. THE PROFESSIONS are a set of occupations that have

developed a very special set of norms deriving
from their special role in society
( SCHEIN, E.H.)
Pharmacy is the art and science of preparing
and dispensing medication and the provision
of drug and related information to the public

It involves the : - interpretation of prescription

orders ;
- the compounding, labeling and
dispensing of drug and devices ;
- drug product selection and drug
utilization reviews;
- the responsibility for patient monitoring
and intervention and the provision of
cognitive services
The exercise of proper judgment is a key
element in this first group of professional
characteristics.

This group of professional characteristics is

related to ethics in that a major function of
the ethics of the profession is to increase the
social value of the profession by encouraging
the development , acquisition and proper use
of the specialized knowledge of the
profession
The second group of professional
characteristics is the possession , by its
practitioners , of a set of attitudes which
influences their professional behaviors
The basic component of this set of attitude is
altruism , an unselfish concern for the
welfare of others.
The profession man , it has been said , does
not work in order to be paid : he is paid in
order that he may work. Every decision he
makes in the course of his career is based
on his sense of what is right, not on his
estimate of what is profitable
Thus, the pharmacist is not considered a
professional because a good typing skills.
Rather , the relevant professional function
involved in this operation is the pharmacist’s
knowledge about drugs and patients which
permits the pharmacist to advise patients and
prescribers concerning drug therapy, detect
drug interactions, select appropriate drug
product sources and exercise professional
judgment
The professions are more socially useful than
other occupation , however social utility
alone does not make an occupation a
profession.
The social utility of an occupation must be
based on the possession and use of a
specialized body of knowledge.
An applied body of knowledge may be
composed of knowledge of manual skill or
intellectual knowledge.
The intellectual knowledge which is of
primary significance as a criterion for
profession.
The professions have developed around the
provision of services that usually have
three general characteristics:

1. They are central to important human values

and involve significant services
( health, education, religion, welfare)

2. They require knowledge and skills that the

typical user does not have ( ability to
diagnose disease, fly a plane,
defend against a lawsuit)
3. They are personal services that must be
adapted to the needs of individual clients;
they are unstandardized ( surgery, divorce
counseling, tax advice )
The following factors emerge as characteristics
of an occupation considered to be a
profession:

1. Provides socially necessary and important

functions

2. Encompasses a body of specialized

knowledge and skills requiring advanced
theoretical training

3. Renders and individualized , unstandar-

dized service directly to clients
4. Provides autonomy for the definition,
organization, and performance of work

5. Internally controls the behaviorof its

practitioners

6. Has a formal organization, a code of ethics,

and licensure requirements
Pharmacists as health professionals have
three basic obligations:

1. To be competent, since they have professed

to be

2. To use this competence in the best interests

of the patient

3. To ensure that the patient has adequate

information to tell the professional what
those interests are
