⮚ GENERIC STRUCTURE
The Generic Structure of Descriptive Text consists of Identification and Description.
Identification: Identifies phenomenon to be described.
Description: Describes parts, qualities, characteristics, etc.
⮚ LANGUAGE FEATURES
Descriptive often uses 'be' and 'have'. Tense which is often used is Simple Present
Tense. However, sometimes it uses Past tense if the thing to be described doesn't
exist anymore.
Significant Grammatical Features:
- Focus on specific participants
(My English teacher, Andini's cat, My favorite place)
- Use of Simple Present Tense
- Verbs of being and having 'Relational Processes'.
(My mum is really cool, She has long black hair)
- Use of descriptive adjectives
(strong legs, white fangs)
- Use of detailed Noun Phrases to give information about the subject.
(a very beautiful scenery, a sweet young lady, very thick fur)
- Use of action verbs 'Material Processes'
(It eats grass, It runs fast)
- Use of adverbials to give additional information about behavior
(fast, at tree house)
- Use of Figurative language
(John is as white as chalk.)
K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid, who is familiarly called Gus Dur, served as the 4th
President of the Republic of Indonesia from 20 October 1999 to 24 July 2001. He was
born on 4 August 1940 in Denanyar Village, Jombang, East Java. Gus Dur is the first son of
six children. His father was a founder of the large Nahdlatul Ulama organization, named

K.H. Wahid Hasyim. While his mother's name is Hj. Sholehah is the daughter of the
founder of the Denanyar Islamic Boarding School, Jombang, K.H. Bisri Syamsuri.
Since childhood, Gus Dur had a love of reading and diligently used his father's
private library. Besides that, he also actively visits public libraries in Jakarta. At the age
of ten, Gus Dur was already familiar with various magazines, newspapers, novels and books.
Besides reading, his hobbies are also playing football, chess and music.. Another hobby
that also complements his hobby is watching cinema. This passion has given rise to a deep
appreciation in the world of film. This is why Gus Dur was appointed as chairman of the
Most of Gus Dur's teenage years were spent in Yogyakarta and Tegalrejo. The
following period, Gus Dur lived in Jombang, at the Tambak Beras Islamic Boarding School,
until then continuing his studies in Egypt. Before leaving for Egypt, his uncle proposed to
him a girl, namely Sinta Nuriyah, daughter of Haji Muh. Sakura. Her marriage took place
when Gus Dur was in Egypt. After returning from his journey in search of knowledge, Gus
Dur returned to Jombang and chose to become a teacher. In 1971, he joined the Ushuludin
Faculty of TebuIreng Jombang University, three years later, he became secretary of the
Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School, and in the same year, Gus Dur began to become a
writer.
In 1984, Gus Dur was elected by acclamation by a team of ahl hall wa al-aqdi
chaired by K.H. As'ad Syamsul Arifin to assume the position of general chairman of PBNU
at the 27th Congress in Situbondo. This position was reaffirmed at the 28th Congress at
the Krapyak Islamic Boarding School, Yogyakarta (1989). The position of general chairman
of PBNU was then relinquished when Gus Dur became the 4th President. During his time as
President, many of Gus Dur's thoughts were controversial. His opinions often differ from
those of many people. Abdurrahman Wahid died at the age of 69 on December 30 2009 at
