Conditional Sentence

Definition of Conditional Sentence

A conditional sentence is a compound sentence that has a condition about
imagination, supposition, and something that has never happened. This presupposition
expressed may or may not be realized.
A conditional sentence consists of an independent clause and a dependent clause which
usually starts with the word 'if'. A sentence consisting of these two clauses can then be
called a conditional sentence. However, there are some sentences that can start with
'when'.

Pengertian Conditional Sentence

Conditional sentence adalah kalimat majemuk yang memiliki sebuah kondisi tentang
imajinasi, pengandaian, dan suatu hal yang belum pernah terjadi. Pengandaian yang
diungkapkan ini bisa saja terwujud atau tidak terwujud.
Conditional sentence terdiri dari independent clause dan dependent clause yang biasanya
dimulai dengan kata ‘if’ atau jika. Sebuah kalimat yang terdiri dari kedua klausa tersebut
barulah bisa disebut conditional sentence. Namun, ada beberapa kalimat yang bisa saja
diawali dengan ‘when’ atau kapan.

The form of the conditional sentence is

if clause + main clause

 if clause is a clause that is part of the presupposition

 The main clause is a sentence that contains the consequences of the conditional
condition at the beginning of the sentence

 if clause adalah klausa yang merupakan bagian dari pengandaian

 main clause adalah kalimat yang berisi konsekuensi dari kondisi pengandaian di
awal kalimat

Example of a conditional sentence :

"If i save enough money, i can go to Bali this year"
2. main clause + if clause
"My sister can have dessert if she finishes her homework"

“Jika aku menabung dengan cukup, aku bisa ke Bali tahun ini”
2. main clause + if clause
“Adikku bisa mendapatkan pencuci mulut jika ia menyelesaikan pekerjaan

A. Conditional Sentence Type 0

Used to express a common fact that is already known to many people.
Formula :

if + simple present + simple present

Or,

simple present + if + simple present

Example :
a. "If it rains, then the road will be wet."
b. "If you stare at the sun for too long, your eyes will be damaged."

A. Conditional Sentence Tipe 0

Digunakan untuk mengungkapkan sebuah fakta yang lumrah sudah diketahui banyak
orang.
Rumus :

if + simple present + simple present

Atau,

if + simple present + simple present

Contoh :
a. "Jika hujan turun, maka jalan akan basah."
b. "Jika kamu menatap matahari terlalu lama, maka matamu akan rusak."

B. Conditional Sentence Type 1

Is a form of conditional sentence that is used to express when the consequences or
results are likely to occur in the future.
Formula :

if + simple present + simple future

tense
Or,

simple future + if + simple present

Example :
a. "If you tell your mother the truth, she will forgive you."
b. "I'll buy you a pizza if you wait for me a little longer."

B. Conditional Sentence Tipe 1

Adalah bentuk kalimat pengandaian yang digunakan untuk mengungkapkan ketika
konsekuensi atau hasilnya memungkinkan untuk terjadi di masa yang akan datang.
Rumus :

if + simple present + simple future

simple future + if + simple present

Contoh :
a. "Jika kamu memberitahu ibumu yang sebenarnya, dia akan memaafkanmu."
b. "Aku akan membelikanmu pizza jika kamu menungguku sedikit lebih lama."

C. Conditional Sentence Type 2

Is used to express when a consequence or result can be realized even though the
probability is very small. Second conditional sentences are very suitable to be used to
express dreams and wishful thinking. The second conditional sentence uses would, could
and might which is used to explain how much the condition will occur.
Formula :

if + past tense + past future

Or,

past future + if + past tense

Example :
a. "If I became president of this country, I would pay more attention to the education
sector."

When using a second conditional sentence to give advice, usually use the phrase 'if i were'.
Example :
a. "I wouldn't think about it if I were you."

C. Conditional Sentence Tipe 2

Digunakan untuk mengungkapkan ketika konsekuensi atau hasilnya bisa terwujud
walaupun kemungkinannya sangat kecil. Second conditional sentence sangat cocok
digunakan untuk mengungkapkan mimpi dan angan-angan. Second conditional sentence
menggunakan would, could dan might yang digunakan untuk menjelaskan seberapa besar
kondisi tersebut akan terjadi.
Rumus :

if + past tense + past future

Atau,

past future + if + past tense

Contoh :
a. "Jika aku menjadi presiden di negara ini, aku akan lebih memperhatikan sektor
pendidikan."

Ketika menggunakan second conditional sentence untuk memberi nasihat, biasanya

menggunakan frasa ‘if i were’.

a. "Aku tidak akan memikirkan hal itu jika aku menjadi kau."

D. Conditional Sentence Type 3

It is used when you want to express a condition that cannot possibly be realized at
all.
Formula :

if + past perfect + future perfect

Or,

future perfect + if + past perfect

Example :
a. "If my grades were good, I would have gotten a better job."
b. "If only he had taken the bus, he wouldn't have been in a car accident."

D. Conditional Sentence Tipe 3

Digunakan ketika ingin mengungkapkan sebuah kondisi yang tidak mungkin bisa
terwujud sama sekali.
Rumus :

if + past perfect + future perfect

Atau,

future perfect + if + past perfect

Contoh :
a. "Jika nilai-nilaiku bagus, aku pasti sudah mendapatkan pekerjaan yang lebih baik."
b. "Jika saja dia naik bus, dia tidak akan mengalami kecelakaan mobil."
