Furthermore, only when an adequate pool of qualified candidates is available can the selection
process function effectively.
Figure 7-3 is a suggested procedure for selecting employees. The procedure starts with several
candidates for a particular job. At each stage in the process individuals are rejected for various
reasons.
The preliminary screening and preliminary interview eliminate candidates who are obviously not
qualified for the job. In preliminary screening, application blanks, personnel data sheets, school
records, work records, and similar sources are reviewed to determine characteristics, abi|ities, and
past performance of the individual. The preliminary interview is then used to screen out unsuitable
and uninterested applicants who passed the preliminary Screening phase. If caution is not exercised
by the organization during the preliminary Interview, some qualified applicants may be eliminated.
The danger of this happening can be minimized by using structured intervaews With specific
screening criteria.
