Descriptive Text

Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose
is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.
In a broad sense, description, as explained by Kane (2000: 352), is defined in the
following sentence:
“Description is about sensory experience—how
experience how something looks, sounds, tastes.
Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds
of perception.”
Purpose of Descriptive text
- To describe a particular person, thing or place.

Generic Structure of Descriptive Text

When writing descriptive text, there are some generic structures (actually not
mandatory) for our writing tto be true. The arrangement is:
# Identification: The introduction of a person, place, animal or object will be
described.
# Description: Describing its features, forms, colors, or anything related to what
the writer describes
Language Feature of Descriptive Text
- Specific participant : It has a certain object and is not common and unique
(only one). For example: Bandengan beach, my house, Borobudur temple,
uncle Jim
- Adjectives : to clarify the noun, for example: a beautiful beach, a handsome
man, the famous place in Jepara, etc.
- Detailed Noun Phrase for adding information about the subject: a beautiful
beach, a handsome man, the famous place in Jepara, etc.
- Simple present tense: The sentence pattern used is simple present because it
tells the fact of the object described.
- Passive Voice : to highlight the object described.
- Action verb: verbs that show an activity (for example, run, sleep, walk, cut
etc)

Baca dan pahami Penjelasan Passive Voice

PASSIVE VOICE

The passive voice is used to show interest in the person or object that
experiences an action rather than the person or object that performs the
action. In other words, the most important thing or person becomes the
subject of the sentence.

EXAMPLES
• The passive voice is used frequently. (= we are interested in the
passive voice, not in who uses it.)
• The house was built in 1654. (= we are interested in the house, not in
who built it.)
• The road is being repaired. (= we are interested in the road, not in the
people who are doing the repairs.)

Sometimes we use the passive voice because we don't know or do not want to
express who performed the action.

EXAMPLES
• I noticed that a window had been left open.
• Every year thousands of people are
a killed on our roads.
• All the cookies have been eaten.
• My car has been stolen!

The passive voice is often used in formal texts. Switching to the active voice
will make your writing clearer and easier to read.

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

How to Write a Descriptive Text

One of the keys to writing a descriptive text is to create a picture in your

reading audience’s mind by engaging all five of their senses – smell, sight,
touch, taste and sound. If you can do this, then your text is a success, if not,
then you have a lot of work to do. The first steps in writing a descriptive
descriptive text
will lay the groundwork for the entire piece.

Step 1: Choose a topic

A descriptive text will usually focus on a single event, a person, a location or
an item. When you write your text,, it is your job to convey your idea about
that topic through your description of that topic. You need to show your
reader what you are trying to describe by illustrating a picture in their
mind’s eye very carefully.

Step 2:: Create an outline

The next step is to create an outline listing the details of the discussion
discussion of
each paragraph.

Step 3:: Write the conclusion

Finally, the conclusion paragraph makes a summary of the entirety of your
text.. This conclusion also needs to reaffirm your thesis (if necessary). Your
conclusion needs to be well written because it is the final thing to be read by
your reader and will remain on their mind the longest after they have read
the remainder of your text.
text

Step 4: Review your text

Your choice of words and language need to convey what you are trying to
describe when you talk about a particular topic. The details that you have
provided should give your reader enough information that they can form a
complete picture. Any details in the text should help a reader to understand
the meaning of the topic from the writer’s point of view.

Step 5: Finish it up
Finally, read your text again very carefully and check for any grammar,
punctuation or spelling errors that are obvious within the text. If there are
any parts that are not completely descriptive or don’t make as much sense as
you would like them to, rewrite them once again and then follow the proof
reading and reading aloud process again to ensure that the final product is
exactly as expected.
