Simple, subsimple, and pure shear strain
(Fossen, Ch. 2.14-2.16)
Rigid rotation involves perfect rotation without strain, while pure shear is simply strain
with no rotation. Note that ISA are generally oblique to the flow apophyses for Wk > 0

Strain analysis
(Fossen, Ch. 3)
• The development of mathematical
tools for quantifying the strain in a
rock. This activity includes the
search for features in rock that can
be measured to define strain
• Rheology, the study of the response of rocks to stress (Engelder and Marshak,
1988, cited in Davis).
• Its aim is to to describe the ability of stressed materials to deform or to flow,
using fundamental parameters such as strain rate, elasticity, and viscosity (Pluijm
page 107)
confining pressure, pore fluid pressure, loading rate, etc)
terbentuk (Davis, pg 120)
Brittle and Ductile Deformations (Davis, pg 121)
• Ductile rock bodies tend to accommodate deformation without loss of cohesion; they do
this by distributing the deformation throughout the body, or at the very least within broad
zones
• Brittle rock bodies, on the other hand, accommodate deformation in ways marked by
pronounced loss of cohesion along through-going fractures. Instead of being distributed,
the deformation is highly concentrated in narrow zones (Davis, pg 121)

Elastic, Plastic, and Viscous Behaviours
Terminologi ‘deformasi brittle’ and ‘deformasi ductile’ fokus kepada strain
Digunakan
istilah lain: elastic, plastic, and viscous behavior
Untuk mempelajari konsep respon batuan ketika mengalami stress kita
dapat mempelajar tiga sifat dasar: elastic, plastic, and viscous behavior (Davis
pg 122)
Elastic Behavior
• Adalah deformasi dimana terjadi
perubahan bentuk yang tidak
pemanen dan dapat kembali seperti
semula (reversible) ketika stress
dihilangkan
• Kenapa reversible? Karena tidak
merusak ikatan antar atom
• Didefinisikan dengan:
• Modulus Young (E) : rasio antara stress
dan deformasi elastis yang dihasilkan
E= σ/e = stress/strain
• Poisson Ratio (v) : rasio strain tranversal
dengan strain longitudinal
v= elat / elong
Plastic Behavior Deformasi Elastis
(Davis, pg 122)
Figure 6.9 Stress–strain curve for elastic–plastic deformation. (a) Elastic strain is replaced by plastic strain as the
yield stress (sy) is reached. When stress is removed the elastic strain is released, and the plastic or permanent
strain remains. (b) In this case the stress is increased to the point where brittle rupture occurs.
