A. Defintion of Lingustics
b. Phonology, study of the sound patterns that occur within languages with
the way sounds are used in individual languages. Phonology makes use
of the phonetic in order to see how sounds or sign are arranged in a system
for each language. In phonology, it matters whether sounds are
constructive or not, that is whether subsituting one sound for another give
a different, or “constractive” meaning. For example in English [r] and [l]
are two different sounds and the word “road” and “load” also different.
According to which of these sounds is used. Phonologists describe the
constractive consonants and vowels in a language and how
pronounciation is affected by the posinon of the sound in the word and
the sounds that are nearby. There are also interested in syllables, phrases,
rythm, tone, and intonation.
d. Syntax, concerns with the structure of phrases and sentences. Is the study
of how phrases, clauses, and sentence are constructed and combine in
particular language. Writing a grammar requires defining the rules that
govern the structure of the sentences of the language. Such rules involve
both the order of words, and the forms of words in their various possible
position.
Merupakan studi tentang bagaimana frase, klausa dan kalimat dikonstruksi dan digabungkan dalam bahasa tertentu. Menulis tata bahasa
membutuhkan pendefinisian aturan yang mengatur struktur kalimat bahasa. Aturan semacam itu melibatkan urutan kata-kata, dan bentuk-bentuk
kata dalam berbagai kemungkinan posisi mereka.
Syntax is the level at which we study how words combine to form phrases,
phrases combine to form clauses and clauses join to make sentences. The
study of syntax also involves the description of the rules of positioning of
elements in the sentence such as the nouns/noun syntax phrases,
verbs/verb phrases, adverbial phrases, etc. A sentence must be composed
of these elements arranged in a particular order. Syntax also attempts to
describe how these elements function in the sentence, i.e. what is their
role in the sentence. For example, the word ‘boy’ is a noun. However, in
each of the following sentences, it functions in different roles:
(a) The boy likes cricket
(b) The old man loved the boy.
In sentence (a), it functions as the subject of the sentence
In sentence (b), it functions as the object.
A sentence should be both grammatical and meaningful. For example, a
sentence like ‘Colourless green ideas sleep furiously’ is grammatically
correct but it is not meaningful. Thus, rules of syntax should be
comprehensive enough to explain how sentences are constructed which
are both grammatical and meaningful.
Sintaks adalah level di mana kita mempelajari bagaimana kata-kata digabungkan untuk membentuk frasa, frasa bergabung menjadi klausa dan
klausa bergabung untuk membuat kalimat. Studi tentang sintaksis juga melibatkan deskripsi aturan penentuan posisi elemen-elemen dalam kalimat
seperti frase sintaksis nomina / nomina, frase verba / kata kerja, frasa adverbia, dll. Sebuah kalimat harus terdiri dari elemen-elemen ini yang
disusun dalam urutan tertentu. . Sintaks juga mencoba menggambarkan bagaimana elemen-elemen ini berfungsi dalam kalimat, yaitu apa peran
mereka dalam kalimat. Misalnya, kata 'boy' adalah kata benda. Namun, dalam masing-masing kalimat berikut, ini berfungsi dalam peran yang
berbeda:
(a) Bocah itu suka kriket
B. SUBFIELDS OF LINGUISTICS
d. Applied Linguistics
In principle, applied linguistics is any application of linguistic methods or
results to solve problems related to language, but in practice it tends to be
restricted to second-language instruction. Linguistics and Applied
Linguistics is a multi-disciplinary study of language in all its aspects
including its structure, its diversity, how it changes and evolves, how
people learn and make use of it to communicate, and how it is implicated
in relations of power. Applied linguistics is a field of study that looks at
how linguistics can help understand real-life problems in areas such
as psychology, sociology and education. It can be compared with
theoretical linguistics, which looks at areas such as morphology,
phonology and lexis. Areas of applied linguistics of interest to teachers of
languages include language acquisition, corpus studies and
sociolinguistics. Ex: Linguistic anthropology is a field of applied
linguistics that links analysis of linguistics and socio-cultural issues.
In the classroom studies in applied linguistics which inform the ELT
classroom include bilingualism, conversation and discourse analysis,
sociolinguistics, language assessment and language teaching itself.
‘applied linguistics’ covers many of the branches of linguistics that
explore the practical application of the theories, concepts and analyses
provided by linguists. All the applications are first and foremost based on
a thorough description of languages.
f. Philosophical Linguistics
Approach to philosophy common in the mid 20th century that tends to see
philosophical problems as arising from inappropriate theoretical use of
language and therefore as being resolved by detailed attention to the
common use of expressions. Philosophy of linguistics Linguists and
philosophers analyzes 3 main linguistic areas: Syntax Semantics
Pragmatics. Philosophy of language Philosophy of language is concerned
with 4 central problems: The nature of meaning, Language use, Language
cognition, Relationship between language and reality. Meaning:
language, mind and world.
Linguistic philosophy Apart from language’s interest as a target of
science and its centrality to our self-conception as describers of reality,
language plays a key role in philosophy. Philosophical interest in
language is maintained by foundational and conceptual questions in
linguistics, quintessentially philosophical problems about the connections
between mind, language and the world, and issues about philosophical
methodology.
g. Neurolinguistics
It is one of the special fields in psychology that addresses physiological
issues such as aphasia, memory loss, etc.
Merupakan salah satu bidang khusus yang ada dalam psiolonguistik yang mempelajari dasar fisiologis gangguan bahasa dan bahasa seperti afasia,
kehilangan ingatan, dll.
C. Scope of Linguistics
Linguistics today is a subject of study, independent of other disciplines.
Before the twentieth century, the study of language was not regarded as a
separate area of study in its own right. It was considered to he a part of
studying the history of language or the philosophy of language, and this
was known not as linguistics but as philosophy. So ‘Linguistics’ is a
modern name which defines a specific discipline, in which we study
language not in relation to some other area such as history or philosophy,
but language as itself, as a self enclosed and autonomous system, worthy
of study in its own right. It was necessary at the beginning of the growth
of modern linguistics to define this autonomy of the subject, otherwise it
would not have been possible to study the language system with the depth
and exhaustiveness which it requires. However, now we acknowledge that
while linguistics is a distinct area of study, it is also linked to other
disciplines and there are overlapping areas of concern.
The main concern of modern linguistics is to describe language, to study
its nature and to establish a theory of language. That is, it aims at studying
the components of the language system and to ultimately arrive at an
explanatory statement on how the system works. In modern linguistics,
the activity of describing the language system is the most important and
so modern linguistics is generally known as descriptive. But linguistics
has other concerns as well, which fall within its scope and these include
historical and comparative study of language. These differ from the
descriptive approach in their emphasis; otherwise, these approaches also
involve description of language.
a single distinguishable sound, called a phoneme. Or we can put it the
other way round, and say that single sounds or phonemes combine
together to make larger units of sounds, these combine into a larger
meaningful unit called a morpheme; morphemes combine to form larger
units of words, and words combine to form a large unit or sentence and
several sentences combine or interconnect to make a unified piece of
speech or writing, which we call a text or discourse.

bergabung bersama untuk membuat unit suara yang lebih besar, ini bergabung menjadi unit bermakna yang lebih besar yang disebut morfem;
morfem bergabung untuk membentuk unit kata yang lebih besar, dan kata-kata bergabung untuk membentuk unit atau kalimat yang besar dan
beberapa kalimat menggabungkan atau interkoneksi untuk membuat sepotong pidato atau tulisan, yang kita sebut teks atau wacana.
b) Comparative Linguistics
Comparing one language with other cognate languages, and learning
languages from one period to another (comparison of linguistics)
Membandingkan satu bahasa dengan bahasa lain yang serumpun, serta mempelajari bahasa dari satu masa ke masa lain (perbandingan ilmu

remembering them).
Langue
La langue is the whole system of language that precedes and makes speech
possible. A sign is a basic unit of langue. Learning a language, we master
the system of grammar, spelling, syntax and punctuation. These are all
elements of langue. Langue is a system in that it has a large number of
elements whereby meaning is created in the arrangements of its elements
and the consequent relationships between these arranged elements.
Seluruh sistem bahasa yang mendahului dan memungkinkan pembicaraan. Tanda adalah unit dasar bahasa. Belajar bahasa, kami menguasai sistem tata
bahasa, pengejaan, sintaksis dan tanda baca. Ini semua adalah elemen bahasa. Langue adalah suatu sistem di mana ia memiliki sejumlah besar elemen
di mana makna dibuat dalam pengaturan unsur-unsurnya dan hubungan konsekuen antara elemen-elemen yang diatur ini.
Parole
Parole is the concrete use of the language, the actual utterances. It is an
external manifestation of langue. It is the usage of the system, but not the
system.
Pembebasan bersyarat adalah penggunaan bahasa secara konkret, ucapan yang sebenarnya. Ini adalah manifestasi eksternal dari bahasa. Ini adalah
penggunaan sistem, tetapi bukan sistem.
Langage
Langage is a combination of parole and langue (a combination of events with
language or grammar rules, or language structure). According to Saussure, language
does not qualify as a social fact because in language there are individual language
factors that originate from the speaker's personality. Most do not have the principle
of wholeness which allows us to research it scientifically. For example, the word
material. This word is indeed socially widely used as a language which is considered
as a conventional language. In fact, the word "material" is extended standard, not in
accordance with the improved spelling (EYD). Language has an individual aspect
(parole) and a social aspect (language) but we cannot study one without the other.
Thus, languages have multiple forms and heteroclites; and psychic.
konvensional.
Parole
Phonology, study of the sound patterns that occur within languages. Some linguists
include phonetics, the study of the production and description of speech sounds,
within the study of phonology.
Diachronic (historical) phonology examines and constructs theories about
the changes and modifications in speech sounds and sound systems over a period of
time. For example, it is concerned with the process by which the English words “sea”
and “see,” once pronounced with different vowel sounds (as indicated by the spelling),
have come to be pronounced alike today. Synchronic (descriptive) phonology
investigates sounds at a single stage in the development of a language, to discover the
sound patterns that can occur. For example, in English, “nt” and “dm” can appear
within or at the end of words (“rent,” “admit”) but not at the beginning.
Phonetics deals with the production of speech sounds by humans, often without prior
(sebelumnya) knowledge of the language being spoken. Phonology is
about patterns of sounds, especially different patterns of sounds in different
languages, or within each language, different patterns of sounds in different positions
in words etc. (Fonetik berkaitan dengan produksi suara bicara oleh manusia, seringkali
tanpa pengetahuan sebelumnya tentang bahasa yang diucapkan. Fonologi adalah
tentang pola suara, terutama pola suara yang berbeda dalam bahasa yang berbeda, atau
dalam setiap bahasa, pola suara yang berbeda pada posisi berbeda dalam kata-kata
dll.)
For example, the glottal stop [ ] occurs in both English and Arabic BUT ...
In Arabic, / / is a consonant sound like any other (/k/, /t/ or whatever): [ íktib]
"write!", [da íi a] "minute (time)", [ a ] "right".
4. Phonemes and allophones, or sounds and their variants
The vowels in the English words "cool", "whose" and "moon" are all similar but
slightly different. They are three variants or allophones of the /u/ phoneme. The
different variants are dependent on the different contexts in which they occur.
Likewise, the consonant phoneme /k/ has different variant pronunciations in
different contexts. Compare:
These are all examples of variants according to position (contextual variants). There
are also variants between speakers and dialects. For example, "toad" may be
pronounced [tëUd] in high-register RP, [toUd] or [to d] in the North. All of them are
different pronunciations of the same sequence of phonemes. But these differences
can lead to confusion: [toUd] is "toad" in one dialect, but may be "told" in another.
Morphology
Morphemes
Morpheme is a minimal unit of meaning or grammatical fungtion. It is a
minimal unit which indicates the meaning. For example of elements are –s, -er, -ed, -
ing, ect.
e.g : “reopened” consists of three morphemes, re-, open, -ed
re- : again
open : open
-ed : indicating past tense
Free and bound morphemes
There are two types of morphemes, free morphemes and bound morphemes.
a. free morphemes is the morphemes which can stand by them self as single
words. For example : open and tour
b. bound morphemes is the morphemes which can not stand alone and are
typically attached to another forms/ suffix and affix (re-, -ist, -ed, -s, ect.). for example
:
Undressed
un- dress -ed
prefix stem suffix
(bound) (free) (bound)
