12. DEFINITION
A conditional sentence is a sentence discussing the factual implications and their consequences. It
expresses a result, which is expected based on a condition. A conditional sentence consists of two
clauses, a main clause and if-clause. The main clause shows an expected result. The expected result can
be real or unreal. While, the if-clause explains the condition. Generally, it is begun with the word if. The
main clause in the conditional sentences can be in the affirmative, negative, or interrogative forms.

A real conditional sentence expresses that something mentioned in the if-clause will probably
happen in the present or in the future.
In the real conditional sentence, the main clause is stated in the Simple Future Tense and the verb in
the if-clause in in the Simple Present Tense too. (See the sentences 1 and 2 in the Frame.)
Examples:
In the unreal conditional sentences, the main clause is in the form of Past Future Tense. The verb in the
if-clause is in the Simple Past Tense. See the sentences 3 and 4 in the Frame.
A present unreal conditional sentence (Type 2) shows that there isn’t a possibility for someone to bring
what she/he expected into reality. So, it shows an imagination only because it is in contradiction with
the reality which happens at present.
Examples:
• If Farida had a car, she would come home early.
Fact: Farida doesn’t have a car.
• If I had wings, I would go wherever I want.
Fact: I don’t have wings I am human.
• If Aldy studied hard, he would not fail in the exam.
Fact: Aldy doesn’t study so he failed in the exam.
In the unreal present conditional sentences (Type 2), we use were for all subjects if the verbs of the
sentence is be.

Examples:
If Indra were a racer, he would participate in Moto GP racing
Fact: Indra is not a racer. He is a student.
If the car were bigger, I would take him too.
Fact: The car is small. So I don’t take him.
If I were thinner, I could enter the small door more easily.
Fact: I am overweight. I can’t enter small door easily.
Notice!
Dalam conditional sentence tipe 2, semua subjek baik itu tunggal atau jamak semuanya
menggunakan were. Jadi was sama sekali tidak dipakai ya.
