or secondary shaking forces balanced? What about the primary and secondary shaking
moments?
