IATA singkatan dari International Air Transport Association (Asosiasi Transportasi Udara
Internasional). IATA adalah organisasi perdagangan global yang mewakili lebih dari 290
maskapai penerbangan dari seluruh dunia, yang mencakup sekitar 82% dari total lalu lintas udara
di dunia.
IATA bermarkas di Montreal, Canada didirikan pada April 1945 di Havana, Kuba, IATA
adalah penerus Asosiasi Lalu Lintas Udara Internasional (International Air Traffic Association)
yang didirikan di Den Haag pada tahun 1919, tahun saat penerbangan berjadwal internasional
yang pertama di dunia dilaksanakan.
Tujuan utama IATA adalah untuk mewakili, menyatukan, dan melayani kepentingan
maskapai penerbangan. Anggota maskapai penerbangan diberikan kelonggaran khusus untuk
dapat mengkonsultasikan harga antara sesama anggota melalui organisasi IATA, dan IATA juga
bertugas menjalankan peraturan dalam pengiriman barang-barang berbahaya dan menerbitkan
panduan Peraturan Barang-barang Berbahaya IATA (IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations).
Selain mewakili maskapai penerbangan, IATA juga berinteraksi dengan berbagai pihak dalam
industri penerbangan, termasuk bandara, penyedia layanan darat, agen perjalanan, dan pihak
terkait lainnya, untuk memfasilitasi kerjasama dan perkembangan industri secara keseluruhan .
Organisasi IATA memiliki berbagai fungsi dan peran yang penting dalam industri
penerbangan, antara lain:
1. IATA bertindak sebagai organisasi yang mewakili maskapai penerbangan dan juru bicara
bagi maskapai penerbangan di tingkat internasional, melalui advokasi dan perundingan
dengan berbagai pihak, IATA berusaha untuk memperjuangkan kepentingan maskapai,
baik dalam hal regulasi, kebijakan, atau isu-isu lain yang mempengaruhi industri
penerbangan.

Freedom of Air diartikan sebagai kebebasan udara adalah seperangkat hak penerbangan
komersial yang diberikan oleh suatu negara termasuk hak untuk masuk di wilayah udara negara
lain. Freedom of air ini dirumuskan dalam konvensi Chicago pada tahun 1944 untuk
penerbangan international komersil di dunia. Penggunaan Freedom of Air memberi hak untuk
mengoperasikan layanan penerbangan internasional hanya dalam lingkup perjanjian multilateral
dan bilateral (perjanjian layanan udara) yang memungkinkan mereka untuk melintas atau
beroperasi.
Freedoms of the Air
First Freedom of the Air or a First Freedom Right - the right or privilege, in respect of
scheduled international air services, granted by one State to another State or States to fly across
its territory without landing.
Second Freedom of the Air or a Second Freedom Right - the right or privilege, in respect of
scheduled international air services, granted by one State to another State or States to land in its
territory for non-traffic purposes.
Third Freedom of The Air or a Third Freedom Right - the right or privilege, in respect of
scheduled international air services, granted by one State to another State to put down, in the
territory of the first State, traffic coming from the home State of the carrier (also known as
a Third Freedom Right).
Fourth Freedom of The Air or a Fourth Freedom Right - the right or privilege, in respect
of scheduled international air services, granted by one State to another State to take on, in the
territory of the first State, traffic destined for the home State of the carrier.
Fifth Freedom of The Air or a Fifth Freedom Right - the right or privilege, in respect of
scheduled international air services, granted by one State to another State to put down and to take
on, in the territory of the first State, traffic coming from or destined to a third State.
ICAO characterizes all "freedoms" beyond the Fifth as "so-called" because only the first five
"freedoms" have been officially recognized as such by international treaty.
Eighth Freedom of The Air or a Eighth Freedom Right - the right or privilege, in respect of
scheduled international air services, of transporting cabotage traffic between two points in the
territory of the granting State on a service which originates or terminates in the home country of
the foreign carrier or (in connection with the so-called Seventh Freedom of the Air) outside the
territory of the granting State. ("consecutive cabotage").
Ninth Freedom of The Air or a Ninth Freedom Right - the right or privilege of
transporting cabotage traffic of the granting State on a service performed entirely within the
territory of the granting State. ("stand alone" cabotage).
