Objectives : by the end of the lesson student will be able


- to understand the information from the Happy Prince story (comprehension)
- to understand the function of the Happy Prince story
- to identify the vocabulary in the Happy Prince story
- to identify the grammar that is used in narrative text (Happy Prince)
- to determine a theme of the Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde and how it is conveyed
through particular details provide a summary of the story distinct from personal opinions
and judgments.
- to describe how a particular story’s unfold in a series of episodes as well as how the
characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution.
- to cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as
inferences drawn from the text.
- to mention the value of the short story ‘the Happy Prince’ (kindness and care for
other)
- to identify the language features in the narrative (simple past tense, adjective, time
connectives and reported speech)
Duration : 2 x 90 mins (2 meetings)

Materials :

a. Material : Narrative text (the Happy Prince by Oscar Wild , see


attachment 2); a kind of text to tell the story
happened in the past
b. Purpose of the text : to entertain or to amuse the audience
c. Generic structure :
 Title
 Orientation : sets the scene and introduces the participants (answers
the question of who, when, what, where)
 Complication : tells the problems of the story and how the main
characters solve them
 Resolution : is the part in which the crisis is revolved, for the better
or worse
 Re-orientation : is the ending of the story
d. The dominant grammar : past tense (adverb of time, time conjunction, action
verbs, direct speech)
e. The vocabulary :
statue, sapphires, ruby, gilded, courtiers, fanning, feverishly,
Egypt, alive, swallow, pedestal, embroider, ugliness, hilt, grate,
sword, misery, commission, garret, marvellous, seamstress, thimble

f. Language features :
 use of verbs in past forms (was, stood, decided, had, said, fell, lived,

 use of adjectives to build noun groups to describe the people, animals
or things in the story; (beautiful, little, thirsty, lazy, cool, curious,

 use of time connectives and conjunctions to sequence events through

Activity : Using the short story ‘the Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde’ I want to teach
about Narrative text, reported speech, literature review. The skill will be reading to writing.

OPENING

 The teacher (T) greets students (Ss) by saying “Hello class, how was your morning?”
 T asks one of the S to lead a prayer.
 T checks the roll.
 T tells Ss what they will do today.

MAIN ACTIVITY

1. BKOF
 T asks the S about kindness.
 Ss brainstorm the idea of kindness. (see attachment 1)
 T shows the picture of the Happy Prince book cover and asks what the S think.

 Ss give comment on the picture and guess the story.


2. Modelling of the text (1st meeting)
 T introduces the story by giving the student the handout with vocabulary builder.

 The teacher makes sure that all of the students have got the copy by saying “has
each of you got a copy of the text?”
 Students read the story.
 The teacher ask the student, “has everyone finished reading?”
 In groups of three Ss answer the question about the Happy Prince. (see attachment
2)
 In pairs, the students analyse the story. ( the characters, settings and plots )
 Students share the information about the story, like the characters, settings, and the
plots of the story.
 Together, T and Ss discuss their answer.
1. Characters :
a. The Happy Prince : kind, want to help other, beautiful statue,
b. The Swallow : curious, stubborn bird who eventually became kind
and faithful

2. Settings :
a. Place : in town
b. Time : fall and winter

3. Plots:
c. How the story began : the swallow met the Happy Prince. Because of the
swallow’s curiousness, he stayed by the prince and helped the prince
delivered help for the town people in need.
d. Problems/climax : the Prince had nothing to give to the poor child, so,
he decided to give his golden leaf and left him with nothing beautiful..
e. How the story ended : the Major and the Councillors discovered the ugly
statue, issuing a proclamation as well as pulling down the statue of the
Happy Prince. However, when they furnace the statue, the lead broken heart
wouldn’t melt and they threw it away. God have different plan, the swallow
will sing in the paradise and the happy prince shall praise the god in the city
of gold.

 The teacher explains the function of Narrative text ; to entertain the reader.
 T asks Ss to find the adjective from the first page of the story (see attachment 5)
 Ss find the adjectives;
High above the city, on a tall column, stood the statue of the Happy Prince. He
was gilded all over with thin leaves of fine gold, for eyes he had two bright
sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword hilt. One night there flew over
the city a little swallow. His friends had gone away to Egypt six weeks before, but
he had stayed behind; then he decided to go to Egypt too. All day long he flew, and
at night time he arrived at the city. “Where shall I put up?” he said. “I hope the
town has made preparations.” Then he saw the statue on the tall column. “I will put
up there,” he cried. “It is a fine position with plenty of fresh air.” So he alighted
just between the feet of the Happy Prince. “I have a golden bed-room,” he said
softly to himself as he looked round,
3. Modelling of the text ( 2nd meeting)
 The Teacher continue last meeting lesson. T explains about the verb used in the
story ; simple past tense. Using the second page of the story, Ss identify the verb.
 T give students task to change the words into the past form.
 T asks the students to find the direct and indirect speech in the story.
 Students identify it then do the task. (see attachment 3)

4. Joint Construction/ independent construction


 T asks Ss to write their comments on the story and write another ending for the
story using the guiding questions. (see attachment 4)

CLOSING
 The teacher summarize what they have learnt today and explain nextlesson briefly
 The teacher dismisses the class.
