c. The Social Functions of Procedure Text ; Manual
The purpose of procedure texts is to give readers a set of specific, sequential steps or
instructions that will show them how to do something while also helping them to
achieve the desired result. Recipes, instructions for how to perform, use, or render
things, scientific experiments, directions for a chart, manuals, and other procedure
texts are only a few examples.
From text 1 above, discuss and answer the following questions :

The followings are the social function of procedure text:
1. It is used to describe how something is done in sequenced steps.
2. It provides a series of steps in sequence that explain the readers how to do
something while allowing them to reach the outcome successfully.

something.

Text 1.
How To Install Printer Software To Your Computer

Materials :
- Printer Device
- CD or Device Software
Steps :
1) First, Insert the CD into the CD Room on your computer.
2) Second, Wait until the CD Room finish reading the CD
3) Then, a dialogue box will pop out on your computer screen, giving you an option
to install the software, choose “Yes” to continue with the installation process.
4) Next, the dialogue box will let you to choose your “Country Region”, choose
“Asia” if you live within Asia continent. Then click “Next” button
5) After that, choose your country, then click “Next” button
6) Next, the dialogue box will let you to choose type of installation, the best is to
choose “Easy Install” option, but if you are an expert, you can also choose
“Custom Install” option.
7) After that click “Install” button, wait for about 10 minutes.
8) During the installation process is running, plug the power cable into the
electricity socket, and then turn on the printer by pressing the power button.

e. How to create a procedure text ; manual


1) Think logically and assume very little.
The challenge in writing a good procedural text is to deliver your instructions in a
logical manner. Ensure your instructions are straight to the point and that you as
the author understand what you are trying to achieve.
2) Points to consider before "proceeding"
What will you add to your written text to help the audience understand better?
(diagrams, illustrations, pictures etc.)
3) But What to Write About?
One of the things that make procedural texts an accessible writing genre for
students is one of the things that can also make it an uninspiring genre for
students to engage in, that is, its factual, straightforward nature. There is a reason
why we don’t sit up all night reading user manuals! Entertaining the reader is not
the priority of a procedural text.

D. CLOSING (Conveyed In Conclusion Session of Learning Activity)


1. Summary
 Procedure text is the text that explains how something works or how to use
instruction/ operation manuals.
 A manual procedure text is a text that provides instructions or guidelines on how
to perform an activity and serves as a reference book on the activity.
 Social Functions:
a. It is used to describe how something is done in sequenced steps.
b. It provides a series of steps in sequence that explain the readers how to do
something while allowing them to reach the outcome successfully.
c. The communicative purpose of the text is to tell the steps of making or doing
something.
 Generic Structures :
a. Goal/aim
This part of the text describes the purpose of doing or operating something.
b. Materials/equipments
This part describes the materials or equipments needed in the process of doing
or operating something. It is important to note that some of procedure texts
do not provide materials section.
c. Steps/methods
This part describes the set of instructions to achieve the goal.
 Language Features of Procedure Text ; Manual
As stated by Nurdiono (2016), there are several language features that are
commonly used in constructing a procedure text. The description of each feature
is depicted below.
1) Generally using simple present tense.
 I feel great! Pauline loves pie.
 I’m sorry to hear that you’re sick.
2) Using adverbial of sequence or using temporal adjective.
For example : first, second, the last, etc.
3) Using imperative sentences or command.
In the examples of imperative sentences here, you'll note that each line is
issuing a command of some sort:
 Pass the salt.
 Move out of my way!
 Shut the front door.
4) Using action verbs.
For example : turn, put, cut, etc.
5) Using conjunctions to link a process to another process.
Some of the conjunctions that show a sequence of process here are such as :
next, then, after that, etc.
6) Using adverb of time to express details of time.
For example : for five minutes, in two hours, etc.
 Tips for writing a great procedural report
4) Keep everything in order.
5) List all the items that will be required to complete the task.
6) Keep your instructions short, sharp and to the point.
7) Use the correct language and terms.
8) Find or create some labeled diagrams if possible.
9) Use paragraphs effectively. Each new element of your information report
should start with a new paragraph. Be sure to check out our own complete

10) Procedural texts are always written in present tense and from a third person
perspective.
