Types of Conjunction in English

1. Coordinating Conjunction
Coordinating Conjunction memiliki fungsi utama untuk menghubungkan dua buah
klausa dengan konstruksi yang setara. Sedangkan contoh kata-kata penghubung
dengan kategori coordinating conjunction antara lain: so, for, yet, but, and,
or, dan nor.

Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut.

I have a good news and I want to tell it now. (Saya memiliki sebuah berita bagus,
dan saya ingin mengatakannya sekarang)

2. Subordinating Conjuction
Subordination Conjunction pada dasarnya adalah kata penghubung yang
menggabungkan dua buah kalimat bertingkat atau yang memiliki derajat yang tidak
sama. Pada kalimat dengan kata penghubung jenis ini, terdapat induk kalimat dan
anak kalimat yang tidak terpisah.

Adapun Subordinating Conjunction itu sendiri terbagi ke dalam beberapa jenis, yaitu:

Pertama, Cause / Reason (Sebab / Akibat)

Kedua, Condition

Ketiga, Concession

Keempat, Purpose

Kelima, Manner

Dan sebagainya

Faktanya, dalam tata bahasa sehari-hari terdapat beberapa contoh Subordinating

Conjunction yang paling sering kita temukan. Contohnya: after, as soon as, once,
when, whenever, while, although, as, because, in order that, so that, if,
otherwise, as if, dan or else.

Subordinating conjunction yang menggambarkan hubungan waktu: after, as soon as, as

long as, before, once, still, till, until, when, whenever, while.

Perhatikan contoh kalimat dengan Subordinating Conjunction berikut ini.

They work hard because they want to make the headmaster happy. (Mereka bekerja
keras karena mereka ingin membuat kepala sekolah gembira)
3. Correlative Conjunction
Sedangkan Correlative Conjunction penggunaannya biasa dengan cara
berpasangan. Adapun fungsinya adalah untuk menghubungkan klausa, frase,
maupun kata.

Terdapat beberapa contoh Correlative Conjunction yang biasa kita jumpai dalam
kalimat sehari-hari.

Misalnya: both..and, not only…but also, either…or, neither..nor, if..then,

rather..than, between..and, dan sebagainya.

Contoh kalimat dengan Correlative Conjunction :

Sports is not only good for your healthies but also personality. (Olahraga tidak hanya
baik untuk kesehatanmu, melainkan juga kepribadian)

4. Adverbial Conjunction
Jenis kata penghubung yang keempat ialah adverbial conjunction. Kata
penghubung Adverbial Conjunction ini merupakan adverbial phrase atau kata
keterangan yang fungsinya untuk menggabungkan ide dalam satu paragraf.

Sedangkan beberapa contoh kata penghubung yang termasuk ke dalam

kategori Adverbial Conjunction di antaranya: however, furthermore, nevertheless,
moreover, on the other hand.

Perhatikan contoh kalimat berikut.

I am not really interested to this holiday, however I do not have other choice.
