INTRODUCTION
Among all the genres short stories such as fantasy, legend and modern fantasy, I had made Realistic Fiction my choice to do my research on. The reason why I had chosen Realistic Fiction is because of the impressive characteristics it has which it resembles the real life situation we might be facing in reality. Reading this kind of story may help to improve and enhance one’s problem solving skill. This is a very important element and skill to be mastered by everyone especially me, as a future teacher.
DEFINITION
There are plenty of definition found that are related to Realistic Fiction. According to Oxford Dictionary, the word “realistic” is defined as “resembling or simulating real life”. As for me, Realistic Fiction is one of the genres in short stories that could have actually happened to people in real life which has believable and reliable setting. These stories resemble real life, and the characters in the stories react similarly to people in real life. As a fiction, it might not be a true story, but it could happen in real life to a real person.
The famous Realistic Fiction stories are Sherlock Holmes which is written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, The mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie and the one which is loved by youngsters recently, The Fault in Our Stars written by John Green.
TYPES OF REALISTIC FICTION
Being categorized under Fiction, there are several sub-genres that can be found under Realistic Fiction. They include adventure and survival, mystery and detective, sports, and family story. These types of stories fit the very characteristic of Realistic Fiction – it resembles real life. The story which I had chosen for this task entitled “Sherlock Holmes” falls under the genre of mystery and detective. This story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is about a famous detective named Sherlock Holmes using his superior reasoning skills in solving hardcore cases and mysteries.
CHARACTERISTICS
Every genre has its own unique characteristics and so do Realistic Fiction. Unlike Historical Fiction, although these two genres share some of the characteristic such as they have to be realistic, but they differ in terms of the degree of reality they represent. For instance, Historical Fiction can have imaginary characters, but the events they narrate must be historically accurate and real. On the other hand. Realistic Fiction can tell the story of any characters in any events that could happen in real life to real people but not necessarily be true.
However, there are further characteristics of Realistic Fiction which proves that it differs from other types of genres. First and foremost, realistic fiction stories can either take place in the present time or even past time. This is different from Historical Fiction that only tells stories from the past. As an example from the story I had chosen, the mysterious story about Sherlock Holmes takes place during the nineteenth century at the Baker Street of London. Other examples of stories happening in recent time are The Fault in Our Stars.
The elements of characters of Realistic Fiction too differs from Historical Fictions’, where they are involved in events that could occur in the real life situation which the events in Historical Fiction are required to be historically accurate. As we can see, cases that happen in Sherlock Holmes’ short stories such as murdering cases too occur in our real life. Other than that, characters in Realistic Fiction live in places that could be or are real though the narrated story might not be true. As example, Baker Street is place
