H&VB ch.10: INCOME CONCEPT FOR FINANCIAL REPORTING
• Income Concept at The Syntactic Level
Berkaitan dengan : Bagaimana cara melaporkan praktek-praktek
akuntansi yang berjalan ? Pembaca laporan keuangan harus
memahami pengertian ACCOUNTING INCOME menurut
pandangan praktek akuntansi yang bersangkutan, serta
bagaimana income tersebut diukur. SFAC no 1 mengasumsikan
pendekatan income, yaitu:
1. The Transaction Approach to Income Measurement . Perubahan aset & liabilitas
2. The Activity Approach to Income Measurement.
• Concepts of Income at Semantic Level
Menjelaskan: Bagaimana para pembaca laporan keuangan mengartikan laporan keuangan /
Income as a Measurement of Efficiency tujuannya profit maximization.
digunakan. Beberapa tolok ukur yang lazim digunakan: Rate of Return on Investment, Rate of
Return on Stockholders Investments, Rate of Return on Total Equity, Ratio Income to Sales.
Accounting vs Economic Income
Accounting Income = Revenue – Expenses – Accounting Depreciation
Economic Income = Revenue – Expenses – Economic Depreciation.
konteks kepastian (situasi-situasi nyata diasumsikan pasti / diketahui semua orang). Namun
kenyataannya banyak unsur ketidakpastian, sehingga para peneliti harus membedakan satu kasus
dimana pasar dikatakan “perfect” dan “complete”. Kenyataannya ada banyak information
asymmetries, sehingga pasar dikatakan “incomplete.”
•Concept of Income at The
Pragmatic Level
Konsep ini menjelaskan: Bagaimana tingkah laku / reaksi pengguna
laporan keuangan.
berikut:
Income as a Predictive Device Income sebagai alat untuk
dibayar makin besar pula.
Hendriksen: Smoothing hides more information than it discloses.
• Managerial Decision Making
Lap. Keu.

• Psychic
• Satisfaction of human wants
• Real
• Increase in economic wealth

• Increases in monetary value
• Measurement problems
• Determining selling price of assets for which there is no ready market
(PP&E)
• Assumption of sales in normal market rather than forced liquidation
Discounted Present Value
• Relevant value on balance sheet:
• PV of future cash flows expected to be received from asset
• PV of future cash flows expected to be disbursed for a liability
• 3 measurement problems
• Depends on estimate of future cash flows
• Both cash flows and timing must be determined
• Selection of appropriate discount rate
• Firm’s assets are interrelated

Revenue Recognition Guidance
FASB ASC 606
• 2002: the FASB and the IASB started a joint project
to develop a common revenue standard for U.S.
GAAP and IFRS
• Goals:
1. Remove inconsistencies and weaknesses in revenue
requirements
2. Provide a more robust framework for addressing revenue issues
3. Improve comparability of revenue recognition practices across
entities, industries, jurisdictions and capital markets
4. Provide more useful information to users of financial statements
through improved disclosure requirements
5. Simplify the preparation of financial statements by reducing the
number of requirements to which an entity must refer
Revenue Recognition Guidance
FASB ASC 606
• 2014: ASC 606 and IFRS No. 15 issued
“Revenue from Contracts with Customers”
• Core principle:
• A company should recognize revenue to depict the
transfer of promised goods or services to
customers
in an amount that reflects the consideration to
which the company expects to be entitled to, in
exchange for those goods or services
Revenue Recognition Guidance
FASB ASC 606
• To achieve the core principle, the following
five step process is to be utilized:
Step 1: Identify the contract(s) with a customer
Step 2: Identify performance obligation(s) in the contract
Step 3: Determine transaction price
Step 4: Allocate transaction price to contract’s performance
obligation(s)
Step 5: Recognize revenue when (or as) the company
satisfies a performance obligation
Revenue Recognition Guidance
FASB ASC 606
• In most cases, revenue recognition under the new standard will be
fairly straightforward
• Example: assume Costco purchases 5,000 cases of Jack London Cabernet
Sauvignon from the Kenwood Winery for $600,000
• Step 1: Identify the contract(s) with a customer
Kenwood has entered into a contract to sell 5,000 cases of wine to Costco
• Step 2: Identify performance obligation(s) in contract
Kenwood has one performance obligation—deliver 5,000 cases of wine to Costco
• Step 3: Determine transaction price
The transaction price is $600,000
• Step 4: Allocate transaction price to performance obligation
Kenwood has only one performance obligation—to
deliver 5,000 cases of wine to Costco
• Step 5: Recognize revenue when (or as) the company satisfies a
performance obligation
Kenwood recognizes revenue of $600,000 when it delivers the wine to Costco
A Closer Look at the Five-Step Process
• Step 2:
Identify Performance Obligation(s) in the Contract
• In cases where a company promises to transfer more
than one good or service to the customer, the company
accounts for each promised good or service as a
separate performance obligation if it is:
1. Distinct; or
2. A series of distinct goods or services that are substantially
the same and have the same pattern of transfer
• Disclosures
• Contracts with customers
• Significant judgments and changes in judgments
• Assets recognized from costs to obtain or fulfill a
contract
