Kata pengantar
Puji syukur kehadiran Allah SWT Yang telah memberikan rahmat dan Hidayah
nya, sehingga kami dapat menyelesaikan proyek buku ini dengan judul
Kerusuhan 1998. Adapun tujuan dari penulisan dari buku ini adalah untuk
memenuhi PTS(Proyek Tengah Semester) pada semester ini dan untuk
memperdalam pengetahuan tentang sejarah Indonesia. Selain itu, buku ini juga
bertujuan untuk memperluas wawasan tentang sejarah di Indonesia bagi para
pembaca dan juga penulis. Kami mengucapkan terima kasih kepada Muallim dan
Muallimah yang telah membimbing kami selama proses penulisan buku ini. Kami
juga berterimakasih kepada semua pihak yang telah membagi ilmu-ilmunya
sehingga kami dapat menyelesaikan buku ini tepat pada waktunya dan dengan
sebaik-baiknya. Kami menyadari buku yang kami tulis ini masih jauh dari kata
sempurna. Oleh karena itu, kritik dan saran yang membangun akan kami
nantikan demi kesempurnaan buku ini.

Praise the presence of Allah SWT Who has given His grace and guidance,
so that we can complete this book project with the title Riot 1998. The
purpose of writing this book is to fulfill the PTS (Middle Semester Project)
this semester and to deepen knowledge about history Indonesia. In
addition, this book also aims to broaden the knowledge of history in
Indonesia for readers and writers alike. We would like to thank Muallim
and Muallimah who have guided us throughout the process of writing
this book. We also thank all those who have shared their knowledge so
that we can complete this book on time and in the best possible way.
We realize that the book we are writing is still far from perfect.
Therefore, we will look forward to constructive criticism and
suggestions for the perfection of this book.
Pada tanggal 13 Mei 1998, terjadi kerusuhan yang berlangsung hingga
15 Mei 1998, yaitu Kerusuhan Mei 1998. Penyebab terjadinya kerusuhan
Mei 1998 diawali oleh krisis finansial Asia pada tahun 1997. Kerusuhan
semakin memanas setelah empat mahasiswa Universitas Trisakti
tewas ditembak aparat di dalam kampus pada 12 Mei 1998. Peristiwa
Kerusuhan Mei 1998 kemudian mengakibatkan turunnya Soeharto
dari jabatannya sebagai Presiden Indonesia.
On May 13, 1998, there was a riot that lasted until May 15,
1998, namely the May 1998 Riots. The cause of the May
1998 riots was initiated by the Asian financial crisis in 1997.
The riots escalated after four Trisakti University students
were shot dead by the police inside the campus on 12
May 1998. The May 1998 riots then resulted in the
resignation of Suharto from his position as President of
Indonesia.
 Ekonomi memburuk
Semua berawal pada bulan Juli 1997, terjadi krisis keuangan yang
melanda hampir seluruh Asia Timur. Terjadinya krisis keuangan tahun
1997 juga dipicu oleh anjloknya nilai mata uang rupiah dan
membengkaknya angka utang luar negeri oleh swasta.

 The economy is deteriorating

It all started in July 1997, when the financial crisis hit almost all
of East Asia. The 1997 financial crisis was also triggered by the
fall in the value of the rupiah currency and the increase in the
number of foreign debts by the private sector.
Krisis keuangan ini lantas menimbulkan kekacauan dan kepanikan negara-
negara ASEAN, salah satunya Indonesia. Indonesia merupakan salah satu
negara yang terkena dampak krisis ekonomi paling parah.
This financial crisis then caused chaos and panic in ASEAN countries, one of which
was Indonesia. Indonesia is one of the countries most severely affected by the
economic crisis.
Di Indonesia, rupiah menurun drastis yang kemudian mengakibatkan berbagai
perusahaan yang meminjam dollar harus membayar biaya yang lebih besar.
Selain itu, para pemberi pinjaman juga menarik kredit secara besar-besaran
sehingga terjadi penyusutan kredit dan kebangkrutan. Kepanikan masyarakat
pun kian bertambah saat terjadi kenaikan harga bahan makanan.

borrowing dollars having to pay higher fees. In addition, lenders also withdraw
credit on a large scale, resulting in credit shrinkage and bankruptcy. Public panic
also increased when there was an increase in food prices.


Kronologi Tragedi Trisakti, Faktor Terjadinya Kerusuhan 1998

Goyahnya perekonomian di Indonesia pada saat itu menimbulkan aksi
protes dari masyarakat, terutama para mahasiswa.

The shaky economy in Indonesia at that time led to protests from the public,
especially students.
Tanggal 12 Mei 1998 para mahasiswa melakukan aksi damai dalam kampus. Setelah itu,
mahasiswa mulai turun ke Jalan S Parman dan hendak berangkat ke gedung MPR atau DPR.
Melihat segerombolan mahasiswa di depan kantor tersebut membuat aparat polisi
menghadang laju mereka.
On May 12, 1998 the students staged a peaceful demonstration on campus. After
that, students began to descend to Jalan S Parman and were about to go to the
MPR or DPR building. Seeing a group of students in front of the office made the
police officers block their progress.
 Setelah itu, terjadi perundingan antara pihak polisi dengan para mahasiswa.
Kesepakatan yang dicapai ialah para mahasiswa tidak melanjutkan aksi untuk
rasa mereka ke MPR atau DPR.
 After that, negotiations took place between the police and the students. The
agreement reached was that the students did not continue their demonstrations
to the MPR or DPR.
Saat para mahasiswa sedang membubarkan diri, tiba-tiba terdengar suara
tembakan dari arah belakang barisan mahasiswa. Para mahasiswa pun
dengan panik segera berlari mencari perlindungan dengan masuk ke dalam
gedung-gedung kampus.

the line of students. The students panicked and immediately ran for cover by
entering the campus buildings.
Sekitar pukul 17.15, situasi di kampus sangatlah mencekam. Beberapa korban jiwa
juga berjatuhan, salah satunya adalah empat mahasiswa Trisakti yang tewas
karena tertembak. Keempat mahasiswa Trisakti tersebut adalah Elang Mulia
Lesmana, Hafidin Royan, Heri Hartanto, dan Hendiawan Sie.
