KATA PENGANTAR

Kurikulum 2013 dirancang dan dikembangkan dengan pola pembelajaran yang


berpusat pada peserta didik (students’ centered), interaktif, kritis (critical thinking),
multidisiplin, berbasis tim (teamwork), membentuk jejaring (networking), serta
pendekatan sains (scientific approach).

Melalui proses belajar, peserta didik diharapkan memiliki kompetensi untuk


menghadapi tantangan yang ada pada masa yang akan datang dan mampu
berkompetisi dengan keahlian yang dimilikinya. Oleh karena itu, modul ini disusun
dan disesuaikan untuk terpenuhinya kompetensi.

Modul pembelajaran ini dimaksudkan sebagai salah satu penunjang belajar siswa
dalam mempelajari “Narrative Text‟. Selain teori, modul pembelajaran ini juga
dilengkapi dengan latihan dan tes pada keterampilan berbahasa Listening
(mendengarkan), Reading (membaca), dan Writing (menulis). Kritik dan saran yang
membangun sangat diharapkan untu menyempurnakan modul ini.

BAB I
PENDAHULUAN
A. Deskripsi Modul
Modul pada kelas X SMA ini bertujuan untuk membuka wawasan siswa mengenai LEGEND
dalam Narrative Text dan Ketatabahasaan yang digunakan dalam LEGEND tersebut.

Ciri Umum:
1. Tujuan: memberikan informasi mengenai LEGEND yaitu adalah cerita yang sudah
lama tersebar luas di masyarakat dan diyakini sebagai sebuah sejarah atau dipercaya
sebagai hal yang benar terjadi di masa lalu, umumnya dipercaya karena adanya bukti
peninggalan yang masih tersisa..
2. Ciri-ciri kebahasaan:
- Noun (kata benda) digunakan untuk kata ganti orang, hewan, atau benda dalam
cerita. Contohnya : stepmother, the dwarfs, carriage, dan lain-lain.
- Past tense (kata kerja lampau) dalam narative text menggunakan kata kerja
lampau (verb 2). Contohnya : knew, got, gave, dan lain-lain.
- Time connective adalah kata penghubung waktu guna mengurutkan kejadian.
Contohnya : after, after that, before, dan lain-lain.
- Action verbs merupakan kata kerja yang menunjukan peristiwa atau kegiatan.
Contohnya : stayed, climbed, wrote, dan lain-lain.
- Saying and thinking verb merupakan kata kerja yang menunjukan pelaporan atau
ujaran. Contohnya : said, told, thought, dan lain sebagainya.

B. Prasyarat
Berkaitan dengan pemahaman LEGEND dalam Narrative Texy, siswa hendaknya sudah dapat
memahami penggunaan tata bahasa Simple Past Tense.

C. Petunjuk Penggunaan Modul


1. Penjelasan bagi Siswa
a. Membaca dan memahami materi modul ini secara utuh.
b. Fokuskan pada materi khusus pada masing-masing kegiatan belajar secara cermat.
c. Lakukan latihan sesuai penugasan dan test untuk mengukur tingkat penguasaan pada
masing-masing kegiatan belajar.
d. Setelah menyelesaikan kegiatan pada modul ini peserta didik atau siswa dapat
mengajukan evaluasi akhir, hasil belajar pada guru.

menghasilkan teks fungsional pendek.
2. Mengelaborasi gagasan utama.
3. Membuat draft, merevisi, menyunting teks LEGEND
4. Menghasilkan teks LEGEND

2. Tujuan antara
Setelah mengikuti kegiatan belajar ini, siswa diharapkan dapat:
1. Mengidentifikasi topik dari teks fungsional pendek yang didengar atau dibaca.
2. Mengidentifikasi informasi tertentu dari teks fungsional pendek yang didengar atau
dibaca.
3. Mengidentifikasi tujuan komunikasi dari teks fungsional pendek yang didengar atau
dibaca.

MENGENAL NARRATIVE TEXT (LEGEND)

A. Tujuan Kegiatan Belajar 1.


Agar siswa dapat:
1. Menemukankan fungsi sosial terkait LEGENDA sesuai konteks penggunaannya.
2. Menemukan struktur teks terkait LEGENDA sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya.
3. Menemukan unsur kebahasaan terkait LEGENDA sesuai dengan konteks
penggunaannya.
4. Menelaah struktur teks terkait LEGENDA sesuai konteks penggunaannya.
5. Menelaah unsur kebahasaan teks terkait LEGENDA sesuai dengan konteks

B. Uraian Materi 1
Narrative text merupakan teks yang menceritakan tentang suatu hal yang bersifat fiktif atau
khayalan saja, kisah nyata yang direkayasa, atau pun dongeng. Alur cerita yang disampaikan
memiliki rangkaian peristiwa kronologis yang saling terhubung. Tujuan dari narrative
text adalah untuk menghibur, mendidik, memberitahu, menyampaikan pengalaman pengarang
atau sebagai media mengembangkan imajinasi pembaca. Contoh narrative text seperti cerita
rakyat, dongeng ataupun fabel yang melagenda dari seluruh belahan dunia, walaupun
narrative text umumnya imajinatif, namun beberapa narrative text juga ada yang faktual.

Dalam kompetensi kurikulum bahasa Inggris, peserta didik biasanya dituntut agar dapat
menceritakan sebuah kisah, dongeng ataupun cerita narrative text lainnya ke dalam bentuk
tulisan. Agar dapat memahami narrative text, sebaiknya kita mengenal terlebih dahulu generic
structure pada narrative text.

Generic structure dalam narrative text terdiri dari orientation, complication dan resolution.
1. Orientation, berisikan pengenalan tokoh, tempat dan waktu terjadinya cerita.
2. Complication, berisikan deskripsi mengenai permasalahan yang muncul dan
berkembang
3. Resolution, berisikan akhir dari masalah yang dihadapi, akhir permasalahan dapat
berakhir secara baik “happy ending” ataupun buruk “bad ending”.

Generic Legend of Toba Lake


Structure
Orientation Once upon a time there was a prosperous village in a far away island called
Sumatra. In northern part of the island, lived a farmer whose name was Toba.
He lived alone in a hut by a small forest. He worked on his farmland to grow
rice and vegetables that he sells to local market.

Complication Once day he wanted to catch some fish so he went to a river and fished there.
1 He was very surprised when he got a big fish. The fish was as big as human
being. Soon he went home and put the fish in his kitchen. He planned to cook
the fish for his dinner that night. When he got to his house that afternoon he
took a bath. Then as he walked into his bedroom after taking a bath Toba
was very shocked. Do you want to know what happened?
Resolution There stood in his living room a very beautiful girl. The girl greeted him
1 nicely. For a moment Toba was speechless. When he could control his
emotion he asked her.
‘Who are you? What’s your name? Why suddenly you are here in my
house?’
‘Pardon me if I surprised you Mr. Toba, but you took me here. I was the fish
that you caught in the river. Now that I become a human being again, I
would like to thank you and I will be your servant to express my
thankfulness’
‘Were you the fish?’
‘Yes, I was the fish. Look at your kitchen’.
Toba immediately rushed to his kitchen and the fish was nowhere to be seen.
He saw some gold coins instead.
‘Whose coins are these? Why there are some coins here?’
‘Those coins are mine. As I changed into human being my scales changed
into gold coins’

‘Ok you can live here and work for me. Your room is over there’
‘Thank you very much Mr. Toba’

Complication Since that day the beautiful girl lived in Toba’s house. Since she was very
2 beautiful Toba fell in love with her and not long after that they got married.
The girl married to Toba on one condition that he would never tell anybody
about her past. Toba agreed to the condition. Several months later Toba’s
wife delivered to a baby boy. Their son was healthy. Soon he grew up into a
handsome boy. Toba named him Samosir.

Unfortunately Samosir was a lazy boy. He did not want to work at all. When
his father worked hard in his rice field and farm, Samosir just slept. When he
was awake he talked a lot and he ate a lot. Toba was very disappointed with
his son’s nature. He hoped that one day Samosir would change into a diligent
boy. Day in and day out but Samosir never changed.

Toba used to go to his farm and rice field early in the morning. Then at
midday his wife would bring him food. They used to eat lunch at their farm.
As he was a teenager Toba and his wife tried to change his behavior. They
ordered Samosir to bring food for his father for lunch while her mother
stayed at home to do household chores. But Samosir never did his duty well.
He always woke up very late. He woke up after midday. Then one day his
mother forced him to bring the food.
‘Sam, wake up. Go to the farm and bring the food for your father. He must
be very tired and hungry now’.
But Mom, I am tired and hungry too’
‘What makes you tired? You just wake up. Go now. You father needs the
food’

Toba reluctantly went to the farm. But he did not go to the farm immediately.
He stopped somewhere in the street and ate the food.
Resolution It was already late afternoon when he got to the farm. His father was
2 disappointed. Then he was angry as he realized that his son had eaten his
food. He said sarcastically.
‘O, you are stupid lazy boy. You are son of a fish!’

Complication Samosir was hurt. He went home right away and as he got home he told his
3 mother about his father’s words. Samosir’s mother was shocked. She was
also deeply hurt.

Resolution ‘O Toba. You break your promise so I cannot live with you here anymore.
3 Now you have to accept to consequence of what you did. Samosir, now go to
the hill, find the tallest tree and climb it’
‘Why mom? What will happen?’
‘Just do it, never ask any question. Good bye’

As soon as she finished saying that suddenly the weather changed. Sunny
day suddenly turned into cloudy day. Not long after that the rain poured
heavily. The rain last for several days. Consequently the area was flooded.
The whole area became a big lake. Then it was called Lake Toba and in the

middle of the lake there is an island called Samosir Island. Meanwhile


Toba’s wife disappeared.

Ciri Kebahasaan yang ditemukan pada teks di atas adalah sebagai berikut.
- Noun (kata benda) digunakan untuk kata ganti orang, hewan, atau benda dalam cerita.

- Past tense (kata kerja lampau) dalam narative text menggunakan kata kerja lampau (V2).
Contohnya : was, lived, planned, disappeared, etc.
- Time connective adalah kata penghubung waktu guna mengurutkan kejadian. Contohnya
: since that day, not long after taht, as soon as, etc.
- Action verbs merupakan kata kerja yang menunjukan peristiwa atau kegiatan. Contohnya
: put, took, ate, etc.
- Saying and thinking verb merupakan kata kerja yang menunjukan pelaporan atau ujaran.
Contohnya : said, told, etc.

C. Rangkuman
Pada dasarnya setiap jenis Narrative Text memiliki persamaan. Perbedaan yang muncul hanya
pada:
1. Fairytale : adalah genre dimana cerita yang dibawakan adalah fantasi atau tidak nyata,
karakter dalam cerita tersebut hanya karangan dan biasanya lokasi cerita tersebut berada
di dunia lain atau area yang tidak nyata. Contoh fairytale adalah Harry Potter, Angling
Dharma dan Cincerella
2. Folktale : adalah cerita berdasarkan cerita cerita masa lalu orang jaman dahulu. keaslian
cerita ini sangat diragukan karena folktale diceritakan mulut kemulut tanpa adanya
transkrip atau tulisan tertulis. Contoh Folktale Malin Kumbang
3. Myth : kurang lebih sama seperti folktale namun cerita dari myth/mitos terkadang dapat
ditemukan di kehidupan moderen. Biasanya mitos menceritakan tentang makhluk
makhluk yang belum diketahui keasliannya. Contoh Myth adalah Bigfoot, Yeti
4. Legend : adalah cerita kombinasi dari folktale dan fairytale, disatu sisi legend adalah
cerita rakyat yang dipadukan dengan elemen fantasi sehingga selain terdengar nyata

namun bisa kita temui peninggalannya. Contoh: legenda viking dari norway beserta
dewa2 mereka, legenda Danau Toba.
5. Fable : adalah cerita fantasi dimana karakternya adalah hewan. Fable utamanya
menceritakan cerita yang ditujukan ke manusia namun melalui karakter binatang yang
dapat berbicara dan menggunakan pergerakan dan watak manusia. Contoh Fable si
Kancil

Unsur kebahasaan yang paling dominan dalam Narrative Text adalah Simple Past Tense.
Tense ini digunakan untuk menunjukkan adanya kejadian yang sudah terjadi sebelumnya atau
peristiwa khayalan.

A long time ago, there lived on the island of Bali a giant-like creature named Kebo Iwo. The
people of Bali used to say that Kebo Iwo was everything, a destroyer as well as a creator. He
was satisfied with the meal, but this meant for the Balinese people enough food for a
thousand men.

Difficulties arose when for the first time the barns were almost empty and the new harvest
was still a long way off. This made Kebo Iwo wild with great anger. In his hunger, he
destroyed all the houses and even all the temples. It made the Balinese turn to rage. So, they
came together to plan steps to oppose this powerful giant by using his stupidity. They asked
Kebo Iwo to build them a very deep well, and rebuild all the houses and temples he had
destroyed. After they fed Kebo Iwo, he began to dig a deep hole.

One day he had eaten too much, he fell asleep in the hole. The oldest man in the village gave
a sign, and the villagers began to throw the limestone they had collected before into the hole.
The limestone made the water inside the hole boiling . Kebo Iwo was buried alive. Then the
water in the well rose higher and higher until at last it overflowed and formed Lake Batur.
The mound of earth dug from the well by Kebo Iwo is known as Mount Batur.

Once upon a time, there was an old woman who lived in a very old hut near a forest with her
only daughter. The daughter’s name is Misna. She is beautiful but she had envious heart.
One day she saw girl of her age passing by her hut. The girl was joining her father hunting.
She dressed in beautiful cloth. His father’s assistants respected her. Misna could not sleep
when she was remembering this. She was very angry with her condition. She hated her
hopeless mother.

In the morning she shouted at her mother. She wanted her mother to buy the most beautiful
gown in the markets for her. Of course her mother could not afford it. Then she cried and

cried. She did not want to eat anything. Her mother was very sad. She decided to sell a
piece of land, the only valuable thing that she had. She bought her beloved daughter a very
beautiful dress.

Misna admired herself. She wanted to show everybody that she was a very beautiful girl.
She asked her mother to bring her to another village. Along the way, she smiled to everyone.
People in the village thought that she was a princess. They gave her a high respect and
invited her to have meal in their house. Misna enjoyed this and told everybody that she was
princess and mother was maid. Her mother was very sad but she kept her felling deep in the
heart.
On the way home Misna met a handsome prince. He was interested in her and wanted to
marry her. Misna told the prince that her mother had died and father went married to another
woman. She was having a long trip with her loyal maid. Listening to this, her mother was
very upset. She cried loudly. Misna was very angry to her and told her to be away from her.

Suddenly there was a heavy rain accompanied with big thunders. Everyone run away to save
themselves. Misna was very afraid. She cried. Her mother wanted to help her but she did
not want to at that time a big thunder hit her to dead.

The Legend of Aji Saka

In the Kingdom of Medang Kamulan, in Java,


came a young man, by the name of Aji Saka to
fight Dewata Cengkar, the cruel King of The
Country who had a habit to eat human flesh of his
own people. Aji Saka himself came from Bumi
Majeti.

One day he told his two servants, named Dara and Sembodo, that he was going to Java. He
told them that while he was away, both of them had to guard his Heirloom or Pusoko. No one
except Aji Saka himself was not a allowed to take the Pusoko. In the big battle, Aji Saka
could successfully push Dewata Cengkar to fall to the South Sea. Dewata Cengkar did not
die, he became a Bajul Putih (White Crocodile). Aji Saka became a ruler of Medang
Kamulan.

Meanwhile a woman of the village of Dadapan, found an egg. She put the egg in her
Lumbung (Rice Barn). After a certain period the egg vanished, instead a snake found in the
rice barn. The villagers would like to kill the snake, but the snake said : “I’m the son of Aji
Saka, bring me to him”.

Aji Saka told the snake, that he would be recognized as his son, if the could kill Bajul Putih in
the South Sea. After a long stormy battle which both sides were demonstrating physical
strength and showing skillfull ability of fighting, the snake could kill Bajul Putih.

As had been promised the snake was recognized as Aji Saka’s son and he was given a name
Jaka Linglung (a stupid boy). In the palace Jaka Linglung greedily ate domestic pets of the
palace. He was punished by the King, expelling him to live in the Jungle of Pesanga. He was
tightly roped until he could not move his head. He was instructed only to eat things which fall
to his mouth.

One day, a group of nine village boys were playing around in that Jungle. Suddenly it was
raining heavily. They had to find a shelter, luckily there was a cave. Only eight boys went
inside the cave, the other one who was suffering from very bad skin disease, sting and dirty,
he had to stay out of the cave. All of a sudden, the cave was falling apart. The eight boys
vanished, only the one who stayed outside was safe. The cave in fact was the mouth of Jaka
Linglung.

Once upon a time, there was a king who ruled in Teberu Lombok, who had a beautiful
daughter called Puteri Mandalika. Because of her beauty, princes and kings from other
kingdom around Teberu wished that she would be their wife. Six of them came to Teberu and
ask for her hand of marriage. They were Prince Bumbang, Prince Aryo Johor, Prince Singa
Trasak, Prince Daria Loka, Prince Gunung Piring and Prince Bungsu. Each prince wanted to
win the hearth of Puteri Mandalika.
Her father, the king of Teberu, was very confused and did not know what to do. If he
chose one prince instead of another then it would create jealousy and there could be war
against his kingdom. All the princes were handsome and powerful and so the king allowed his
daughter to make her own choice. But Puteri Mandalika was confused too and she also knew

the dangerous risk that her kingdom and people would get, if she chose either one of the
princes.
After several days of serious thinking, Puteri Mandalika met her parents and asked her
permission to announce her decision in front of all the princes and the people of Teberu the
next day in the beach. Early next morning, everybody gathered on the beach. There was a
gentle breeze with small waves breaking softly across the shore. Everybody was looking at
Puteri Mandalika, waiting for her announcement.
Meanwhile, the six princes prayed in their heart that he would be the chosen one.
Then in a loud and clear voice, Puteri Mandalika Said, ”Oh my beloved mother and father, all
the princes and especially the people of Teberu Kingdom. Today I would like to announce
that I will not give myself to any one of the princes, but rather to all people of Teberu and my
own kingdom.” Then Puteri Mandalika threw herself into the sea from the top of a hill and
disappeared. Everybody desperately search for her but she could not be found and people
believed she was transformed into flowing sea worms called “nyale”.
