a. Pendahuluan

Before study this part, please observe the following pictures.

When making a list of things, you sometimes mention plural

things. Most singular nouns need an addition of ‘s’ to make
them into the plural. Examples:
one teacher two
teachers one student
two students one bottle
two bottles
Some countable nouns are made into the plural with the following forms.
1. For a noun ending with a consonant + y, change y into i + es.

Examples: one lady two ladies

2. For a noun ending with ch, x, sh, ss or s, add es. Examples:
a match two matches
a box two boxes
a brush two brushes
a glass two glasses
a bus two buses

3. For a noun ending with the vowel o, add es. Examples:

a potato two potatoes
a tomato two tomatoes

Other countable nouns have irregular plural forms. Examples:

a man two men
a woman two women

a child two children

a person two people

• Countable nouns
Biscuit, cup and apple are examples of countable nouns. Therefore, we can count
them: onebiscuit, two biscuits, three biscuits.
Countable nouns can be singular or plural.
• Uncountable nouns
Milk, tea and bread are examples of uncountable nouns. Hence, we cannot count
them. Wecannot say: a milk, two milks, two breads.

Uncountable nouns are always singular. We do not say one water or two waters,
but we can count such a noun with the following measurements.
1. the number of litres/kilos
2. two kilos of potatoes

The question words ‘which one’ are used to ask somebody to be exact about something or
someonefrom a limited number.
To ask for something in a certain amount, use ‘how many’ or ‘how much’ as the question
word. Use ‘many’ when you ask about countable nouns and use ‘much’ when you ask about
uncountable nouns.
USING ‘HOW MANY’ AND ‘HOW MUCH’
We use ‘how many’ and ‘how much’ to ask for something in a certain amount. We use ‘how
many’ to ask about countable nouns.
We use ‘how much’ to ask about uncountable nouns.
