– Istilah
report text sering juga dikenal dengan sebutan informational report. Report,
dalam Concise Oxford Dictionary Edisi 10, diartikan sebagai 1) an account
given of a matter after investigation or consideration. 2) a piece of information
about an event or situation. Jika disimpulkan, secara bahasa report text
adalah teks yang berfungsi untuk memberikan informasi tentang suatu
peristiwa atau situasi, setelah diadakannya investigasi dan melalui berbagai
pertimbangan.

Definisi report text ini juga hampir mirip dengan apa yang sering disebutkan
dalam berbagai buku bahasa Inggris di tingkat menengah, “Report is a text
which present information about something, as it is. It is as a result of
systematic observation and analyses.”

Dengan demikian, sebenarnya teks report dan descriptive mempunyai

perbedaan yang cukup jelas, meski nampak keduanya dikatakan sebagai
“saudara kembar” sekalipun. Intinya, dalam report text itu biasanya berisi
dengan fakta-fakta yang bisa dibuktikan secara ilmiah.

Pengertian Report Text
Teks report adalah suatu jenis teks yang menggambarkan/mendeskripsikan
suatu bentuk, ciri atau sifat umum “general” benda, hewan, tumbuh-
tumbuhan, manusia atau peristiwa, teks report atau report text mempunyai
bentuk yang serupa dengan descriptive text. Pada umumnya siswa
mengalami kesulitan dalam membedakan antara kedua jenis teks tersebut,
walaupun serupa dengan report text, bukan berarti sama.

Teks ini berbeda dengan teks Deskripsi memiliki fungsi dalam memberikan
uraian akan suatu benda tertentu dan tidak dimaksudkan untuk
menjeneralisasi, hal itu sehingga jenis teks ini digunakan hampir terdapat
dalam keseluruhan mata pelajaran lain, kemampuan membuat dan
memahami jenis teks ini merupakan bagian penting dari perkembangan
kemampuan literasi di sekolah.

Tujuan Report Text

Selain dari pada contoh report text yang membantu untuk mengetahui
maksud dari report text juga terdapat beberapa pakar/para ahli menyebutkan
ataupun menyampaikan akan gagasannya mengenai tujuan report text,
adapun tujuan report text ialah sebagai berikut:

 Tujuan teks report ialah untuk menyampaikan informasi hasil

pengamatan dan analisa yang sistematis.
  Tujuan report text selain itu, untuk informasi yang dijelaskan dalam
report text pada umumnya bersifat umum, baik itu alamiah ataupun juga
secara buatan. Contohnya seperti binatang mamalia, transportasi,
bebatuan, negara bagian, tumbuh-tumbuhan, planet dan budaya atau
sebagainya.

Ciri-Ciri Report Text

Report text merupakan salah satu dari ke-13 jenis teks dalam bahasa Inggris
yang menghadirkan informasi. Ciri kebahasan “language feature” dalam
report text menggunakan present tense. Dengan kata lain teks report
menjelaskan what something is like, something in detail and scientifically, the
way things are with reference, what phenomenon under discussion is.

Sebagai suatu cara dalammembedakan dengan jenis teks lainnya ialah dapat
dengan merujuk ciri atau karakteristik report text, adapun ciri-ciri report text
ialah:

 Umumnya menggunakan bahasa ilmiah.

 Report text didominasi oleh simple present tense.
 Judulnya akan terlihat umum, contohnya playing footbal dan bukan
Manchester Football Club.
 Pada umumnya terdapat gambar ataupun data statistik yang
didalamnya terdapat diagram ataupun peta sebagai bentuk dalam
menyakinkan bahwa hasil penelitiannya dilakukannya secara ilmiah.

Sebagai contoh, siswa diberikan tugas membuat teks report akan tentang
bank, sehingga siswa memerlukan pengamatan dan juga membandingkan
sebuah bank dengan bank lainnya yang mempunyai keunggulan yang sama
sehingga dapat disebut, siswa bukan menjelaskan satu bank, tapi beberapa
bank lainnya sehingga dapat bermanfaat, kelemahan dan keunggulan.

Generic Structure Report Text

Seperti halnya dengan descriptive text, Report text juga hanya memiliki dua
struktur umum [generic structure] yaitu :

1. General Clasification; Pernyataan umum yang menerangkan subjek

laporan, keterangan, dan klasifikasinya.
2. Description: tells what the phenomenon under discussion ; in terms of
parts, qualities, habits or behaviors; Pada bagian ini biasanya
memberikan gambaran fenomena-fenomena yang terjadi; baik bagian-
bagiannya, sifat-sifatnya, kebiasaannya, ataupun tingkah lakunya.
Intinya adalah penjabaran dari klasifikasi yang disajikan dengan ilmiah.

Ada juga beberapa keterangan mengenai generic structure report text, yang
meliputi :

2. Bundles of Specific Information

General information adalah bagian yang menyebutkan informasi umum dari

tema tulisan yang. Sedangkan Bundles of specific information, adalah
penjabaran dari informasi umum tersebut.
Saya sendiri lebih cenderung setuju dengan generic structure kedua; karena
hal ini bisa membuat siswa lebih paham akan cara menulis report text.

Pola Tata Bahasa Dalam Report Text

Setiap tulisan mempunyai ciri bahasa tersendiri seperti halnya dengan jenis
teks recount text dan narrative text yang kerap mempunyai ciri tata bahasa
atau pola bahasa menggunakan simple past.
Selain jenis teks tersebut juga berlaku dengan repor text yang memiliki tata
bahasa tersendiri dalam penyusunannya, demikian ini mampu untuk
menjawab pertanyaan bagaimana cara membuat report text. Olehnya itu, pola
grammar yang umum digunakan dalam teks report diantaranya:

 Use of general nouns, eg hunting dogs, rather than particular nouns, eg

Keterangan Pola Tata Bahasa Dalam Report Text

 General nouns, maksudnya ialah suatu benda “baik itu hidup atau mati”
yang bersifat umum. Coba bandingkan : Hunting dogs >< My dog,
hunting dogs bersifat umum, sedangkan my dog bersifat khusus.
 Relating verbs, dalam grammar disebut juga dengan linking verbs,
seperti to be “is, am, are: present”, seem, look, taste dan lain
sebagainya.
 Timeless present tense ialah salah satu penanda waktu dalam simple
present seperti “often, usually, always, dan lain-lain.
 Technical terms, maksudnya ialah istilah-istilah yang meliputi teks
report tersebut, misalnya tentang “music” maka istilah-istilah musik
harus.

Contoh Report Text : Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day is a celebration of harvest, thankfulness for
peace, and the attempt of Native Americans. It is usually celebrated in late
autumn.
In the past, Thanksgiving was celebrated for their rich harvest in New
England. In North America, however, it was originally held to thank God for
their survival in the new land which was not easy for them. However, in
Canada, it had been celebrated as in New England. Thanksgiving now is
celebrated in United States of America and in Canada. Thanksgiving festivals
are held every fourth Thursday of November in the U.S and on the second
Monday of October in Canada. It is usually celebrated in four to five days in
the North America and for three days in Canada.

It is celebrated through families and friends gathering to eat and give good
luck. Turkey is the main dish in the thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving parades
are also usually held. In Thanksgiving homes are decorated with wreaths,
fresh and dried flowers. Lamps are lighted to brighten the environment. Tables
are decorated with best china and antique silver dishes to mark the occasion.

 Venice Pictures – Reporting Venice

Venice is a city in northern Italy. It is the capital of region Veneto. Together

with Padua, the city is included in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area.
Venice has been known as the “Queen of the Adriatic”, “City of Water”, “City
of Bridges”, and “The City of Light”. The city stretches across 117 small
islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast
Italy.
Venice is world-famous for its canals. It is built on an archipelago of 117
islands formed by about 150 canals in a shallow lagoon. The islands on which
the city is built are connected by about 400 bridges. In the old center, the
canals serve the function of roads, and every form of transport is on water or
on foot.

You can ride gondola there. It is the classical Venetian boat which nowadays
is mostly used for tourists, or for weddings, funerals, or other ceremonies.
Now, most Venetians travel by motorised waterbuses (“vaporetti”) which ply
regular routes along the major canals and between the city’s islands. The city
also has many private boats. The only gondolas still in common use by
Venetians are the traghetti, foot passenger ferries crossing the Grand Canal
at certain points without bridges.

You can see the amusing city’s landmarks such as Piazza San Marco,

like stars. Tall stars called Fruji grow everywhere The Fruji tress have purple
leaves at the top and yellow fruit all over them. When a fruit falls off, another
tree grows in a minute.

The Weather on Wingo Island is very hot but at twelve o’clock, everyday, it
rains. Sometimes, there are windstorms. They happen when too many
animals fly around at the same time.
People who stay on Wingo Island sleep in a big-gloo. It is like an igloo but it is
on long poles. It has a ladder to get up and a slide to come down. The big-
gloo has a moss bed, chairs, and tables that are made of Fruji tress.
There is no television on Wingo Island. So is the telephone and computer. It is
place to listen to the leaves whispering. It is a place to lie on soft green moss
and look at the clouds. It is really a place to dream.

Report Text adalah teks yang mendeskripsikan sesuatu atau benda-benda secara umum, contohnya
berbagai benda atau fenomena alam, buatan dan sosial yang ada atau terjadi di lingkungan kita.
Teks report mengupas suatu hasil pengamatan, penelaahan, penelitian, observasi, atau study
tentang benda atau binatang, orang atau tempat. 

Report Text hampir sama dengan Descriptive Text yang membedakan adalah objek yang

diceritakan berbentuk jamak, sedangkan objek yang diceritakan pada Descriptive Text berbentuk
tunggal. 

Generic Structure Report Text adalah :

1. General classification (Klasifikasi umum) : pengantar tentang sesuatu atau fenomena yang akan
dibahas.
2. Description (Deskripsi) : menerangkan sesuatu atau fenomena yang dibahas, meliputi bagian-
bagian, kualitas dan perilaku.

Ciri-ciri Report Text adalah :

1. Menggunakan pola kalimat Simple Present Tense
2. Menggunakan kata benda umum (general nouns)
3. Menggunakan kata kerja yang saling berhubungan (relating verbs)
4. Terdiri dari sebuah objek ditambah objek tentang alam lainnya.

Contoh Report Text :

 ELEPHANT

Elephant is the largest and strongest of all animals. It is a strange looking animal which it has thick
legs, huge sides and backs, large hanging ears, a small tail, little eyes, long white tusks and above
all, elephant has a long nose, the trunk. An elephant is commonly seen in a zoo, it is hard to find in
its natural habitat.

The trunk is the elephant's peculiar feature. This trunk has various usages. The elephant draws up
water by its trunk and can squirt the water all over its body like a shower bath. The elephant's trunk
also lifts leaves and put them into its mouth. In fact, the trunk serves the elephant as long arm and
hand. An elephant looks very clumsy and heavy and yet an elephant can move very quickly.

The elephant is very intelligent animal. Its intelligence combined with its great strength makes an
elephant a very useful servant to man. Elephant can be trained to serve in various ways such as
carry heavy loads, hunt for tigers and even fight. An elephant is really a smart animal.
