Definition of Poem :
A poem is a piece of writing in which the words are chosen for their beauty and sound are carefully
arranged, often in short lines which rhyme.
Linguistic Features :
• Metaphore : frase kiasan yang menggunakan simbol, gambar, cerita atau contoh nyata
untuk mengekspresikan kualitas yang dimiliki oleh seseorang atau sesuatu, atau untuk
mewakili hal yang kurang nyata.
Example : Her face shone like the sun
• Simile : menyamakan seseorang dengan sesuatu biasanya diikuti dengan kata like, as dan
sebagainya.
Example : She is as sweet as waffles
• Personification : Benda mati berbuat seperti manusia atau seolah-olah hidup.
Example : The wind song through the meadow
• Hyperbole : Melebih-lebihkan sesuatu hal sehingga terkadang tidak mungkin.
Example : I had a ton of homework
• Symbols : Sesuatu merupakan lambang atas suatu peristiwa atau sifat
Example : Rose means love
Type of Poems :
• Epic Poem : Based on myths, heroic figures
• Narrative Poem : tells a story, characteristic, has plot and setting.
• Lyric Poem : Poetry that expresses a speaker’s personal thought or feelings.
