ABSTRACT
This study aims to determine the phenomenon of commodification that occurs due
to the development of the internet and social media. The theory used in
researching this commodification is the theory put forward by Vincent Moscow
on the types of commodification, namely commodification of content,
commodification of audiences, and the commodification of labor. This research is
a kind of qualitative research using cyber media analysis method. The object of
research used is 8 student who get likes above thousand in account instagram
@uns.cantik. The selection of 8 students as subject is based on photo observation
that get the most likes above thousand and reduced to 8 photos. The next step is to
analyze the media text by making observations in the account @uns.cantik that
includes the online identity of the members and also the commodification
contained in the product ad. While the media context obtained by conducting
interviews with admin @uns.cantik to confirm the findings at the text level.
The findings at the text level are commodification done by taking their photos
without being asked for permission. After the photo shoot took place, the female
students who became victims chose to surrender and not take the fight. This is due
to the lack of knowledge of the term commodification that is currently prevalent
in social media. In addition, their photos are profitable for admins as many
advertisers are interested in promoting their products in the beautiful @ uns.local
account that has tens of thousands of followers. While the findings at the context
level are confirming the findings at the text level through interviews. Admins
benefit from advertising and members do not mind to be freely commodified.
