 1. Pengertian Budaya & Kebudayaan
BUDAYA
Budaya merupakan suatu cara hidup yang
terbentuk dari banyak unsur yang rumit
dan berkembang pada sebuah kelompok
orang atau masyarakat. Istilah budaya
berasal dari bahasa Sansekerta
buddhayah, yang merupakan bentuk jamak
dari buddhi berarti «budi» atau «akal».
KEBUDAYAAN
Kebudayaan merupakan hasil dari budaya yaitu
hasil kegiatan dan penciptaan batin manusia
seperti kepercayaan, kesenian, dan adat
istiadat. Kebudayaan menunjuk kepada berbagai
aspek kehidupan meliputi cara-cara
berlaku, kepercayaan-kepercayaan dan sikap-
sikap, dan juga hasil dari kegiatan manusia khas
untuk suatu masyarakat atau kelompok penduduk
tertentu.

 Asal usul budaya

Sejarah Suku Karo Menurut Kol. (Purn) Sempa Sitepu dalam buku
"Sejarah Pijer Podi, Adat Nggeluh Suku Karo Indonesia"
menuliskan secara tegas etnis Karo bukan berasal dari si Raja
Batak. Ia mengemukakan silsilah etnis Karo yang diperoleh dari
cerita lisan secara turun temurun dan sampai kepada beliau yang
didengar sendiri dari kakeknya yang lahir sekitar tahun
1838.Menurutnya, leluhur etnis Karo berasal dari India Selatan
berbatasan dengan Mianmar.Menurut cerita yang disarikan oleh
Sempa Sitepu, bahwa pada awalnya seorang maharaja yang sangat
kaya, sakti dan berwibawa yang tinggal di sebuah negeri bersama
permaisuri dan putra-putrinya, yang terletak sangat jauh di
seberang lautan.

Karo
Karo adalah salah satu kabupaten yang berada
di Provinsi Sumatra Utara, Indonesia. Ibu kota
kabupaten ini terletak di kecamatan Kabanjahe.
Kabupaten Karo berlokasi di dataran tinggi
Karo, Bukit Barisan Sumatra Utara. Terletak
sejauh 77 km dari kota Medan, ibu kota
Provinsi Sumatra Utara. Kabupaten Karo
memiliki luas wilayah 2.127,25 km² dan jumlah
penduduk pada tahun 2020 sebanyak 404.998
jiwa, dengan kepadatan 190 jiwa/km²
 Bahasa
Suku karo memiliki bahasa yang disebut Bahasa Karo atau Cakap
Karo. Bahasa Karo adalah sebuah bahasa Austronesia dalam
rumpun bahasa Batak yang digunakan oleh suku Karo yang
mendiami Dataran Tinggi Karo (Kabupaten Karo), Langkat, Deli
Serdang, Dairi, Medan, hingga ke Aceh Tenggara di Indonesia.
 Baju Adat Suku Karo
Di daerah Karo, pakaian adat yang dipakai oleh kaum
pria dan wanita sejatinya disebut dengan istilah uis
gara, dan terkadang disebut juga dengan nama yang
lebih spesifik seperti uis nipes atau beka buluh, dan
lain sebagainya.

Uis gara didominasi dengan warna merah, atau

kadang dipadukan dengan warna lain seperti hitam
dan putih, kemudian dihiasi dengan tenunan benang
berwarna emas dan perak yang membuatnya terlihat
mahal dan elegan.
Rumah Adat
Siwaluh Jabu adalah rumah adat suku Karo.
Siwaluh jabu adalah rumah tinggal orang-
orang Karo pada zaman dahulu. Siwaluh
jabu menjadi bagian dari kehidupan orang
Karo. Adapun jenis siwaluh jabu menurut
atapnya yaitu rumah sianjung anjung dan
rumah mecu dan ada juga siwaluh jabu
menurut dindingnya yaitu rumah sangka
manuk dan rumah sendi.
 Tarian Daerah Suku Karo
● TARI NDURUNG
Tarian ini menggambarkan bagaimana masyarakat Karo melakukan kegiatan mereka sehari-hari seperti bekerja di perkebunan padi, di
lapangan dan mengambil buah palma dari hutan.
● TARI NDIKKAR
Ndikkar merupakan bentuk pertahanan diri tradisional dari daerah Karo. Dikenal sebagai seni Pencak Silat yang tumbuh serta
berkembang dengan kebudayaan di masyarakat Karo. Ndikkar mempunyai ciri-ciri yakni gerakan yang amat lambat serta lembut.
Namun, di waktu-waktu tertentu gerakan tarian tersebut akan tampak keras sekali cepat.
● TARI BAKA
Tarian ini menggambarkan seseorang paranormal atau yang sering disebut sebagai orang pintar yang sedang menyembuhkan orang sakit.
● TARI PISO SURIT
Tarian ini digunakan untuk menyambut para tamu kehormatan. Arti Piso Surit adalah burung yang bernyanyi. Tarian ini menggambarkan
seorang gadis yang sedang menantikan kedatangan sang kekasih. hal ini digambarkan menyedihkan serta digambarkan sebagai seekor
burung yang suka bernyanyi.
● TARI TONGKAT
Tari Tongkat ini menggambarkan bagaimana manusia yang memiliki ilmu gaib ini mengusir roh-roh jahat yang masuk ke suatu tempat di
pedesaan. Manusia tersebut menggunakan sebuah tongkat khusus yang disebut tongkat malaikat dan tongkat panaluan.
 Makanan Daerah Suku Karo
1. Arsik Nurung Mas-Ikan mas arsik nurung adalah salah satu masakan khas batak Karo yang sangat populer Pembuatannye bisa
memakan waktu berjam-jam sehingga bumbu bumbunya meresap sempurna. Yang menjadi patokan pembuatannya adalah rasa yang
kuat, asin, asam dan pedas (pokoknya bolos bumbu) Ditembeli aroma sereh dan cakala yang khas, membuatnya menjadi masakan yang
tidak terlupakan
2. Babi Panggang Karo-Babi Panggang Karo (atau yang lebih populer dikenal dengan istilah BPK) adalah masakan yang terbuat dari
daging babi yang dipanggang atau dibakar.
3. Terites-Trites adalah makanan khas Karo yang terbuat dari bahan pokok utama makanan lembu/kerbau yang masih ada di lambung
(usus besar) yang sudah dihaluskan kembali oleh kerbau/lembu tetapi belum dihisap sarinya
4. Gule Kuta-Kuta-Gulai Ayam Kampung merupakan masakan tradisional Karo salah satu etnis di Sumatera Utara. Yang menjadi ciri khas
dari gulai ini adalah bumbu yang digunakan salah satunya adalah asam cekala/patikala dan juga kincong atau kecombrang atau juga
honje.
5. Manuk Getah-Merupakan makanan khas Suku Karo dengan berbagai bahan dan bumbu Tanah Karo Simalem. Makanan berkuah ini
dibuat dengan bahan utama dari daging ayam dengan kuah yang kebanyakan dibuat dari darah ayam juga.
● Erpangir Kulau
Tradisi Daerah Suku Karo
Erpangir kulau adalah upacara mandi untuk mengusir roh jahat atau menyucikan diri dari pengaruh roh jahat, memberi sesajian
kepada yang kuasa supaya diberikan rejeki.
● Upacara Perumah Begu
Upacara perumah begu masih tetap ada diantara penganut animisme. Dalam upacara perumah begu ini seorang dukun dapat
berkomunikasi dengan roh-roh para leluhur dengan mengijinkan roh-roh itu masuk ke dalam tubuhnya. Dengan cara ini kita dapat
mengetahui tentang hal-hal yang akan datang dan masa lalu para leluhur dapat disingkap.
● Mengket Rumah dan Cawir Metua
Mengket rumah adalah upacara memasuki rumah baru dan cawir metua adalah upacara untuk orang yang meninggal pada usia tua
(seluruh anak sudah menikah)
● Erdemu Bayu
Upacara lain yang dapat dilihat di Karo adalah erdemu bayu yaitu pesta perkawinan, suatu pesta upacara yang melibatkan banyak
orang, baik dari pihak pengantin pria, pihak pengantin wanita, kalimbubu, anak beru dan sembuyak. Di dalam perkawinan karo
pihak wanita masuk ke dalam pihak pria dan pihak pria harus membayar tukur (mas kawin) kepada kalimbubu.
