 Bahan bakar adalah bahan-bahan yang digunakan dalam
proses pembakaran. Jika ditinjau menurut asalnya, bahan bakar
digolongkan menjadi tiga golongan, yaitu bahan bakar nabati,
bahan bakar mineral, bahan bakar fosil. Sedangkan ditinjau
menurut bentuknya, bahan bakar dapat dibagi menjadi tiga
kelompok, yaitu bahan bakar berbentuk padat,cair dan gas.
Hingga saat ini bahan bakar cairlah yang merupakan bahan
bakar yang banyak dipergunakan di seluruh dunia. Hal ini
menhingat banyak segi keuntungan yang ada bahan bakar
mineral cair ini sebagian besar dipergunakan untuk keperluan-
keperluan pada motor bakar pembakaran dalam (Internal
Combusition Engine

Pada setiap bahan bakar
mempunyai karateristik
yang berbeda-beda.
Karateristik inilah yang
akan menentukkan sifat-
sifat dalam proses
pembakaran, dimana sifat
yang kurang
menguntungkan dapat
disempurnakan dengan
jalan menambahkan
bahan-bahan kimia
kedalam bahan bakar
tersebut. 3
● Adapun tujuan dari pembakaran bahan
bakar adalah untuk memperoleh energy
yang disebut energy panas. Sisa-sisa
pembakaran didalam motor bakar harus
diperhatikan. Oleh karena itu sisa dari
pembakaran yang kurang sempurna akan
mengandung gas-gas beracun, yang
terutama ditimbulkan oleh pembakaran
pada motor bensin.

 A.Komposisi Bahan Bakar

Saat ini bahan bakar minyak (BBM) masih menjadi sumber

energi terbesar pada kendaraan bermotor. Walaupun
keberadaanya sangat penting namun penggunaannya bisa
berdampak terhadap penurunan kualitas udara dan bisa berefek
terhadap masalah kesehatan anda. Jadi, mengapa hal ini bisa
terjadi? Apakah karena akibat dari kandungan pada bahan
bakar?
Bahan bakar yang biasa anda gunakan mengandung beberapa
senyawa berikut:

● Sulfur.
Kandungan sulfur yang berlebih akan menyebabkan masalah
kerusakan pada mesin. Masalah yang timbul adalah timbulnya
kerak pada mesin dan juga sistem bahan bakar seperti injektor.
Efek yang dapat ditimbulkan adalah terjadinya penurunan
terhadap performa mesin sebagai akibat dari munculnya kerak
pada mesin.

Timbal (Pb).
Timbal memiliki efek negatif pada kendaraan, yaitu
menyebabkan mesin mengeluarkan suara yang kasar,
memperpendek umur busi dan menyebabkan pembakaran yang
tidak sempurna.

Fosfor
Efek fosfor bagi kendaraan adalah mengurangi fungsi dari
katalis yang ada pada sistem exhaust kendaraan,
sehingga emisi yang dihasilkan akan menjadi tinggi

Bahan bakar tersebut digunakan untuk melakukan proses
pembakaran di ruang bakar mesin. Sisa atau limbah dari bahan-
bahan itu sendiri akan membentuk suatu senyawa berupa:

Sulfur Dioksida (SO2)

Senyawa sulfur yang terbakar akan menghasilkan sulfur
dioksida. Efeknya adalah dapat mengganggu kesehatan
manusia terutama sistem pernapasan. Selain itu, sulfur dioksida
dapat menyebabkan hujan asam yang berdampak bagi
lingkungan.

Timbal (Pb)
Timbal merupakan salah satu unsur kimia sebagai polutan
yang paling berbahaya. Timbal merupakan logam yang
sangat berbahaya bagi kesehatan manusia karena
efeknya dapat berlangsung seumur hidup.

Karbon Monoksida (CO)
Karbon monoksida yang dihasilkan oleh kendaraan bermotor akan
memberikan dampak negatif pada kesehatan manusia. Senyawa
ini bersifat mengikat hemoglobin yang membawa oksigen untuk
disebar ke seluruh tubuh. Efeknya adalah suplai oksigen akan
berkurang sehingga dapat menimbulkan gejala sesak napas.

Besarnya kandungan senyawa tersebut dipengaruhi oleh

besarnya Research Octane Number (RON) pada bahan bakar.
Semakin tinggi nilai RON, maka kandungan senyawa tersebut
akan semakin berkurang.
