KARAMEL, berwarna coklat gelap dan merupakan hasil dari hidrolisis (pemecahan) karbohidrat, gula pasir,
laktosa dan sirup malt. Karamel terdiri dari 3 jenis, yaitu karamel tahan asam yang sering digunakan untuk
minuman berkarbonat, karamel cair untuk roti dan biskuit, serta karamel kering. Gula kelapa yang selain
berfungsi sebagai pemanis, juga memberikan warna merah kecoklatan pada minuman es kelapa ataupun es
cendol.
Pembuatan bahan warna alami sebenarnya sangatlah mudah. Bahan-bahan yang dapat digunakan sebagai
pewarna alami ditumbuk, dapat pula menggunakan blender atau penumbuk biasa dengan sedikit ditambah air,
lalu diperas dan saring dengan alat penyaring. Agar warnanya cerah dapat ditambahkan sedikit air kapur atau
air jeruk nipis. Setelah diperoleh air perasan pewarna, lalu disimpan di dalam lemari es atau freezer jika
menginginkan disimpan lebih lama.
Pewarnaan alami membuat warna pada kain menjadi tahan lama dan menjadikan kain lebih mahal. Pewarna
alami dapat diperoleh dari tumbuhan yang berasal dari akar, batang, biji, daun, buah, kulit dan bunganya.
Berikut 15 pewarna alami yang sering dipakai pada kain:
Tarum atau tom merupakan tanaman khas dari Indonesia bagian barat. Warna alami yang dihasilkan oleh
tarum adalah warna biru, warna tersebut diperoleh dari rendaman daun tarum dalam jumlah yang banyak
selama semalam. Air rendamannya kemudian direbus dan dikeringkan setelah itu barulah pewarna alami ini
dapat digunakan sebagai pewarna kain. Tanaman ini dibudidayakan dengan cara stek, Bila setek telah
mencapai 14-18 hari akan tumbuh tunas, dan pada usia empat bulan mulai dapat dipetik daunnya dan dapat
langsung dijual kepada pengolah tarum untuk dibuat zat pewarna.
2. Pinang (Areca Cathecu)
Pinang adalah tanaman yang banyak tersebar di berbagai daerah Indonesia. Warna alami yang dihasilkan oleh
pinang adalah warna merah, warna tersebut diperoleh dari tumbukkan halus biji buah pinang tua. Tanaman ini
dibudidayakan dengan cara ditanam, penanamannya membutuhkan waktu yang lama, karena tumbuhan ini
seperti pohon kelapa, maka dari itu tanaman ini baru dapat dimanfaatkan apabila tanaman ini sudah cukup
besar.
The safflower atau saron atau bunga kuma-kuma merupakan tanaman yang berasal dari Asia Barat Daya.
Warna alami yang dihasilkan dari bunga kuma-kuma yaitu kuning keemasan, yang dapat dijadikan sebagai
pewarna alami pada kain.
Tumbuhan yang termasuk dalam tumbuhan perdu ini banyak dimanfaatkan orang sebagai pewarna alami baik
untuk makanan maupun textile. Warna alami yang dihasilkan dari tumbuhan ini yaitu warna hijau. Warna
tersebut diperoleh dengan cara menumbuk halus daun suji kemudian diberi air dan didiamkan selama
semalam. Tanaman ini dapat dibudidayakan dengan cara okulasi, selain akan menghasilkan bibit yang baik
juga mudah cara pembibitannya.
6. Kulit manggis (Garcinia mangostana)
Merupakan tanaman asli dari Asia Tenggara, tepatnya semenanjung Malaya. Tetapi saat ini tanaman manggis
banyak tumbuh di Negara-negara tropis. Kebanyakan orang mengenal manggis karena buahnya yang enak,
tetapi tahukah kamu kalau kulit buah manggis dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai pewarna alami?ya, warna alami
yang dihasilkan dari kulit manggis yaitu biru, ungu dan merah. Warna alami tersebut diperoleh dengan cara
menumbuk halus kulit manggis kemudian bubuk kulit manggis direndam menggunakan etanol dan
dikeringkan.
7. Angsana
Tanaman yang memiliki nama lain sonokembang ini termasuk tanaman penghasil kayu berkualitas baik.
Tanaman ini banyak tumbuh di daerah hutan hujan tropika, tetapi sekarang pertumbuhannya semakin
menurun tajam. Warna alami yang dihasilkan oleh kayu angsana yaitu warna merah sedangkan daunnya
berwarna coklat kekuningan. Warna dan motif serat kayunya yang indah kemerah-merahan, menjadikan kayu
sonokembang sebagai kayu pilihan untuk pembuatan mebel, kabinet berkelas tinggi, alat-alat musik, lantai
parket, panil kayu dekoratif, gagang peralatan, dan meja berharga mahal. Pembudidayaannya tidaklah rumit,

8. Kesumba (Bixa Orellana)
Tumbuhan ini termasuk tumbuhan perdu yang berasal dari Amerika tropis. Tahukah anda, kalau tanaman ini
merupakan tanaman untuk pembuatan bahan dasar pewarna lipstick. Warna alami yang dihasilkan dari biji
kesumba yaitu warna merah atau kuning.
Tanaman ini berasal dari Asia Tenggara. Kebanyakan orang memanfaatkan buah ini sebagai tanaman obat.
Tetapi tanaman ini juga dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai pewarna alami. Warna yang dihasilkan dari akar
mengkudu ini yaitu warna merah kecoklatan.
10. Secang (Caesalpinia sappan)
Tanaman perdu yang berasal dari Asia Tenggara banyak ditemukan di Indonesia. Hingga abad
ke 17 kayunya menjadi perdagangan ekspor rempah-rempah ke berbagai dunia. Rebusan dari kayunya yang
memberi warna merah gading banyak dimanfaatkan untuk pengecatan, bahan anyaman, pewarna makanan
dan minuman serta tinta.
Gambir merupakan tanaman khas Indonesia. Gambir yaitu sejenis getah yang telah dikeringkan dari ekstrak
remasan daun dan ranting tumbuhan. Warna merah tua hingga kecoklatan yang dihasilkan dari tumbuhan ini,
menjadikan getah gambir sebagai pewarna alami yang dapat digunakan pada kain.
12. Kulit kayu tingi (Peltophorum pterocarpum)
Tidak diketahui pasti darimana asal tanaman ini, tetapi tanaman ini biasa tumbuh di daerah tropis dan hutan
hujan. Tanaman ini memang dikenal sebagai pewarna alami pada textile. Warna alami yang dihasilkan dari
kulit kayu dan getahnya yaitu merah dan hitam. Selain sebagai pewarna, masyarakat juga memanfaatkan
tanaman ini untuk mengawetkan jala, tikar dan layar perahu. Kayunya dimanfaatkan sebagai batu bara dan
kayu bakar.
Tanaman ini merupakan tanaman asli Asia Tenggara dan penyebarannya hampir di seluruh Asia Tenggara.
Tanaman ini memang sudah banyak dikenal orang sebagai pewarna alami. Warna hitam yang dihasilkan oleh
daun dan kulit kayunya di manfaatkan masyarakat sebagai pewarna alami pada textile dan sebagai warna
tinta. Kayunya menghasilkan warna kuning kecoklatan hingga warna zaitun dan dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai
pembuatan perahu. Tanaman ini tumbuh subur di daerah pesisir dan dataran rendah.
14. Jati (Tectona grandis)
Kayu jati dikenal sebagai kayu bermutu tinggi. Penyebaran tanaman ini di daerah India, hingga Asia
Tenggara. Kayu jati mengandung semacam minyak dan endapan di dalam sel-sel kayunya, sehingga dapat
awet digunakan di tempat terbuka meski tanpa divernis; apalagi bila dipakai di bawah naungan atap, maka
dari itulah kayu jati dikenal sebagai pembuatan mebel dan kayunya dapat digunakan untuk pembuatan perahu.
Daunnya yang muda dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai pewarna alami. Warna yang dihasilkan dari daun jati yaitu
warna merah kecoklatan.
Tanaman yang mulai langka ini merupakan tanaman buah musiman yang berasal dari Asia Tenggara. Buahnya
yang segar dan sedikit masam banyak disukai oleh masyarakat. Tapi tahukah anda, bahwa tanaman ini juga
dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai pewarna alami. Kayu dan kulit buahnya menghasilkan warna hijau yang dapat
