• The concept: ‘decoupling’ superstructure
from substructure to induced ground
motions caused by earthquake motions, by
‘inserting’ seismic isolator/isolation rubber
bearing between the superstructure and
substructure.
• Seismic isolator which has low horizontal
stiffness, so it can extend the natural
vibration period of the structure, at the same
time reducing the acceleration responses of
the upper structure, to ensure the safety of
the bridge.

LRB Behavior
• Damping : characteristic that opposes motion and tends to return the system to rest when it is
disturbed. (BASE ISOLATION OF STRUCTURES – Design Guidelines, Kelly)
• Energy Dissipation : lead core which confined by steel plates, has low yield stress 10 Mpa, this
allows it to perform elastoplastic.
Before lead yield stress – (in condition: wind load, traffic load, minor earthquake) LRB is laterally
(resulted from high elastic stiffness of the lead) and vertically stiff (resulted from high rigidity of
steel rubber layer).
After lead yield stress – (icondition: earthquake) lateral stiffness is reduced, equal to shear
stiffness of rubber.
