Pengertian Noun Phrase

Noun Phrase adalah phrase (frasa bahasa Inggris) hasil penggabungan noun (kata
benda), pronoun (kata ganti benda), atau number (berfungsi sebagai head) dengan
satu atau lebih modifier. Frasa bahasa Inggris ini digunakan ketika single noun (kata
benda tunggal) tidak cukup spesifik untuk mengarah kepada suatu kata benda. Frasa
ini dapat dibedakan menjadi basic dan complex noun phrase.

Contoh Kalimat Noun Phrase

Anda ingin mengatakan ke teman ada bahwa seseorang wanita yang ada
dikerumunan orang-orang adalah saudara anda. Maka anda dapat mengatakan:

The fair-skinned woman with a red shirt and black skirt is my sister.
(Wanita berkulit terang dengan kemeja merah dan rok hitam itu adalah saudara saya.)

Basic Noun Phrase

Pengertian Basic Noun Phrase

Basic noun phrase adalah noun phrase yang terdiri

dari determiner (predeterminer, central determiner, dan/atau post determiner)
dan head (noun, number, atau adjective).
Determiner berdasarkan posisinya terhadap determiner lain dapat dibedakan
menjadi predeterminer yang mendahului determiner lainnya, central
determiner yang diletakkan setelah pre dengan atau tanpa post
determiner setelahnya, dan post determiner yang diletakkan
setelah predeterminer dan/atau central determiner. Predeterminer, central
determiner, post determiner dapat terdiri dari hal-hal sebagai berikut.

Sementara head dapat berupa
 noun (kata benda);
 number, yaitu: ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc), cardinal
numbers (one, two, ten, etc), dan general ordinal (next, last, previous, subsequent,
etc); atau
 adjective (kata sifat); contoh: rich, poor, etc.

Complex Noun Phrase

Pengertian Complex Noun Phrase

Complex noun phrase adalah noun phrase yang disusun oleh beberapa komponen

sehingga menjadikan frasa ini menjadi lebih rumit dibanding basic noun phrase.
Komponen complex noun phrase yaitu: pre-modifier, head, dan post-modifier.
Komponen Complex Noun Phrase

Pre-modifier merupakan modifier yang ditempatkan sebelum head pada complex

noun phrase. Modifier ini dapat digunakan secara lengkap maupun tidak. Berbeda
dengan pre-modifier, post-modifier merupakan modifier yang ditempatkan
setelah head pada complex noun phrase. Panjangnya tidak terbatas. Pre-
modifier dan post-modifier dapat terdiri dari hal-hal sebagai berikut.

pre-modifier

determiner Dibedakan menjadi: predeterminer, central determiner, dan post

adverb (kata very, too, soo

keterangan)

adjective (kata dapat digunakan lebih dari satu dengan mengacu pada urutan tertentu
sifat) (adjective order): smart, messy, hot, etc

participle dapat present participle (drinking, sleeping, etc) atau past

participle dimana berperan seperti adjective
 noun (lain) berperan seperti adjective

post-modifier

adjective khusus untuk head berupa indefinite pronoun (someone, somebody,

something) atau kasus tertentu (postpositive adjective)

prepositional preposition + object of preposition: on the table, about you, from him,
phrase etc.

participle (phrase) present participle (standing beside the fireplace, driving with the lights
on, etc) atau past participle (left without notice, stored away from
chemicals, etc)

infinitive (phrase) to eat, to read, etc

relative clause who make me laugh, which is the oldest language, etc
Head pada complex noun phrase dapat berupa
 noun (student, cat, job, sugar, cheese, tolerance, etc)
 pronoun (umumnya hanya dapat ditambahkan post determiner)
 number, yaitu: ordinal number (first, second, third, etc), general ordinal (next,
last, previous,  subsequent, etc), atau cardinal numbers (hanya dapat
ditambahkan post-determiner: one, two, ten, etc)
 adjective (rich, poor, beautiful, etc)
Contoh Complex Noun Phrase

1 a very small school in this country that was built in 1980

 premodifier “determiner” a + “adverb” very + “adjective” small

 head “noun” school
 post-modifier “prepositional phrase” in this country + “relative clause” that was
build in 1980

2 something new to learn

Keterangan:

 head “pronoun” something
 post-modifier “adjective” new + “infinitive” to learn

3 the first to finish the test

Keterangan:

 premodifier “determiner” the
 head “number” first
 post-modifier “infinitive phrase” to finish the test

4 students studying under the tree

 Keterangan:

 head “noun” students
 post-modifier “participial phrase” under the tree
