E. MATERI PEMBELAJARAN
Degree of Comparison
1. Definition
Degree of comparison is a form of adjective that is used to compare a person, an
animal, or thing possessing the characteristic, size, and shape with another.
2. Social function
It is used to compare two objects in one sentence using an adjective
3. Types of Degree of Comparison
a. Positive Degree
A positive degree is what you use when you’re describing an equal state between
two objects. The positive degree of comparison is basically the original form of the
adjective. This degree does not allow you to make any comparison. You can use
the phrase ‘as … as’ in a sentence to signify a positive degree. The rule is :
(Subject 1 + to be + as + Adjective + as + Subject 2)
Example :
1. Mike looks as handsome as tommy
2. You should practice football as often as you can
3. Lisa is happy
4. The sun is bright
b. Comparative Degree
The comparative degree of comparison is used to compare between two things that
have the particular quality of a noun.
Rules:
(Subject + to be + Adjective – er + than + Subject 2)
(Subject + to be + more + Adjective + than + Subject 2)
We add “-er” or “more” based on the syllables.
If one syllable we add “-er” (hot-hotter)
Two syllables of the adjectives we put “more” (handsome- more handsome)
except the adjectives end in “y” (happy- happier), “-er”, “-le”, “-ow”
(clever- cleverer, simple- simpler, shallow- shallower).
Three syllables or more, it is always added “more” (important- more
important).
Example:
1. Tina looks sadder than Katie
2. This bed is more comfortable than the other bed.
3. The sun is brighter than yesterday.
4. The road is more slippery than you think.
c. Superlative Degree
This degree is the highest degree of comparison. It is used to compare the similar
qualities shared by more than two nouns. It shows which of these nouns being
compared has the greatest or least degree of the mentioned quality or qualities. We
put “-est/-iest” or “most” or ‘least’ on the adjectives.
Rules :
(Subject + to be + Adjective – est + Object)
(Subject + to be + most + Adjective + Object)
Example :
1. Novita is the cleverest girl in this class
2. Beni is the most handsome man
