Salah satu tahapan penting dalam mendesain pipa setelah ditentukan dimensi (diameter) pipa
oleh Process Engineer, adalah menghitung wall thickness / ketebalan pipa. Ketebalan pipa hasil
perhitungan digunakan untuk memilih schedule pipa yang ada di pasaran.

Salah satu Code yang sering menjadi referensi desain piping untuk pembangkit listrik adalah
ASME B31.1 Pressure Piping tentang Power Piping.

Sebelum melangkah lebih jauh ke formula desain ASME B31.1, sebaiknya dicek pipa yang
sedang dikalkulasikan apakah sudah menjadi lingkup ASME B31.1. Hal ini dapat dibaca di
CHapter sope and definition, sederhananya dapat dilihat pada gambar di bawah ini:

Pada gambar dapat dilihat garis pipa di atas dibagi menjadi tiga jenis :

'- Garis biasa, merupakan Piping dan Tubing pada boiler, biasa disebut "Boiler Proper" dan
lingkup total dari Code ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel (ASME BPV) baik dari teknikal maupun
hukum di Amerika.
'- Garis tebal, merupakan Piping dari/ke Boiler biasa disebut "Boiler External Piping" (BEP) masih
menjadi lingkup hukum dari ASME BPV, sedangkan aspek teknikal mengikuti ASME B31.1.
'- GAris putus-putus, merupakan piping yang biasa disebut "Non Boiler External Piping" (NBEP)
dan merupakan lingkup hukum dan teknis dari ASME B31.1.

Kembali ke tema utama, berikut adalah formula untuk menghitung ketebalan pipa (wall
