4. Read the following more explanation about modals auxiliary verb!

Modals in offers
a. When you are offering something to someone, you use ‘Would you like’.
Example : ‘Would you like a drink?’
b. When you are offering help or offering someone to do something you can use ‘Would
you like me to …?
Example : “Would you like me to come for meal?
c. You can use ‘Will you’ to offer something to someone you know quite well.
Example : “Will you have another biscuit, Dave?
d. You use ‘May, Can, or Could’ when you are offering to do something for someone.
‘Could I’ is more polite.
Examples : - Can I help you with the dishes?
- Could I help you to carry those bags?
- May I help you to write the letter?
e. You also use ‘Shall I’ when you are offering to do something, especially if you are fairly
sure that your offer will be accepted.
Examples : - Shall I shut the door?

- Shall I spell that for you?


f. You use ‘Can’ or ‘Could’ to make an offer when you want to say that you are able to help
someone.
Examples : - I have a car. I can take Daisy to the station.
- I could pay some of the rent.
g. You also use ‘I will’ to offer to do something.
Examples : - I’ll give them a ring if you like.
- I’ll show you the hotel.
h. There are other ways of making offers without using modals.
i. Examples : - Let me take you to your room.
- Let me drive you to London.

5. Practice the dialogs above with your seatmate. Pay attention to the pronunciation
and the intonation. Consult to your teacher if you find difficulty.
