B. TEST PROCEDURES
It should be noted that the continuity and insulation resistance tests for lighting circuit described below
can only be applied to a 'loop-in' wiring system only.

1 CONTINUITY OF CPC IN LIGHTING CIRCUIT

1.1 Test method 1 (CPC conductor terminated at the last point of the circuit and using the neutral
conductor as a return lead).
1.1.1 Connect the neutral conductor to the CPC conductor al the Iast point of the circuit under test.
1.1.2 Test between neutral and earth of the circuit at the DB.
1.1.3 Record the lest results obtained.

1.2 Test method 2 ( CPC terminated at the switch panel and using the phase conductor as a return lead).
1.2.1 Connect the phase conductor {phase wire) to the CPC conductor at the switch panel.
1.2.2 Test between the phase and earth of the circuit at the DB.
1.2.3 Record the test results obtained.

2 CONTINUITY OF RING FINAL CIRCUIT CONDUCTORS

2.1 The phase, neutral and CPC conductors are identified and the end-to-end resistance of each
conductor Is measured separately. Record the resistance readings.
2.2 A finite reading confirms fhal there Is continuity on the ring conductors under test.

3 CONFIRMATION OF RING FINAL CIRCUIT IS WIRED IN A RING (4 ends Joined method)

3.1 Phase and neutral conductors cross-connected
3.1.1 Connect the outgoing phase (P1) conductor lo the returning neutral (N2) conductor. (P1 to N2)
3.1.2 Connect the returning phase (P2) conductor to the outgoing neutral (N1) conductor. [P2 to N1)
3.1.3 Measure Ihe resistance across (P1 to N2) and (P2 to N1) and record Ihe readings.
3.1.4 Measure the resistance at each socket on the ring between phase & neutral.
3.1.5 If the readings obtained from those Sockets wired into the ring are all Ihe same and equal to the
resistance across (P1 to N2) and (P2 to Nl) then the ring final circuit is confirmed.
3.1.6 If Ihe readings are different, this will indicate the presence of a bridge or maybe due to an incorrect
connections at the ends of Ihe ring.

t.t kontraktor: Page 3 of 6 hsj/engr/tnc/elec/cirt_rev0

UNIT KEJURUTERAAN OPERASI
HOSPITAL SEBERANG JAYA

3.1.7 If they are connected P1 to N1 and P2 to N2 then the readings will Increase or decrease as sucessive
measurements round the ring are taken.

3.2 Phase and CPC conductors cross-connected.

3.2.1 The above step is then repeated but with the phase and CPC conductor cross-connected.

4 INSULATION RESISTANCE IN LIGTHING CIRCUIT

4.1 A d.c voltage not less than twice (2x) the nominal voltage of the circuit concerned (r.m.s value for an
a.c supply) shall be applied for the measurement of insulation resistance, provided that the test
voliage need not exceed 500 V d.c for installations rated up to 500V.

4.2 Test method 1 (CPC conductor terminated at the last point of the circuit)
4.2.1 Test between the phase (join together all phase conductors ot the switch panel) and Ihe neutral at the
DB.

4.2.2 Repeat the test for phase to CPC.

4.2.3 Test between the neutral and the CPC at the DB.
4.2.4 Resistance readings should not be less than 2Mohms (for circuits tested individually)

4.3 Test method 2 ( CPC terminated at the switch panel)

4.3.1 4.31 Repeat step 4.21 to 4.23

NOTES:
1 Regulation 713-09-01 colls for a polarity test to be carried out to establish that:
1.1 All fuses, circuit breakers and single pole switches are connected in the phase conductor only.
1.2 The centre contact of Edison Screw (ES) lampholders are connected to the phase conductor.
1.3 The polarity of socket outlets, other accessories and points of utilisation (eg luminaires) is correct
2 The polarity of all circuits must be verified before connection to the supply.
3 Polarity testing must be carried with the supply isolated from the installation.
4 There are a number of ways in which polarity can be tested.
4.1 Polarity test on lighting circuits, for example, can be conducted at the same time as that for continuity of CPC.
5 After connection of the supply, polarity should be confirmed using an approved voltage indicator.
