Narrative Text
Narrative text adalah jenis teks cerita yang bersifat imajinatif dan juga menggambarkan
rangkaian peristiwa dari waktu ke waktu. Dijabarkan dari awal, tengah, dan akhir. 
Narrative text merupakan teks yang bersifat kronologis, yaitu teks yang menceritakan suatu
kejadian secara runtut.
Narrative text terdiri dari beberapa jenis, yang paling umum dijumpai adalah dongeng (tales),
cerita rakyat (folklore), maupun cerita fiksional lainnya.
Tujuan Narrative Text
Narrative text bertujuan untuk menghibur dan menarik minat pembaca.
Narrative text menyajikan cerita atau peristiwa yang memiliki masalah. Masalah tersebut dapat
menimbulkan konflik dan pada akhir cerita ada resolusinya dan memiliki akhir yang
menyedihkan maupun bahagia.

Struktur Narrative Text


Setiap jenis teks bahasa Inggris (genre) memiliki struktur teksnya sendiri-sendiri. Struktur
narrative text terdiri dari tiga bagian ( generic structure ) yaitu sebagai berikut:

1. Orientation:
Orientation disebut juga sebagai pengenalan. Pada bagian ini berisi tentang pengenalan tokoh
dalam cerita serta waktu dan tempat kejadiannya.

2. Complication:
Complication atau komplikasi merupakan gambaran munculnya krisis atau masalah yang
dialami oleh para tokoh pada cerita. Krisis tersebut harus dipecahkan oleh para tokoh.

3. Resolution:
Resolution atau resolusi merupakan bagian yang berisi bagaimana tokoh dari cerita tersebut
memecahkan masalah. Biasanya terdapat lebih dari satu resolution untuk satu complication.

Ciri Narrative Text


1. Berfokus pada satu tokoh atau pelaku dan biasanya individual sehingga biasanya
menggunakan kata ganti seperti I, we, she, and he.

2. Sering menggunakan past tense baik itu simple past tense, past continuous, maupun bentuk
past tense lainnya.

3. Terkadang menggunakan dialog untuk mengajak pembaca berimajinasi sehingga ceritanya


nampak lebih jelas dan nyata.

4. Menggunakan kata sambung (conjunction) agar cerita terlihat urut.


Contoh Narrative Text I
Roro Jongrang
A long time ago in Prambanan Palace lived a king named Baka with his beautiful
daughter Roro Jongrang. Many rulers wanted to marry Roro Jongrang, so they competed for
her. When Bandung Bondowoso conquered Prambanan, he killed King Baka in a battle.
Bandung Bondowoso let Roro Jongrang live, but she was supposed to marry Bandung.
She refused, it was making Bandung humiliated and offended. Roro Jongrang struggled to
escape, but it was in vain. Finally, Roro agreed to marry Bandung, but on one condition.
Bandung had to present a big wonderful palace with one thousand sculptures in it and he had
to finish it before the sun rose. He agreed.
Bandung immediately called his invisible friends for help. They did what their master
ordered. Knowing it, Roro was worried. It appeared they would finish the work before morning
and would not stop. What can I do? Roro though in a panic. Suddenly she had an idea. She
awoke her maids and nannies, asked them to do their daily routines as if morning had come.
They also made shadow as if there was a sun in the sky.
Bandung was surprised. The sky was red, the roosters crowed, and the people pounded
rice. Meanwhile the job had not been finished. The evil spirits disappeared because they were
scared of light. Bandung was there alone. When he found out that Roro had use tricks, he
cursed her. He turned her into a stone, which completed the temples. Even today, the statue of
Roro Jongrang remains the temple.

Contoh Narrative Text II


The Magic Candle
One day, a young wanderer got lost in a wood. Suddenly he saw a light from an old hut.
He knocked on the door, and an old woman opened it. She was crying. She said that the devil
had stolen her magic candle. The candle could grant anything she asked. The wanderer asked
her where the devil lived. “In a castle not far from here” said the old woman.
The wanderer went to the castle. There she found the devil, but he was old and weak.
Therefore, when the wanderer grabbed the magic candle from the devil’s table and ran away,
he couldn’t chase him.
But the wanderer was not a kind man. He didn’t return the candle to the old woman,
but kept it for himself. He lit the candle and made a wish, “I want to go far away from here”.
Suddenly the genies appeared and took him to a beautiful palace. There was party in the
palace. The wanderer wanted to make some money. So he lit the candle again and wished for
some jewelry. He sold them to the guests and was soon making a lot of money. Then the
Princess came to buy the jewelry, but there was nothing left. The wanderer fell in love with her
and asked her to marry him. The kind princess said yes, and they got married the nest day. In
his happiness, the wanderer told the princess about his adventure and the magic candle.
Hearing that, the princess got very angry. At night she lit the candle and wished that the
wanderer disappear.
In the morning the wanderer awoke and found himself back in his ugly house in the
village.
