1. MATERI PEMBELAJARAN
Descriptive Text
a. Definition
According to Alawi (2001: 1) has similar opinion about descriptive text. He adds that
“descriptive is the text picturing the person, place and thing with clear detail to help the
readers look an object which is described”.
Descriptive text is a text that gives information about particular person, place, or thing.
Gerot et al in Mursyid states that descriptive text is a kind of text with a purpose to give
information. The context of this kind of text is the description of particular thing, animal,
person, or others.”
b. Social Function
To give information about a particular entity by describing its
features, history, and special characteristics.
To give information about things by describing physical attributes,
behaviors, uses,etc.
c. Generic structure
According to Gerot and Wignell (1994: 208) add that there are two generic
structures of descriptive text; namely, identification and description. In identification,
the learners will identify phenomenon or subject that is going to be described. While,
description, the learners will describe specifically parts, qualities, and characteristics of
an object that is being described.
The generic structure of descriptive text consists of identification and
description.
a). Identification is about introducing subject or thing that will be described,
whereas,
b). description is brief details about who, or what of the subject.
d. Language Features
Related to its linguistic features, Gerot and Wignell (1994), Emilia and Christie
(2013), Knapp and Watkins (2005), Derewianka (1990) and Nafisah and Kurniawan
(2007), state that a descriptive text employs the following linguistic features:
a. Focus on specific participants as the main character;
b. Use present tense as dominant tenses;
c. Use linking verbs or relational process frequently (is, are, has, have, belongs to) in
order to classify and describe appearance or qualities and parts or functions of
phenomena);
d. Use action verbs or material process and behavioural process in giving additional
description regarding action and behaviour done by the participants in text;
e. Use mental verb or mental process when describing feelings;
f. Use nominal group frequently to describe;
g. Use adjective and adverbs to add information to nouns and add information to verbs
to provide more detailed description about the topic;
h. Use adverbial phrases to add more information about manner, place, or time and
sometimes realized in embedded clause which functions as circumstances. There
are some language features in descriptive text. They are:
Using adjective. For example: big, dark brown,happy.
Using simple present tense. For example: I love my cat.
Using action verb. For example: put, think,made.
Using noun phrase. For example : favorite doll, mybed.
Using general. For example : the vegetables, the animals.

2. Descriptive words & phrases
Descriptive words atau kata deskriptif untuk menjelaskan tentang seseorang. Descriptive
words juga bisa berupa adjective atau kata sifat. Berikut ini adalah beberapa contoh
descriptive words/phrases yang berhubungan tentang ciri fisik seseorang.
3. Personality/characteristics
Di bawah ini adalah beberapa contoh kepribadian/karakteristik seseorang dari yang baik
serta yang buruk.
adalah bentuk keterangan waktu yang menyatakan suatu kejadian yang berlangsung di masa
sekarang.
Kalimat simple present tense terdiri dari dua jenis yaitu nominal sentence dan verbal sentence.
Nominal sentence menggunakan ‘to be’ atau ‘be’.

My favorite teacher
I have a great English teacher. Her name is Mrs. Shinta. She is 28 years
old this year. She teaches in a our school, high school in Jakarta. Her height is 168
cm and she weighs about 60 kg. She is my favorite teacher. Mrs. Shinta studied in
America and returned to Indonesia to be an English teacher.
She has sparkle eyes and blonde hair. She is just a bit taller than I am. She
always smiles to us as we bump into each other in the hallway at school. She seemed
very strict the first time I met her. However, we always have a lot of fun during her
classes with her English jokes. She is skillful at teaching, friendly, patient, easygoing
and has great sense of humor. During my study, Mrs. Shinta always inspires her
students. Whenever we are bored by the lesson, she sometimes tells jokes that makes
all of the students laugh. Her jokes always excite us. I hope that she will continue
teaching us until graduation.

previous meeting. And then he starts teaching. I was really amazed by his habit.
