Mempunyai Daya Tahan (durability) 

Daya tahan aspal adalah kemampuan aspal mempertahankan sifat asalnya akibat pengaruh cuaca
selama masa pelayanan jalan. Sifat ini merupakan sifat dari campuran aspal, jadi tergantung dari
sifat agregat, campuran dengan aspal, faktor pelaksanaan dan sebagainya.

b. Kohesi dan Adhesi

Kohesi merupakan kemampuan aspal untuk mengikat unsur-unsur penyusun dari dirinya sendiri
sehingga terbentuknya aspal dengan daktilitas yang tinggi. Sedangkan adhesi menyatakan
kemampuan aspal untuk berikatan dengan agregat dan tetap mempertahankan agregat pada
tempatnya setelah berikatan.

c. Kepekaan terhadap temperatur 

Kepekaan aspal terhadap temperatur adalah sensitivitas perubahan sifat viskoelastis aspal akibat
perubahan temperatur, sifat ini dinyatakan sebagai indeks penetrasi aspal (IP).

d. Kekerasan aspal 

Aspal pada proses pencampuran dipanaskan dan dicampur dengan agregat sehingga agregat
dilapisi aspal atau aspal panas disiramkan ke permukaan agregat yang telah disiapkan pada
proses peleburan. Pada waktu proses pelaksanaan, terjadi oksidasi yang menyebabkan aspal
menjadi getas (viskositas bertambah tinggi).

e. Viskoelastisitas Aspal 

Viskoelastisitas aspal adalah suatu material yang bersifat viskoelastis yang sifatnya akan berubah
tergantung pada temperatur atau waktu pembebanan. Sifat viskoelastis aspal adalah untuk
menentukan pada temperatur beberapa pencampuran aspal dengan agregat harus dilakukan agar
mendapatkan campuran yang homogen dimana semua permukaan agregat dapat terselimuti oleh
aspal secara merata dan aspal mampu masuk ke dalam pori-pori agregat untuk membentuk ikatan
kohesi yang kuat dan untuk mengetahui pada temperatur berapa pemadatan dapat dilakukan dan
kapan harus dihentikan.

a. Durability of asphalt

durability is the ability of asphalt to maintain its original properties due to weather influences
during the service life of the road. This is a characteristic of the asphalt mixture, so it depends on
the kind of the aggregate, the mixture with asphalt, the implementation factor and etc.

b. Sensitivity to temperature 

sensitivity of asphalt to temperature is the sensitivity to changes in the viscoelastic properties of

asphalt due to temperature changes, this property is expressed as the asphalt penetration index
(IP).
c. Hardness of asphalt 

The mixing process is heated and mixed with the aggregate so that the aggregate is coated with
asphalt or hot asphalt is poured onto the surface of the aggregate that has been prepared in the
smelting process. During the implementation process, oxidation occurs which causes the asphalt
to become brittle (higher viscosity).

d. Viscoelasticity of Asphalt 

The viscoelasticity of asphalt is a viscoelastic material which properties will change depending
on the temperature or time of loading. The viscoelastic nature of asphalt is to determine at the
temperature some mixing of asphalt and aggregate must be done in order to get a homogeneous
mixture where all the surface of the aggregate can be evenly covered by the asphalt and the
asphalt is able to enter the aggregate pores to form a strong cohesion bond and to find out on at
what temperature the compaction can take place and when it should be stopped.
