membran (Hansung et al. 2004, Jari et al. 2001, Tien et al.
2003, Djilali et al. 2002, Fuller et al. 1993, Baschuk 2000).
Nilai porositas sangat mempengaruhi rintangan listrik dalam
sel bahan bakar (Walt Pyle 1993, Siegel et al. 2003). Nilai
elektroda (Huang et al. 2000, Nam et al. 2003, Litster et al.
menurunkan prestasi MEA (Lister et al. 2004, Yoshitake et
al. 2002.). Berbagai penelitian telah dilakukan untuk
mengurangkan ketebalan dan keperluan katalisator Pt mgcm-
2
(Grujicic 2003, Lean 2003). Dengan keterangan yang sama
juga, Naoki (1997) dan Deriver (2005) telah menjelaskan
bahawa untuk mengoptimuman prestasi MEA dan
pengetahuan yang ada adalah sangat penting. Sui et al.
(1999) telah menyatakan hubungan parameter yang lebih
lengkap.
Pembuatan MEA meliputi komposisi lapisan
elektrokatalis, keadaan penekanan-panas, keadaan
pengeringan dan waktu proses dijalankan. Beberapa
hubungan pembuatan elektrokatalis dengan parameter yang
kritis seperti parameter porositas dan ketebalan lapisan
elektrokatalis perlu dikaitkan. Selain itu, pengaruh
kandungan elektrolit sangat berpengaruh pada model
parameter. Oleh karena parameter ini terlalu banyak dan
kompleks, banyak peneliti hanya memfokuskan kerjanya
untuk beberapa parameter saja untuk menghindari
komplikasi pada model.
Rujukan

Porositas layer
Pada kajian penelitian berkenaan pemindahan massa dalam
MEA melalui porositas semakin pesat. Porositas ini
dipengaruhi teknik pembuatan.

ketebalan 75μ. Sepanjang proses pembuatan elektrokatalis,
larutan elektrolit melalui membran dan mengendap ketika
bertemu dengan karbon penghantar listrik. Proses
pengendapkan elektrokatalis terjadi ada aliran proton dan
elektron secara serentak. Dengan metode ini mereka mampu
menghasilkan muatan Pt yang rendah. Hasil kerapatan energi
yang diperoleh dengan muatan Pt 4 mgcm -2 adalah 158
mWcm-2 pada kerapatan arus 200 macm-2. Dalam PEM Fuel
Cell, membran elektrolit polimer padat tipis gunanya
menghambat aliran gas antara kedua elektroda dan
transportasi proton. Transfer Proton dalam elektrolit polimer
padat ada dua mekanisme utama yaitu proton masih
dilindungi oleh densitas elektron, sehingga efek keberadaan
proton tidak nyata. Kasus yang paling umum, proton migrasi
membutuhkan dinamika translasi spesies yang lebih besar.

Metode Fabrikasi
Proses fabrikasi Membrane-Electrode-Assembly
Membrane. (3) Spraying bertindak bagi menghasilkan
struktur MEA (Anode-Membran-Katode). (4) Pressing
bertindak bagi ‘setting’ mikrostruktur daripadaMEA dan
laminating electrode pada Membran. (5) Draying bertindak
bagi menghasilkan liang iaitu ‘micropore, mesopore and
micropore’ daripada mikrostruktur Anode-Membran-Katode.
(6) Timbalbalas membran dengan H2SO4 bagi ‘deionized
water’ sehingga memperolehi MEA aktif. Cirian
membuat sel bahan bakar sejak tahun 2002.

Sebelum semburan dilakukan, perlu menghasilkan
mengira Karbon-Pt digunakan Waight Meter. Mixing

INTRODUCTION
EXPERIMENTAL
Electrode Preparation
The catalyst was prepared from platinum-supported carbon black and
Teflon coated the Gas Diffusion Layer. Finally, the electrode was baked at 200 oC
for 20 min (Iyuke et. al., 2003).
Analytical Methods
The porosity of the GDL electrode will be analyzed by BET and the
thickness of Diffusion Layer by SEM. The performance characteristics of the
MEA are evaluated using the fuel cell test station. The MEA was sandwiched
between catalyst ink carbon cloth and then installed in a single cell test with two
current collectors. The current collectors were made from stainlees steel plates
which contained gas feed inlets and outlets, and rib-channels for gas flow. The
cell was compressed between two copper end-plates. The cell was held together
between a cryclic plates by means of a set of eight retaining bolts positioned at
the periphery of the cell. The fuel cell test station consisted of temperature
controllers, flow meters and an externel humidifier was used evaluate the
performance of the single cells. The active electrode area of 100 cm 2 was used
(10x10 cm) and operated at 80oC using H2/O2 and H2O as himidifier.

TEORI
- Lapisan elektrod dari MEA dibuat dari kumpulan
partikel Pt-C yang memiliki liang (micropore,
mesopore dan macropore) tertentu bagi membentuk
channel dan tebal MEA sangat mempengaruhi
jumlah elektrik.
- Pt-Carbon (anode) bertindak balas dengan H2 bagi
menghasilkan 2H+ dan 2e. Elektron ini melalui hole
dari karbon (semikonduktor), Pt dan wayer (circuit
external). H2 dan H+ juga melalui channel daripada
liang karbon dan melalui membran untuk
bertindakbalas dengan O2 daripada Pt-carbon
(katode). Hidrogen memerlukan channel yang
purata untuk pemindahan massa dan tempat
bertindakbalas pada elektrode. Jumlah electron yang
boleh menjadi elektrik daripada MEA bergantung
kepada tebal dan channel yang dibentuk MEA
tersebut. Kemudian tebal dan liang daripada MEA
tersebut akan berubah dengan perubahan daripada
pembolehubah proses fabrikasi MEA
- Katoda memiliki channel daripada liang bertindak
sebagai diffuser, pemangkin dan konduktor. Semakin
tebal daripada electrode ini maka kapasitansi (
.A
C ) akan meningkat sehingga tenaga elektrik
d
semakin kecil sehingga current density (JA) semakin
besar dan keperluan daripada Pt semakin kecil.
Dengan rekabentuk ini, setiap gram Pt boleh
memperolehi tenaga elektrik yang boleh lebih tinggi
berbanding dengan yang lain pada jadual satu. Oleh
itu, perlu dikaji modeling electrode sebagai referensi
fabrikasi.
- Bagi memperolehi peningkatan daripada keluasan
permukaan gram Pt per satu centimeter kuasa dua
akan digunakan konsep berikut ini.. karbon activ
memiliki energy adsorption tinggi ( Do and Wang ,
1998). Karbon boleh adsorpsi acid dye yang
mengandung metal (less than 44 micron opening size
325 mesh) (Tsai, 2001) dan Pore size activated
carbon boleh modification dengan polymer menjadi
carbon active moleculer sieve (Moreira at al. ,2001),
solution. Liang carbon activ mempunyai micropore
(< 2 nm diameter), mesopore (5-50 nm diameter) dan
macropore ( > 50 nm diameter) atau memiliki
spesifik areas 200 - 1200 m2 /g (Ruthven, 1997)
sedangkan physical diameter H2 3,464 A o , H+ 2,684
(Michaelides, 1998) dan diameter Pt 10Ao dan Ru
8,3 Ao( Yarwood,1976). Benda ini boleh masuk dalam
liang carbon untuk meningkatkan surface area.
Mengatur liang dengan pemanasan atau
pengeringan MEA sehingga memperolehi liang
karbon purata iaitu micropore, mesopore dan
macropore. Dengan konsep tersebut,
electrokinetic permeability pada MEA akan lebih
besar lagi menurunkan (to reduction)
consentration mg Pt/ cm 2 dari pada pemangkin
dan jua akan meningkatkan current density x
area of anode and cathode and total consentrasi at
the anode side and cathode
- Analitikal Hasil daripada Proses Fabrikasi MEA.
Spesification MEA ini, bergantung kepada optimation
daripada pembolehubah proses fabrikasi MEA. Oleh
itu, perkara analitikal yang utama untuk keperluan
optimasi tersebut akan dibentangkan hubung kait
daripada. Hasil daripada proses fabrikasi tersebut
akan diberbandingkan dengan hasil fabrikasi
pada jadual 1
DISCUTION
Pada rajah 1 dan 2. electrode 10 % dan 20 %
memiliki micropore Micro Pore Area 1.104E+01 m²/g, Micro
Makmal Pusat Pengajian Fuel Cell (PPFC) UKM . Menurut
Ruthven (1997) bagi karbon aktif memiliki micropore area
200-1200 m2/g. Dengan demikian pengurangan daripada
micropore area electrode disebabkan polimer pengikat.
rajah 3. Karena physical diameter H2 ialah 3.464 A o, H+
2,684 (Michaelides, 1998) masih lebih kecil daripada
daripada diameter pore karbon. Jika polimer ditambah ini
bermakna pore radius daripada elektroda akan berkurang
akan tetapi bila ditambah polimer maka radius pore akan
berkurang. Jika penambahan dilanjutkan sampai radius pore
disebabkan oleh tenaga serapan (Do and Wang, 1998) tetapi
diameter micropore. Surface area Pt(m2/g) pada permukaan
diukur dengan kaedah SEM. Dari pada rajah 2 kadar Pt
semakin meningkat diikuti oleh pemalar luas permukaan Pt
semakin meningkat. Kes ini bermakna bahawa pada
operasional PEM terjadi peningkatkan density current.
PEM menurun. Dalam beberapa kajian fabrikasi misalnya
Shahinpoor (2001). Ia menggunakan ionik polymer-metal
composit dengan metode chemical proses. Dalam
penyelidikan, beliau melakukan komposit pemangkin pada
membrane. Persoalan yang timbul adalah electrode koyak
kerana partikel Pt memiliki ukuran 40 sampai 60 nm Kes ini
dapat di informasikan SEM dengan baik.

1. INTRODUCTION
Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEA) is the core
component of fuel cell. It consists of the electrolyte
membrane, anode and cathode electrodes. The
electrochemical reactions occur when a fuel and oxidant are
applied to the anode and cathode sides of the MEA. There
are several fabrication methods of MEA were reported, such
as rolling, screen-printing, casting, and spraying. Each of
these types produces different MEA’s structure. One of the
recent researches in sprayer as what we interested in our
laboratory, used one or multi nozzle (Blore at al., 2002, Jun,
2001, Chun, 2001). The most important parameter in MEA is
the water flux, usually named as water transport
phenomenon. The water flux itself depends on electro –
osmotic behavior, diffusion and permeability coefficient, and
proton movement (Eikerling, 1998, Hu, 2004). Some of
researchers have approached the water transport
phenomenon in one, two and three dimensional (Hu, 2004,
Jun,2001, Chen, 2003). Based on the mechanism of
hydrogen bridge within membrane (Bansal,1998), we
observed that the water flux is pressure dependent. The
balancing of humidity has to be insured with avoiding the
floods of water and dehydration that will cause an ohmic
lost. The minimizing of ohmic lost was suggested by many
researcher by achieving various composition of materials and
reconstruction of pore size of diffusion layer of electrode. In
this research, we observed the permeability coefficient of
MEA by setting the slope of water flux in a certain value.
2. METHODOLOGY
MEA consists of three component Gas Diffusion Layer
(GDL), Gas Diffusion Electrode (GDE), and membrane. The
fabrication process of GDL and GDE was made using in-
house robotic sprayer machine adopted the Chun’s method
(2001). The permeability coefficient of the fabricated
electrodes was characterized. We are assuming the water
mass transfer represents by the simplest equation as follows
(Midleman, 1997, Muider, 1991, Baker,200, Frank,2004):

For GDL, the water flux will be affected by channel that has
been built within the carbon cloth (see Fig. 3a), meanwhile
the water flux inside the electrode will be affected by
channel that has been built by the mesopore.
Figure 3c illustrates good profile of pore within membrane to
make possible water flux flow through it. Such kinds of
pore profile are usually called as porosity and tortuosity. To
build better understand about what we mentioned above, we
will explain more detail about the capability of MEA to flow
water flux as follow
N 3.10 4 Peff
(2)
N 10 4 Peff
(3)
N 2.10 4 Peff
(4)
Eq. (2) is developed from eq. (1) with for about 3.10-4
gcm-1men–1psia-1 that has been found using Figure 4, and
Peff indicates the pressure differences of water flux.
Using tortuosity table we got 1.1 for 3.10-4 permeability
coefficient. It means that the length of channel for flowing
water within GDL is greater than the thickness of GDL itself.
Furthermore, for calculating the capability of electrode to
flow water follows eq. (3) as shown in Figure 4b. With 10-4
gcm-1men–1psia-1 of permeability coefficient it is similar with
1.7 tortuosity. It also means that the channel for flowing
water within electrode greater than the thickness of electrode
itself. From the calculation of water flux as mentioned
above, we could emphasize that the flow resistance of water
within electrode is greater than within GDL. It means that
GDL is capable to distribute and evacuate water easier and
electrode could flow in or out water faster.

diffusivity dikalikan dengan perubahan pressure hydrogen setebal
GDL(Do, 1998). This gas will be reaction at surface area pore
carbon-platinum to produce electron and proton. Pada GDE nilai
daripada arus elektrik sangat tergantung daripada nilai parameter
koefisien difusi. Semakin besar nilainya maka semakin besar pula
arus elektriknya.
From this, each of pore GDL atau GDE dan
MEA pada table 1 will produce cell potential yang berbeda . Base
on experiment and design data of cell potential on table 1 will
show profil of performance polarization fuel cell like figur 4. In
figur, each of diffusivity GDL, GDE(ETEK) dan MEA(com.)
having 1.43x 10 126 m2s-1, 5.49e-12 m2s-1dan 4.29 e-12 m2s-.

Rajah 3.1 Lapisan-lapisan dalam SBA
LA
Struktur lapisan ini boleh dikaitkan dengan (1) ketebalan, (2)
keliangan, (3) diameter liang dan (4) luas permukaan (Beal
et al. 2004, Schulze et al. 2004, Song et al. 2001, Tien et al.
keliangan GDL sangat mempengaruhi prestasi MEA. Model
keliangan meliputi model keliangan malar, fungsi linear,
fungsi eksponen konvek dan konkaf terhadap ketebalan
(Hisin et al. 2002, Kuroda et al. 2002 ). Keliangan
membran (Hansung et al. 2004, Tien et al. 2003, Djilali
2002, Jari et al. 2001, Baschuk et al. 2000, Fuller et al.
1993). Nilai keliangan sangat mempengaruhi pengagihan
gas, kelembapan dalam EA (Prasanna et al. 2004, Ge et al.
2003, Torsten et al. 2002, Merida et al. 1999) dan rintangan
elektrik dalam SBA (Siegel et al. 2004, Soshi et al. 2003).
Nilai luas permukaan spesifik sangat mempengaruhi jumlah
(Atilla et al. 2005, Denver et al. 2005, Ruy et al. 2005,
Litster et al. 2004, Nam et al. 2003, Huang et al. 2000).
Nilai ketebalan, keliangan dan luas permukaan
mangkin akan mempengaruhi prestasi SBA. Sebagai contoh,
prestasi lengkuk kekutuban MEA yang diselidiki adalah
seperti Rajah 3.2. Ianya meliputi perbezaan antara prestasi
lengkuk kekutuban lapisan A dengan lapisan B (Gasteiger et
al. 2004, Grujicic 2004). Prestasi lengkuk kekutuban SBA
tersebut dipengaruhi oleh keadaan pengoperasian SBA dan
struktur MEA yang dibuat melalui alat ujikaji spesifik (Ruy
et al. 2005). Apabila keadaan pengoperasian SBA ditetapkan,
alat ujikaji semasa membikin lapisan MEA seperti ketebalan
berbanding prestasi lapisan B. Berdasarkan kajian literatur,
apabila ketebalan E pada GDE meningkat, maka
peningkatkan prestasi lengkuk kekutuban lapisan A akan
berlaku.
semakin tinggi sehingga meningkatkan prestasi lengkuk
kekutuban tersebut (Lister et al. 2004, Tien et al. 2003,
Escudero et al. 2002,).
Peningkatan keliangan lapisan E dalam GDE akan
meningkatkan ketumpatan arus (Soler et al. 2003). Demikian
Apabila nilai parameter ketebalan, keliangan, diameter liang
dan keluasan mangkin diplot seperti Rajah 3.3, suatu kaitan
yang menghubungkan antara parameter-parameter tersebut
dapat diperhatikan. Pada suatu nilai ketebalan tertentu,
keliangan, diameter liang dan luas permukaan akan
menunjukkan suatu nilai tertentu (Cha 1999).
