Introduction:
Geoinformatics &
Surveying
Geoinformatics Definition
• Geo + informatics
Geo → Earth (surface, above, below)
Informatics → The sciences concerned with
gathering, manipulating, storing, retrieving, and
classifying recorded information

• Two aspects of geoinformatics

Measurement and management
Geoinformation: What is it?
• Any artificial or natural object
/phenomena on, below or
above the surface of the
earth
• Examples:
• Building
• Road
• Topography
• Rivers
• Flooding
• Droughts
• etc.

The fundamental aspects of
geoinformatics:
1. Measurement of
Geoinformation Z
(X,Y,Z)
▪ Geometry: What is Y
where?
▪ Identification: What is
what?

X
The fundamental aspects of
geoinformatics:
2. Management of
Geoinformation
▪ Management (storage,
retrieval, presentation)
of information
▪ Manipulation (analysis
based on information)
Measurement tools
• Primitive techniques
➢ Hand, rods, guessing
➢ ‘Jengkal’, ‘Hasta’, ‘Depa’ are traditional length
units.

A human body has a length limitation.

Human bodies are also a different one to another.
Measurement tools
• Land surveying techniques
➢ Using roll meter,
Compass
➢ Using roll meter,
Waterpass, Theodolite,
etc.
➢ But it is cumbersome
and cannot be done in
inaccessible areas
➢ Human dependence
Measurement tools
• Electronic Land surveying
techniques:
➢ Using EDMI and Total
station
➢ Using robotic total
station
➢ Fast and accurate
➢ Difficult for
inaccessible areas, as
points need to be
occupied
Measurement tools
• Aerial photogrammetry :
➢ Balloons or aircraft based
➢ Types:
✓ Single photograph for
interpretation
✓ Stereo for 3D generation
and measurement
➢ Limitations:
✓ Still we need to fly to
collect data every time
✓ Costly affair and may not be
possible in bad weather
Measurement tools
• Satellite remote sensing:
➢ Commercial remote sensing
since 1972
➢ From 600 km to 900 km
altitude
Measurement tools
• Satellite remote sensing:
➢ To get synoptic view of
terrain regularly in several
wave bands
Measurement tools
• Satellite remote sensing:
➢ Vary level spatial resolution
➢ Used for both measurement
and identification
Measurement tools
• satellite remote sensing:

Management of Geoinformation
• Requirement to store and retrieve information
efficiently
• Requirement to incorporate all information
collected in analysis to suit modern application
• GIS does it all..
