Kelahiran Metodenya
Pencipta “Berlitz Method” (Metode Berlitz) adalah Maximilian
Delphinius Berlitz (14 April 1852 – 6 April 1921). Beliau
adalah ahli bahasa dari Rhode Island, Amerika Serikat.
Beliau pindah dari negeri asalnya, Jerman, bersama dengan
ayah dan ibunya yang Yahudi ke Amerika pada tahun 1872.
1
Berlitz rupanya sakit berat. Butuh 1½ bulan untuk sembuh
total. Begitu sembuh, Berlitz pun masuk kelas. Ia merasa
of Languages”.
4
wilayah Asia. Pertama-tama di Jepang, lalu Thailand, setelah
itu ke semua negara Asia. Wikipedia mencatat bahwa pada
tahun 2011, “Berlitz School” berjumlah 560 outlet di seluruh
dunia.
5
Metamorfosis Buku
Dalam bab sebelumnya telah disinggung sedikit mengenai buku
yang ditulis oleh Berlitz, yang di dalamnya ia merumuskan
dan men-sistematisasi-kan Direct Method ciptaannya. Buku itu
diberinama The Berlitz Method for Teaching Modern Languages,
terbit dalam 2 jilid di tahun 1892.

setiap zaman. Di “Zaman Walkman” dan
“Zaman Kaset”, Berlitz menerbitkan
buku Berlitz Multi-Media, sementara di
“Zaman Internet” dan “Zaman Komputer”,
Berlitz menerbitkan buku
BerlitzEnglish: Language for Life.
3
Perubahan Isi Buku (1)
Dalam bab sebelumnya telah dijelaskan mengenai perubahan isi
buku Berlitz yang mengikuti perubahan produk buku dan
perkembangan teknologi mutakhir. Dalam bab ini akan
dijelaskan lebih mendalam mengenai perubahan isi buku
Berlitz yang berjudul The Berlitz Method for Teaching Modern
Languages, yang telah direvisinya beberapa kali.
1
Di sebelah kiri adalah First Lesson dari buku The Berlitz Method for Teaching Modern Languages terbitan tahun 1909,
sedangkan di sebelah kanan adalah yang terbitan tahun 1927. Sekolah KMI di Pondok Modern Gontor menggunakan
buku terbitan tahun 1927 di sebelah kanan.
2
Di buku The Berlitz Method for Teaching Modern Languages tahun 1909, pelajaran tentang as long as, not so long as,
longer than, dan the longest dimasukkan dalam Second Lesson (sebelah kiri), sedangkan di buku terbitan tahun 1927,
pelajaran itu dicantumkan setelah judul The Clock and The Watch (sebelah kanan).
3
Inggris KMI saja. Tetapi, apakah betul ustadz-ustadz KMI
diberitahu akan notasi-notasi Berlitz tersebut? Jawabannya
hanya pembaca yang lebih tahu.
Kategorisasi Pelajaran
Jika dibandingkan antara buku Berlitz tahun 1909 dengan yang
tahun 1927, maka akan ditemukan pula hilangnya kategorisasi
pelajaran. Dalam buku tahun 1927, terdapat kategorisasi
pelajaran. Berlitz membagi pelajaran di dalam bukunya ke
dalam dua kategori: (1) Preparatory Lesson atau Object
Teaching; dan (2) Elementary Reading and Conversations atau
Teaching through Context.
Di buku The Berlitz Method for Teaching Modern Languages tahun 1909, terdapat dua kategori pelajaran, yakni
pelajaran Preparatory Lesssons dan pelajaran Elementary Reading and Conversations, sedangkan di buku terbitan
1927 kategorisasi ini hilang atau sengaja dihilangkan.
5
Konsekuensinya adalah para ustadz KMI yang mengajarkan buku
ini tidak tahu kategorisasi tersebut dan tidak tahu cara-
cara mengajarkan suatu Lesson dikarenakan notasi-notasi
tersebut hilang. Sungguh amat disayangkan bahwa perubahan
isi buku lantaran revisi justru malah membuat kita para guru
KMI rugi.
6
Perubahan Isi Buku (2)
Dalam bab sebelumnya telah dijelaskan sedikit bahwa pada
tahun 1970, “Berlitz School” menerbitkan buku kursus baru
yang dinamakannya Berlitz Multi-Media. Buku kursus ini
disertai dengan Audio-cassette dan Work Book (buku latihan).
Kemudian, di tahun 2002, “Berlitz School” pun menerbitkan
buku baru yang disebutnya BerlitzEnglish: Language for Life.
Buku ini disertai dengan CD-ROM dan latihan-latihan online
di www.berlitzenglish.com.
1
hanya mendengarkan pronunciation & intonation sang guru di
kelas tapi juga bisa mendengarkan pronunciation & intonation
dalam kaset audio rekaman.
Sistematika Bab
Jika dibandingkan antara buku The
Berlitz Method (1927), buku Berlitz
Multi-Media (1970), dan buku
BerlitzEnglish (2002) dalam aspek
sistematika bab-bab di dalam buku,
maka nampaklah perbedaan besar di
antara ketiganya. Pada buku pertama,
sistematika bab berdasarkan hal-hal
konkret yang gampang dipersepsi
murid dengan hal-hal abstrak yang
sulit dipersepsi kecuali lewat
konteks bacaan. Maka dari itu,
dibedakan antara Object Teaching
dengan Teaching through Context. Bab Kesatu dalam buku BerlitzEnglish: Language for Life
Sedangkan pada buku kedua, (2006), di mana semua skill (listening, reading, writing,
speaking) diikat dalam satu topik/satu judul.
sistematika bab berdasarkan situasi-
situasi sosial-komunikatif yang riel menurut konteks-konteks
tertentu. Pada buku ketiga, sistematika bab berdasarkan
judul-judul atau topik-topik tertentu untuk mengikat semua
skill tadi di dalam satu topik. Misalnya, jika judulnya
“Introduction”, maka semua skill (listening, reading,
writing, speaking) semuanya berkenaan dengan judul
“Introduction” tersebut.
2
Perubahan Cara Mengajar di Kelas
Sejak berubah menjadi Berlitz Multi-Media (1970), maka
pengajaran di kelas dilengkapi dengan cassette player. Dan
ketika berubah menjadi BerlitzEnglish (2002), maka
pengajaran di kelas dilengkapi dengan komputer, projector,
loud-speakers, headset, serta Internet. Penambahan alat
teknologis di kelas menyebabkan kelas menjadi ruang yang
penuh bunyi, penuh gambar visual, dan penuh latihan
interaktif, sehingga murid-murid bisa diasumsikan lebih
cepat maju dan lebih cepat menguasai bahasa asing tinimbang
pada saat mereka memakai buku The Berlitz Method yang amat
simpel dan amat bersahaja itu.

Bedah Buku English Lesson
Dalam Sekolah KMI (Kulliyatu’l-Mu’allimin/Mu’allimat
al-Islamiyah) di Pondok Modern DARUSSALAM Gontor, Jawa
Timur, digunakan buku Berlitz terbitan tahun 1927; “Berlitz
Old”.
Buku English Lesson Kelas 1-3 diambil dari buku The Berlitz
Method for Teaching Modern Languages Jilid 1, sedangkan Buku
English Lesson Kelas 4-6 dari buku Jilid 2-nya. Dua-duanya
terbitan tahun 1927.

Prinsip Utama Metode Berlitz (1)
Pada bab sebelumnya telah dijelaskan bahwa buku English
Lesson untuk Kelas 1 hingga Kelas 6 KMI diambil sepenuhnya
dari buku Berlitz yang berjudul The Berlitz Method for
Teaching Modern Languages Jilid 1 dan Jilid 2 terbitan tahun
1927. Oleh karena itu, di bab ini, akan dijelaskan apa itu
Direct Method atau Berlitz Method.
Prinsip 1
Dilarang keras menerjemahkan pelajaran bahasa Inggris yang
diajar di kelas ke dalam bahasa Arab, bahasa Indonesia,
apalagi bahasa daerah!!!!! Dilarang banget!!!! Mamnu’
jiddan! Begini kata Berlitz mengenai pelarangan
menerjemahkan, berdasarkan buku Berlitz asli:
1
bahasa asing, sepenuhnya harus dihindari. Sejak pelajaran
pertama, sang murid hanya boleh mendengar bahasa yang ia
sedang pelajari (The Berlitz Method for Teaching Modern
Languages, English Part, First Book, 1909, hal. 1).
2
dipelajari. Ini menunjukkan bahwa cara itu bertentangan
dengan akal sehat.
...the ideas conveyed by an expression in one language, are frequently not the
same as those conveyed by the same words in the other. This undeniable fact
alone suffices to show clearly that all translation-methods are deficient, and
proves that every language must be learned out of itself.
3
dipelajari lewat bahasa itu sendiri; bukan lewat bahasa
lain.
4
Prinsip Utama Metode Berlitz (2)
Prinsip 2
abstrak-teoritis (The Berlitz Method for Teaching Foreign
Languages, Jilid 1, 1909, hal. 2-3).
2
object and writing on the blackboard... By directly connecting perception with
the foreign expressions, the pupil, even from the first lesson, answers without
referring to his mother tongue, and in this manner soon thinks as well as
speaks in the new language, and becomes well initiated in its spirit,
peculiarities and idioms.
4
Artinya: ...kosakata secara bertahap diperkaya dengan kata-
kata abstrak dan ungkapan idiomatik, yang biasanya digunakan
oleh guru supaya arti katanya terlihat jelas melalui
konteksnya, atau digunakan sedemikian rupa sehingga sang
guru menemukan dalam pelajaran sebelumnya kata-kata yang
penting untuk menerangkan kata-kata baru.
... the exercises are so arranged that, what the pupil cannot be directly shown,
he learns through the context... Thus the foundation of the vocabulary and
phraseology of the foreign tongue is laid, and when this suffices, every new
word or phrase is carefully explained by the stock of words already thoroughly
mastered.
5
In the more advanced lessons, the new words are frequently explained by
simple definitions containing the previously acquired vocabulary...
6
Prinsip Utama Metode Berlitz (3)
Prinsip 3
Pronunciation suatu kata harus lebih dulu diajarkan daripada
Spelling-nya. Ucapan suatu kata harus diajarkan lebih dulu
daripada tulisannya. Tidak boleh terbalik. Metode Berlitz
bertumpu sangat kuat pada speaking (bukannya writing), maka
oleh sebab itu, pelajaran pronunciation didahulukan daripada
pelajaran spelling.
All new words and expressions should be written on the blackboard, but only
after they have been practiced a little. The student must at first learn through
the ear, in order to acquire a good pronunciation. If he sees the spelling before
having learned the spoken words, he will unconsciously attach to the letters
the pronunciation of his mother tongue and will thus be prevented from fully
grasping and imitating the foreign sounds.
... the teacher reads one or several sentences, makes the student read them,
corrects his pronunciation, ... When the student is a little advanced, dictations
should also be given...
1
Artinya: ... sang guru membaca satu atau beberapa kalimat,
lalu ia menyuruh sang murid membaca kalimat tersebut, lalu
ia mengoreksi ucapannya,... Saat sang murid sudah sedikit
mahir mengucap, maka pelajaran dikte juga harus diberikan...
(The Berlitz Method for Teaching Modern Languages, Jilid 2,
1919, hal. iii-iv).
2
ADVICE TO THE STUDENTS. 1. Do not prepare any lessons, else you risk
acquiring a faulty pronunciation and an erroneous understanding...
Jika ada murid KMI yang mengucapkan satu kata dengan ucapan
yang salah, maka para guru KMI harus hati-hati ketika
mengoreksinya; sang guru tidak boleh sama sekali mengulang
kata yang disalah-ucap oleh si murid tadi. Sang guru
langsung saja mengoreksinya dengan ucapan yang benar. Ucapan
yang salah tidak boleh diulangnya. Mengapa dilarang? Berlitz
menjelaskan:
When correcting a mistake, the teacher should merely pronounce the correct
expression without quoting the mistake. Repeating the mistake, would
accustom the student’s ear to the sound of the mistake, while it should be, on
the contrary, familiarized with the correct form. The latter should be repeated
several times so as to efface all remembrance of the mistake.
3
Prinsip Utama Metode Berlitz (4)
Prinsip 4
Pelajaran Grammar dalam metode Berlitz harus bersifat
implisit (tersembunyi/tersirat), bukannya eksplisit
(nampak/terlihat/tersurat).
1
mereka masing-masing. Itulah yang dimaksud Berlitz dengan
pelajaran Grammar yang implisit.
In the Berlitz Method we teach from the start, the various inflexions, forms of
words and modes of constructing sentences, not only sistematically, but,...
also in a novel and attractive way. The pupil, without ever conjugating,
declining or memorizing grammatical rules, is thoroughly drilled in each
inflection and form, before he passes to new ones, and these exercises are
continued until all the more important elements of the language have been
practiced.
2
secara menarik dan baru. Sang murid, dengan tanpa sengaja
menghapal-hapal perubahan bentuk dan sengaja menghapal
aturan-aturan grammar, mereka terus-menerus dilatih mengubah
bentuk dan dilatih mengubah kata sebelum mereka lanjut ke
pelajaran baru berikutnya, dan latihan-latihan ini terus
diulang-ulang hingga semua unsur kebahasaan yang penting
dikuasai.
3
Prinsip Utama Metode Berlitz (5)
Prinsip 5
Modify! Modify! Modify! Jangan takut pada perubahan! Jangan
alergi pada perubahan! Justru metode Berlitz mengharuskan
kita para guru KMI untuk memodifikasi terus pelajaran
Reading kita. Pelajaran kita harus terus dimodifikasi dan
terus diperbarui dan terus disesuaikan dengan kondisi,
situasi, tempat, suasana, kemampuan murid, kapasitas murid,
tingkat kesulitan pelajaran yang akan diajarkan, dst.
1
sulit. Cukup sang guru menirukan ungkapan yang sudah
tertulis di dalam buku (The Berlitz Method for Teaching
Modern Languages, Jilid 1, 1909, hal. 7).
2
Mengajar dengan Berlitz Old (1)
1
mengenai kategorisasi pelajaran yang dibuat Berlitz dalam
dua jilid bukunya itu.
Kategorisasi Pelajaran
Berlitz menulis dua buku: (1) The Berlitz Method for
Teaching Modern Languages Jilid 1; dan (2) The Berlitz
Method for Teaching Modern Languages Jilid 2.
2
Context ialah kata-kata yang letaknya sebelum atau sesudah
atau ditengah-tengah kata-kata yang sebelumnya sudah
diajarkan. Manfaat Context ialah memudahkan sang murid untuk
memahami kata-kata baru yang bersifat abstrak.
Setelah “Fourteenth
Lesson”, maka pelajaran
selanjutnya masuk kategori
Teaching through context”.
Disinilah terdapat
perbedaan antara buku
terbitan 1909 dan terbitan
1927 yang dipegang KMI.

Mengajar dengan Berlitz Old (2)
Reading is not begun until after the eighth lesson (The Berlitz Method for
Teaching Modern Languages, 1909, Jilid 1, hal. 9).
1
Sedangkan yang termasuk kategori Preparatory Lesson yang
wajib-buku adalah semua pelajaran setelah “Eighth Lesson”,
yakni “Ninth Lesson” hingga “Fourteenth Lesson”. Ini
disimpulkan dari notasi yang ditulis Berlitz di dalam
bukunya sbb:
Before beginning the ninth lesson, all the preceding lessons ought to be read,
so as to accustom the student to the looks of the words and sentences. He
has now a sufficient vocabulary to understand sentences like “Open your
book. We read on page 9. This is not correct” &c. &c. Many other similar
expressions the teacher may introduce whenever an opportunity arises. When
reading the student should be told to answer the questions left unanswered in
the book.
ADVICE TO THE STUDENTS. 1. Do not prepare any lessons, else you risk
acquiring a faulty pronunciation and an erroneous understanding...

From the Ninth Lesson write each exercise (part of it at a time) after having
had it orally at school, and hand it to your teacher for correction.
The exercises are to be read (difficult ones the teacher may read first) and are
also to be written at home.
3
Mengajar dengan Berlitz Old (5)
In the following lessons the new words are no longer made conspicuous by
different type; the teacher should therefore, in his book, underscore all new
words and expressions in order to give the student especial drill in their use.
1
Jenis soal dalam Exercise di pelajaran Teaching through
context dapat dibagi menjadi dua jenis soal: (1) soal yang
meminta murid untuk menjawab dengan informasi dari teks
bacaan (answer-the-following-questions); dan (2) soal yang
meminta murid untuk membuat pertanyaan dari jawaban yang
tersedia (ask-questions-for-the-following-answers).
2
Mengajar dengan Berlitz Old (6)
It is advisable not only to have the student read the exercises in the class, but
also to have him write them as home-work. When the student is a little
advanced, dictations should also be given; anecdotes and short stories
committed to memory should be related, and the conversations in the book be
imitated among several students.
1

sudah sedikit mahir, maka Dikte pun harus dilakukan guru,
anekdot-anekdot dan cerpen-cerpen harus dihapal dan
diceritakan, serta percakapan-percakapan di dalam buku ini
harus ditirukan oleh beberapa murid (The Berlitz Method for
Teaching Modern Languages, Jilid 2, 1919, hal.iv).

3. Guru bertanya “What is this?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri (“A pencil.”)
4. Guru bertanya lagi “What is this?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri lagi (A
book).
5. Guru bertanya lagi “What is this?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri lagi (A
box).
6. Guru bertanya lagi “What is this?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri lagi (A
ruler).
7. Guru bertanya lagi “What is this?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri lagi (A
pen).
8. Guru bertanya lagi “What is this?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri lagi (A
card).
9. Guru menyuruh murid-murid menirukan apa yang diajarkan olehnya.
10. Guru menggunakan tangannya untuk menunjuk benda-benda otentik di
kelas, yakni blackboard, door, table, window, chair dan wall, lalu
membunyikan ucapannya satu persatu dengan ucapan yang benar.
11. Guru mengulangi prosedur sebelumnya, dari no.3-9.
12. Guru menunjukkan beberapa gambar ke kelas (gambar cinema, classroom,
theatre, mosque, church, dan gambar station) dan membunyikan ucapannya
satu persatu dengan ucapan yang benar.
13. Guru mengulangi prosedur sebelumnya, dari no.3-9.
14. Guru bertanya “Is this a pen?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri “Yes, it is.
15. Guru bertanya “Is this a pencil?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri “Yes, it
is.
16. Guru bertanya “Is this a ruler?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri “Yes, it
is.
17. Guru bertanya “Is this a card?”, lalu menjawabnya sendiri “Yes, it is.
18. Guru bertanya “Is this a pen?” (sambil menunjukkan tangannya ke
pensil), lalu menjawabnya sendiri “No, it is not.”
19. Guru bertanya “Is this a card?” (sambil menunjukkan tangannya ke
pensil), lalu menjawabnya sendiri “No, it is not.”
20. Guru bertanya “Is this a ruler?” (sambil menunjukkan tangannya ke
pensil), lalu menjawabnya sendiri “No, it is not.”
21. Guru bertanya “What is this?” (sambil menunjukkan tangannya ke
pensil), lalu menyuruh murid-muridnya menjawab “A pencil”

Mengajar dengan Berlitz Old (10)
Before beginning the ninth lesson, all the preceding lessons ought to be read,
so as to accustom the student to the looks of the words and sentences. He
has now a sufficient vocabulary to understand sentences like “Open your
book. We read on page 9. This is not correct” &c. &c.... When reading the
student should be told to answer the questions left unanswered in the book.
1
Hanya saja, Berlitz di sini tidak menerangkan dan
menjelaskan bagaimana sang guru menghabiskan sesi tersebut
di kelas. Apakah sang guru menyuruh saja beberapa muridnya
untuk membaca “First Lesson” hingga selesai, lalu ia
menyuruh murid lainnya membaca “Second Lesson”, lalu ia
kembali menyuruh murid lainnya membaca “Third Lesson”, dan
begitu seterusnya hingga “Sixth Lesson”, dan terakhir, sang
guru barulah meneruskan pelajarannya, yakni “Seventh
Lesson”, ataukah tidak begitu — kita tidak menemukan
kepastian.

untuk menggantinya dengan aktifitas dictation. Tepatnya,
Dictation Game. Murid diberi satu permainan di mana
sejatinya mereka melihat dan mengingat spelling tulisan di
buku. Bahan dictation game diambil sepenuhnya dari buku,
dari “First Lesson” hingga “Sixth Lesson”. Ini, hemat
penulis, lebih dinamis daripada hanya menyuruh murid
membaca.
